Chapter III

As the class talked about filling in the roles for their play, Zian's name came up as a possible male lead. Recognizing his charisma and stage presence, the students nodded in agreement. Tasha yelled, "Zian would be perfect for the role," and the class members joined in her enthusiasm. Zelene took over after deciding on the male lead, her determined gaze beaming as she started deciding which parts to give the other characters. As she described her idea for the play, they enthusiastically listened and nodded in accord with her decisions. "Okay, so Amora will be the female lead opposite Zian," Zelene said with assurance in her voice. "And for the supporting roles, we'll have Tasha as the quirky best friend, Chase as the charming sidekick, and Nina as the lovable comic relief." The students supported Zelene's decisions and were excited to see her vision realized on stage. Zelene smiled and told them she would get to work on the script that evening. The students engaged in lively conversation with their friends and seatmates while they waited for their next class. Zelene and the others laughed at Nina and Nigel's humorous arguments, which were usual of their mocking wit. Tasha mocked, "Come on, Nigel, we all know you secretly have a crush on Nina," which caused Nigel to mockingly frown. With a pretend annoyed roll of her eyes, Nina laughed. "Please, Nigel, you couldn't handle me," she asked with a friendly nudge to him. Zelene's focus, however, drifted from the jokes and laughing to the back of the classroom, where Rowan and his friends were deep in conversation. Their laughter boomed throughout the room, a sharp contrast to the turbulence within her own heart, though she was unable to hear what they were saying. Zelene's reverie was interrupted as her phone buzzed with a text message. She looked at the screen, frowning, her heart thumping as she read the message from her ex lover, Matthew. The recollections of his betrayal caused her heart to tighten with a mixture of sorrow and hate. She had discovered his infidelity three months ago, and his betrayal wounded her deeply not only because of his actions but also because she had trusted him and the people he had confided in. Zelene inhaled deeply and forced herself to ignore the unpleasant thoughts, telling herself that she deserved better than someone who would so blatantly violate her trust. She nodded determinedly, erased the message, and concentrated on the thrill of the upcoming play project. Tasha's keen eyes saw the flicker of pain in her friend Zelene's gaze as she sat there, her heart heavy with the weight of memories sparked by the text message from her ex. With a look of concern on her face, she had to ask, "Zelene, who was that?" Taken aback by Tasha's statement, Zelene sighed. She didn't think anyone would see her vulnerable moment. "It's Matthew," she muttered, her voice almost audible above a whisper. Their friends responded to the news with a chorus of ire. Never one to back down, Chase immediately offered his counsel. "Block his number, Zelene," he commanded, his voice stern. "He doesn't deserve to have any more of your time or attention." Next up was Nigel, whose fists clenched with rage. He uttered the words, "That jerk doesn't deserve to even breathe the same air as you," in a voice full of justified anger. "If I ever see him again, I'll give him a piece of my mind." Unity, her own rage burning just below the surface, nodded in agreement. Her voice was colored with intention as she replied, "He's scum for hurting you like this, Zelene. You deserve so much better." Not even the life of the party Tasha and Nina could disguise their disgust at Matthew's behavior. Tasha said, her mouth clinched with rage, "I can't believe he had the nerve to message you after everything he put you through." Nina's face expressed exactly what her friend was thinking. "He's not worth your time, Zelene," she stated strongly, her conviction glaring in her eyes. Chase, who was always the voice of reason, gave Zelene a steady look. "You'll find someone who loves you the way you deserve to be loved, Zelene," he whispered softly. "Don't waste another moment dwelling on the past. We're all here for you, no matter what." Zelene experienced an overwhelming sense of thankfulness for her friends' unwavering support. She nodded and grinned gratefully, finding solace in the fact that she was surrounded by people who genuinely loved and cared for her. Looking ahead, she knew she could conquer anything as long as her friends were there to support her. When the next class started, Zelene was absorbed in the subject matter and her mind kept going back to her earlier dealing with Matthew. Grateful for the distraction from her chaotic emotions, she concentrated on her professor's remarks. Zelene headed to the cafeteria with her friends at noon, laughing and chatting along the way. Ever the gentleman, Nigel and Chase insisted on buying their meal, and Zelene was appreciative of their thoughtfulness. Zelene's eyes accidentally followed the group of friends sitting at the table across from them as they took their seats. Zelene felt a flush came up her cheeks at the sudden connection as their eyes locked once more. She was taken aback when Rowan gave her a tiny smile in return, maintaining a silent gaze. Zelene felt a surge of warmth rush through her veins as she saw it, making her heart skip a beat. Zelene was taken aback by her own response and wondered quietly if Rowan had noticed her blushing. Could it be that she was starting to become attracted of him? She felt a surge of excitement and a trace of nervousness at the same time. Zelene squared her shoulders and looked directly at Rowan again, a timid grin curling her lips. She was surprised to see that Rowan, obviously taken aback by her boldness, widened his eyes in response. He lowered his head slightly, his expression sincere and kind as a smile tugged at his lips. Zelene's heart quickened with excitement as she saw it, her heart skipping a beat. Zelene couldn't help but believe that there might be more between them than simply a fleeting glimpse as she observed Rowan's response. As their gazes locked once more, she couldn't help but wonder what was next. Samuel walked up to Unity's table as lunchtime broke in the busy cafeteria, a warm smile on his lips as he greeted her. Samuel was all smiles when he asked, "Hey, Unity, do you mind if I grab some roses from your backyard later? My younger sister needs them for her Science project." Unity grinned and nodded. "Of course, Samuel, help yourself," she waved in response. Samuel surprised Zelene by waving a friendly hello and nodding gratefully. She gave him a startled blink of surprise, then cautiously smiled back. "Hello, Samuel," she murmured. Zelene could not help but notice the intensity with which Rowan was staring at her when Samuel returned to his table. She couldn't quite make out what was going on in his eyes—perhaps a trace of jealousy. Taken aback by the unexpected close attention, Zelene promptly went back to her food, her thoughts racing. What had provoked Rowan to respond in this way to her encounter with Samuel? Zelene was determined not to let the unexpected experience bring her down, so she pushed aside the unanswered issues that were bothering her and concentrated on enjoying her food. There were still projects to finish, and friendships to treasure, after all.
