Noble Trouble

2725 Words
It was the day of the Entrance Exam. Mindy and I stood before a building that might as well be a mansion, a mansion that was the Flammel Royal Academy. Aside from the large, fancy white building, there was a large fountain by the entrance, and a pair of flower fields by either sides of the walkway. Adding in the many teenagers- that is, young adults- walking into the building, most in noble clothing of any kind, it was clear that this school was made for nobles, despite how it gave equal chance to commoners. "For some reason, I'm feeling really nervous in being here..." Mindy said to me, sticking as close to me as possible, while distancing herself from all the nobles. "It's probably because you're the only purebred here. Don't let the pressure get to you. We have been working hard for this day," I told her in a reassuring tone. Mindy felt at ease with my words and took in some calming breaths. "Yeah... Yeah, you're right, milady. Apologies for... such a display," she said. From her tone and speech, however, I could tell she was far from relaxed, and patted her head in comfort. "It's fine. Besides, if anything, I should be the one getting nervous and sticking out like a sore thumb. I am the only here with a cloak covering her face." That made Mindy feel a little bit better, as she held back a giggle. "Yeah, that's true." I smiled upon seeing my harpy companion finally loosening up, and removed my hand from her head. "In any case, we should go in and get registered. We can't take the exam otherwise." As I said that, though, we both heard stifle laugh behind us. The two of us glanced and saw a pair of nobles holding back laughs, but looking at us with amused expressions. "A crossbreed and a shy commoner think they can get into this school?" the female brunette of the pair questioned. "Well, even if they do get in, they will never be able to graduate," the male ravenette stated. Mindy quickly grew upset at their words and was about to walk up to them, when I held her by the wing. "Ignore them, Mindy. I told you we might be getting this sort of treatment. Just ignore and endure," I whispered. "Yes, milady..." she reluctantly whispered back. Before the day of the exam, I had warned my harpy friend of the possibility that we would be subjugated to bullying, due to our class as commoners. I was not exactly sure how nobles in this world would act, but considering how lowly my family thought water affinity to be, as well as my knowledge in my previous world about how arrogant nobles act in anime and manga, it did not slip my mind that there may be some of those nobles here in this world. Adding to the suspicious fact that no commoner, although had made it in to the Flammel Royal Academy, had ever graduated from here... That suspicion only grew. And now to have two of the many nobles speak bad about us behind our backs? All it did was confirm the suspicions. "Filthy commoner! Who do you think you are?!" came a different arrogant voice nearby. Mindy and I turned to the source and saw, to my disgust, a trio of nobles standing over a girl with light green hair, lying on the ground. Going by how she was dressed, the girl was a commoner. "What was that for?! You don't need to be rude!" the commoner exclaimed. "All I did was ask a simple question!" "You dare speak back to the great Lord Zaldon!? Know your place, you piece of trash!" one of the nobles scolded. "What he said! A commoner like you has no place to even take this exam!" another one of the nobles exclaimed. "But last I checked, this academy accepts people of all race, gender, and class. I am allowed to be here for the entrance exam!" Before either of the two nobles said anything, the third noble behind them with blonde hair, no doubt someone of higher power than the other two, stepped up. "Indeed, it was said that this academy allows even filthy commoners to try their luck in attending. However, commoner... If you have a brain in that measly little head of yours, take a moment to consider it. The Flammel Royal Academy is the prestigious academy in the whole world. Any who graduates from this school is guaranteed a successful life as a knight of the royal army, a mage of the magical research team, even become head and owner of any plot of land as they see fit, or instantly become a high-class adventurer, if they so please. So do pray tell, dear commoner... amongst what I have listed, has there ever been a trash such as yourself who had achieved in doing such a thing in this academy? Of the many students who graduated from here, they are all nobles, people of high magic capacity and better magic affinity, especially high-ranking nobles such as I. And yet, you dare even think a disgusting piece of trash such as yourself, who has such low magic capacity and affinity not suited for any combat, has a sliver of a chance to be accepted here? What mere foolishness." The moment he said that, any nobles watching the scene all voiced out agreements to his claim. "Yeah, he's right." "No commoners should even be taking step in this sacred land." "I bet that commoner is braindead. Hurry up and leave already, roach!" "You don't belong here!" "Go back to the dirt where you belong!" The commoner looked around, baffled by the sudden treatment she was getting from the people around her, people who were supposed to be her peers. I had seen and read this scene play out in anime and books in my previous life, but to actually see it happen right in front of me was even more disgusting. And from how her ears are twitching, with a dark look in her eyes, Mindy was feeling the same. "... As much as I want to see his face all bloodied up, do not attack," I simply told her. "Yes, milady," she replied, giving her wing a little wave. The higher noble put on a glove and approached the commoner girl. "If you understand that, trash, then-" Before he could even touch her, he was suddenly blown away by a powerful force, and fell on his butt. "Ouch!" "Lord Zaldon!" his two henchmen cried out, rushing to his aid. While everyone else was shellshocked with what occurred, Mindy and I calmly approached our fellow commoner. "Hey. You alright there?" I asked her, snapping her out of the shock of seeing the noble boy getting sent flying, and turning her attention to me. "Huh? O-Oh yes! I'm okay," she assured. "That's good to know." "Hey, you damn commoner! What did you do?!" the downed boy, Zaldon, I believe the henchmen called him, questioned. The girl was about to answer him, but I gestured her to ignore the boy, as I helped her up and dusted her. "Hey! I am talking to you!" "You damn commoner! Listen to Lord Zaldon when he is speaking! Don't just walk away!" one of the henchmen called out. "In case if you blatant fools have yet to realize it, some of us has yet to register for the entrance exam," I spoke, not even bothering to face the trio. "Now I don't know about you, but my friend and I much rather not dawdle here any longer. And considering how you are out here and not inside, I believe it safe to say that the same should go to all of you. I don't remember a free pass being given out to anyone pompous enough to think the academy will ignore its own rule for them." "What was that?!" Zaldon questioned. "Lord Zaldon! That girl next to her..." a henchman called, apparently taking note of Mindy. "That's a monster! Without a slave collar!" That caused a huge commotion amongst the other nobles around us, as did the girl as she stared at Mindy, though not in fear. "And if I am?" my harpy friend questioned. "A monster like you, stepping foot on our sacred ground?! Humiliating enough a commoner dare speak back to me, but to have to take an exam with a monster?!" Zaldon questioned. Just as he said those words, though, a look of what seemed to be realization appeared on his face. "No wait... Ah, I see now. This is the part of the exam." At his claim, everyone looked at him in confusion. "Think about it, people. That thing standing before us is a monster, not some crossbreed! As soon-to-be students enrolling in this academy, it is a given there will be some classes on monsters and how to kill them! For there to be one before us, this is part of the entrance exam! We take it out, we're all as good as secured for our future already!" Many people were disgustingly convinced with such claim, all having quite the smirks on their faces as they stared at Mindy. "May I, milady?" the harpy asked. "You know you can't," I told her. "However, at the very least, get them to leave us be. Like I said before, we don't have the time to waste here." "As you wish." "You're not getting away, monster!" Zaldon shouted, summoning a magic circle on his hand. "Thunderbolt!" A bolt of lightning shot out of it and made its way towards us, when a wind barrier appeared and blocked the bolt, much to his surprise. "What?!" "Would this barrier do, milady?" Mindy asked me. "Yes, this will do fine," I confirmed, keeping my hood down. To the commoner girl, I then said, "You should stay in this barrier, too. If these people are as stupid as I think they are, they won't care if they accidentally hit you, as well." "R-Right!" she replied. Zaldon let out a chuckle at the sight of the barrier. "Really? You think a weak wind barrier is enough to stop magic from a high-class noble?" "It stopped that Thunderbolt spell of yours, didn't it? Or did using that magic fry some memory cells from your brain? If so, you should really be careful of using an affinity you're not used to," I bluntly pointed out. "Oh wait... It's not possible for one to use magic outside of the affinity they were born with, so as such, Lightning Affinity has to be your main. For it to affect you so poorly... Are you really a high-ranking noble or is that nothing but you boasting over nothing but an imagination? If it's the latter, well, I can only imagine how insulting that really is towards all high nobles, especially the dukes." At my insult, Zaldon, his minions, and even several people around us were enraged, especially as they came from a commoner. "What was that, you nasty filth?!" the high nobleman questioned. "That is enough!" came a voice, bringing everyone's attention to the source. Standing there in red clothes was a girl with red hair and hazel eyes. Her hair was long and silky, tied in a braid over her left shoulder. One look at her, and I could tell she was someone reasonable, not like the i***t noble trying to attack us. All the nobles around us flinched, especially signifying she was also of a high-class family. "What is going on here?" she questioned. "Dear Leia... I'm afraid you are too late. I have already called dibs on exterminating this monster for the entrance exam," Zaldon said. "I believe I asked what is going on here, Zaldon. And I am not your 'dear' anything." "How about we start with those idiots picking on this girl for being a commoner?" I answered then. "Then after he somehow got blown away like a leaf in the wind, as my friend and I tried to help her up, that guy made baseless accusations about my friend and suddenly attacked us. Oh, and he's getting the others worked up for it as well." "Don't listen to the lies of that commoner. Bugs like her would do anything to get their way," Zaldon waved off. "Yeah, besides that monster was the one who attacked first and took those two hostage," one of his minions said. "Has there ever been an exam that includes a monster attack, especially for entrance exam?" Leia questioned, confusing the group. "Has there ever been an exam that begins without a professor's supervision? We may be young adults now, but we are still not even students of Flammel Royal Academy. Would it not make sense for the principal or the professors to first announce a monster attack before or a little bit after the monster got loose? The fact that there was no such announcement can only mean that this person is not a monster, but an applicant. Are you fools trying to ruin our name as nobles in eliminating a future peer s***h citizen we are to protect?" "But that thing is not human! Or a crossbreed!" another one of Zaldon's minions retorted. Leia glared at the boy, causing him to flinch. "You dare speak back to me? This school accepts people of all race, gender, and class. And though she may have more animal parts than any crossbreed I've seen, it does not make her a monster, otherwise she would have already caused some sort of destruction! She did not do such a thing, she only summoned up a barrier to protect two people. An example all of you should be doing as nobles. For you people to be so close minded to let a crossbreed do such a thing... I will ask again. Are you fools trying to ruin our name as nobles?!" That question, combined with the facts slapped to their faces, silenced all the nobilities, as they only looked down in shame. Zaldon and his guys, on the other hand, only glared in response, but did not say a word. Satisfied with the silence, Leia turned to us three. "May I ask for you to bring down the barrier? I assure you, I won't let them try any funny business." As she said that, she sent a glare at the other nobles around us, causing them to avoid eye contact with her. Mindy turned to me with a raised brow, silently asking if she should. I nodded in response, finding this girl to be trustworthy. Upon seeing my action, Mindy lowered the wind barrier. As soon as she did, Leia bowed to us three, to many's surprise, even mine. "On behalf of my noble peers, I apologize for their actions," she said. "We have shown you something very unsightly as nobility, as people who should be protecting commoners and fight alongside future peers, not taking ridiculous actions against them. Words may not be enough, but they are all I can provide for now." "O-Oh, it's fine, really! They were only acting upon themselves, that's all," the commoner girl said. "What she said," I agreed. "After all, there are all sorts of people out there, even amongst the nobles. There's no way all nobles are like them, especially not after how you saved us." Leia raised her head at our responses, a relieved smile on her face. "I am glad to hear you hold no grudge over this. Please, allow me to at least lead you to registration. I'm on my way to attend for the entrance exam as well." "Oh! That would be wonderful!" the commoner said. "Yeah, that'll be a big help," I said. "It's the least I could do after what you three had gone through. Please, right this way." Without another word, Leia led us into the building to where registration would be. As we walked, Mindy came closer to me. "Lady Levi, are you sure we can trust this girl?" she asked in a whisper. "At the very least, she is nothing like the nobles back there. I'd say she's trustworthy," I answered. Mindy seemed unsure at my response, but nodded anyway, deciding to trust my words.
