With the last classmate joined in our group, I had returned to my dorm to call it a day. When I arrived there, I saw the temporary treehouse I made with my commoner peers became good as new. Not only that, but a couple more trees were planted in the area, each not as big as the first tree, but with a treehouse like it. Though those were still work-in-progress.
“How have things been going with our classmates?” I asked Mindy.
The two of us were situated in the first treehouse. I had wanted to sleep on the hammock again, but Azalea and the girls insisted Mindy and I stay in the treehouse for the night. None of them said why, but I can guess it was to give us a turn to sleep with a roof over our heads.
“They’ve been making some progress in meditation,” Mindy reported. “Thanks to that, the commoners had tapped into more mana than they initially thought they had. The crossbreeds were nervous around us, at the beginning. Though the bull one had quite the temper. When he saw us meditating, he assumed that everyone was nothing but a lazy weakling.”
“Is that why I saw him all beat up when I passed by him on the way here?” I questioned, recalling when I saw our four crossbreed classmates as I walked to the dorm. The bull one, Taurus, was quite beaten and bruised when I saw them. I wanted to ask what happened, but the guy had quite the grumpy expression on his face, so I didn’t even approach them.
“Oh no. I understood why he thought that. And Sheera explained to him that it was an exercise for our magic,” Mindy corrected. “That beat up was because he had insulted you, milady. Claimed that you were just a nobody of a commoner who knew nothing about how magic really works, and that your methods are useless. I was not going to let him insult you like that, so I had to discipline him a little.”
The fact she could say that in such a proud tone kind of spooked me, if I could be honest. I appreciate the respect, and I knew how much she cares about me, but there are times when that sort of care is quite unnecessary. Not that I ever told her that, though; scary as she can be in cases regarding me, she did them all out of pure intentions. Knowing this, there was no way I could ever stop her from doing as she liked. Besides, it was not as though she killed the guy. … I hope she does not resort to merciless killing for my sake.
“W-Well… As long as he still trains with us…” I said. “And the nobles?”
“Surprisingly obedient, so to speak. After my first impression with nobles, I did not think they would be so cooperative. Well… One of them more or less only got friendly with us upon Lilith’s request…”
It did not take a genius to know Mindy was referring to Ethan right there. He did join because Lilith did, after all. “And what about the one with them? Kyle?”
“The half crossbreed? Well, the others were surprised to find out he was half human and half cross.”
I raised my brow in confusion at those words. “You mean you weren’t?”
“I kind of sensed it from the air around him. He may look human, but there was something about the atmosphere that seemed animal-like. It was faint, but far too lingering to simply be from hanging around other crossbreeds. I was more surprised when he suddenly apologized to me.”
That caught my attention more than before. “Apologized? For what?”
“That’s what I asked. Apparently, he was apologizing for injuring you.”
At that response, my mind went back to when Kyle was in his Feral State, and when he dug his claws into my shoulder. It recovered now, save for five scar marks left on it, as well as five holes on the sleeve of my uniform.
“I was surprised and in disbelief at first, but after you’ve returned… Maybe I should’ve at least blew him away,” the harpy then said.
“It’s not his fault, Mindy,” I told her. “He was in his Feral State, so he had no control over his actions. Plus, he was scared, after what those other nobles did to him."Mindy looked down with a sigh. "Yeah, I guess that's true... Besides, I couldn't be angry at him even if I did believe you got hurt. It was those i***t nobles' fault, after all."
"Yeah. If anything, I think he can learn a lot from you, Mindy."
Mindy looked up at me in confusion at those words. "Huh? How come?"
I could only divert my eyes away playfully in response. I could tell her Kyle reminded me a lot of her, but I think I'll keep that to myself. "Who knows~"
Of course, the harpy did not seem amuse with the response. "Lady Levi, I respect you and care for you. But I don't like to be teased, and I know that was a tease."
Her reaction made me laugh in amusement, until I realized one thing. "By the way, there should've been another noble joining. Female, by the name of Dora. Did she ever arrive?"
"No. At least, not that I know," Mindy answered. "The only nobles that arrived were Felix, Lilith, Ethan, and Kyle. In which speaking of, what about that Dylan guy? Did he...?"
"He'll come starting tomorrow," I assured. "I guess I'll look for Dora, tomorrow. She may have forgotten where I told her the training ground would be, or got too busy working in the library to come."
"After the help she had given you, milady, I doubt she will not come."
I nodded in agreement to the harpy's words and lied in bed. "Well, we should get some sleep. Tomorrow's a big day of training, after all."
At my words, Mindy suddenly let out a light gasp and dug into her bag. "I almost forgot! I took down notes of the magic everyone used during training. I thought we could look at them together and come up with proper training regime for them," she suggested.
I was bewildered at that before taking the stack. "Couldn't you do that yourself?"
"I could, but your ideas for training seemed more effective, especially as you get a better understanding of how magic works. You did for yourself, and for me. Plus, that meditation helped the commoners slowly realize more of their potential with magic. In all honesty, I think- no, I know you make a better trainer than me!"
Puzzled as I was for Mindy's faith in me, even if she was already loyal enough, a smile formed on my face when she said that. Well, not that I could blame her, as I had incorporated some knowledge from my previous life into the training. That is... knowledge from story books, cartoons, and movies.
"Well, when you put it that way, I guess we can spend a little more of the night coming up with something for each of them. Let's come up with some ideas together," I said.
Mindy had a joyful expression on her face when I said that, with her ears lightly flapping about. "Yes, ma'am!"
