As Zelene and Chase entered the classroom, their easygoing dynamic filled the air with laughter and warmth. Chase's teasing about Zelene's height brought a playful smile to her lips, and she responded in kind, their easy banter a testament to their close friendship. "Hey, I'll have you know, I'm perfectly fine being vertically challenged," Zelene quipped, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "It's not my fault I've got stuff to carry around!" Chase chuckled, his expression fond. "Fair point," he conceded with a grin. "But just remember, it's what's on the inside that counts. And you've got beauty, brains, and everything in between." Zelene's cheeks warmed at his words, a genuine smile lighting up her face. "Thanks, Chase," she said softly, feeling a surge of gratitude for her supportive friend. Their lighthearted exchange was interrupted by Nina's teasing comment about taking their relationship to the next level, which elicited laughter from their friends. But the jovial atmosphere was shattered when Rowan stormed into the room, his demeanor dark and intense. The loud thud of Rowan slamming his book onto the table reverberated through the classroom, sending a shiver down Zelene's spine. All eyes turned to him, and the room fell into a heavy silence as Rowan's piercing gaze landed squarely on Zelene. Zelene's heart skipped a beat as she met Rowan's intense stare, her breath catching in her throat. She felt a rush of panic flood through her veins as Rowan's eyes bore into hers, his expression unreadable. Then, without a word, Rowan's gaze flicked down to where Zelene's hand had been resting on Chase's arm. Zelene's heart sank as she realized the implication of Rowan's scrutiny, and she quickly withdrew her hand, a flush of embarrassment coloring her cheeks. Chase's confusion mirrored Zelene's own, and he looked between her and Rowan with furrowed brows. "What's going on?" he asked, his voice filled with concern. Zelene could only shake her head, her mind racing with questions and uncertainty. As the tension in the room thickened, she couldn't help but wonder what had sparked Rowan's sudden outburst, and what it meant for their already complicated dynamic. As Zelene nervously made her way back to her seat, Chase followed closely behind, his expression mirroring her confusion and concern. Tasha's probing question hung in the air, and Zelene could feel the weight of her friends' curious gazes upon her. "What's going on, Zelene?" Tasha asked, her voice filled with concern. "Is there something between you and Rowan that we don't know about?" Zelene shook her head, her mind racing with unanswered questions. "I don't know," she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "I'm just as confused as you guys. Maybe they just assumed it's all about me." Nigel chimed in, his voice serious. "The way Rowan looked at you and Chase earlier... it was like he was ready to snap," he said, his brows furrowed with concern. Nina nodded in agreement. "Yeah, he was definitely angry," she added. "It felt like he was staking his claim, like you belong to him or something." Unity's words sent a chill down Zelene's spine. "Maybe he's jealous," she suggested quietly. "I mean, he did look pretty upset when he saw your hand wrapped around Chase's arm." Tasha couldn't contain her excitement any longer, and she let out a loud gasp. "Oh my gosh, Zelene, do you think... Rowan likes you?" she exclaimed, her eyes wide with anticipation. Zelene's heart skipped a beat at the suggestion, her mind reeling with the possibility. Could it be true? Could Rowan's sudden outburst be fueled by jealousy and unspoken feelings? As she grappled with the idea, uncertainty and apprehension clouded her thoughts, leaving her unsure of what to do next. As Zelene sought solace beneath the shade of the trees, her mind churned with questions and uncertainties, the events of the day weighing heavily on her heart. Why had Rowan reacted so strongly? And why had she felt the need to appease him, to distance herself from Chase in his presence? Lost in her thoughts, Zelene was startled when she heard her name called out. She turned to find Rowan standing before her, his expression unreadable. Nerves gripped her, her hands trembling as she awaited his explanation. "What are you doing here?" Zelene asked, her voice barely above a whisper, her heart pounding in her chest. Rowan hesitated for a moment before speaking, his tone somber. "I wanted to clarify something," he began. "What happened earlier... it had nothing to do with you. I was just... in a bad mood." Zelene's brow furrowed in confusion, but before she could respond, Rowan continued, his words heavy with regret. "I heard what our classmates were saying. About us," he admitted. "But it's not true. We're just... classmates." A pang of disappointment shot through Zelene's chest at Rowan's words, the reality of their situation crashing down around her. She felt the sting of tears threatening to spill over, but she forced herself to nod, unable to meet Rowan's gaze. Rowan's expression softened slightly, his voice tinged with remorse. "I'm glad we're on the same page," he said quietly, a hint of teasing in his tone. "And, uh... sorry if I gave you the wrong idea." Zelene managed a strained smile, her heart heavy with disappointment. "It's okay," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "Thanks for clearing things up." With that, she turned away, the weight of her emotions threatening to overwhelm her. As she walked away, tears stung her eyes, her heart aching with the realization that the connection she had hoped for with Rowan was nothing more than a figment of her imagination. As Rosalie requested, the class stayed behind, their attention fixed on Zelene as she prepared to present the script she had meticulously crafted. Zelene stood before them, her gaze avoiding Rowan's, her voice steady as she outlined the storyline of their romcom play. "It's about a one-sided love," she explained, her words carrying a weight of sadness. "The male lead, Zian, gives false hope to Amore, the female lead, but eventually realizes his mistake." Rosalie inquired if Zelene would be acting as well, but Zelene shook her head, a hint of melancholy in her response. "No," she replied softly. "I'll be focusing on the script." Gio, one of Rowan's friends, interjected, his curiosity evident. "Who will be Rowan's partner in the play?" he asked. Zelene hesitated for a moment before answering, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "It'll be Lianne," she said, her tone lacking its usual confidence. "But if Rowan doesn't want it, I can find another role." With that, Zelene thanked her classmates for their time and dismissed them. Gathering her belongings, she made her way out of the classroom, her heart heavy with unspoken emotions. She bid her friends goodbye, explaining that she wasn't feeling well and needed to go home. Outside, without a backward glance, Zelene hurried away, her steps quickening as she sought solace in the familiarity of home. Yet, despite her best efforts to push aside her feelings, the encounter with Rowan lingered in her mind, leaving her with a sense of unease that she couldn't shake.
