Chapter XIII

Zelene lay on her towel beside the shore, basking in the warm sunlight with her friends and classmates. She wore her sunglasses and stretched out, feeling the warmth seep into her skin. As Benedict approached and was about to sit down beside her, a firm voice interrupted. "Move," Rowan commanded. Samuel laughed and called out to Benedict, "Hey, man, better listen to him." Benedict got the message, smiled teasingly, and tapped Rowan’s shoulder before walking away. Rowan stood over Zelene, holding her cover-up. "Get up and put this on," he ordered. Zelene took off her sunglasses and glared at him. "Leave me alone, Rowan. I'm enjoying the sun. Don’t be such a killjoy." Rowan’s eyes were steely. "I said, get up and wear the cover-up, Zelene." She shook her head defiantly. "No." Rowan's voice dropped to a dangerous low. "I will do what I said earlier if you don’t get up and wear this. I’m not joking. One... two..." At "three," Zelene stood up, frustrated and nervous. She knew Rowan was serious. She grabbed the cover-up from his hands and put it on. "Happy now?" she snapped. Rowan surprised her by taking off his own shirt and handing it to her. "Wear this too. Any moment now, I’m ready to punch the eyes out of every guy here who’s looking at you and your body. My patience is running out." Zelene glanced around and saw the shocked faces of their classmates and friends. She even heard Chase ask Nina, "What’s going on? Do Rowan and Zelene have something we don’t know about?" Nina just smiled in response. Rowan’s friends whistled, clearly amused by the scene. Zelene took the shirt and put it on over her cover-up. She then looked at Rowan, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Fine, but you should get a new shirt for yourself too. I don’t want anyone looking at your firm body either. That’s mine to look at." Rowan blushed, a faint red creeping up his neck, but he quickly looked away. He turned and started walking back to his room, presumably to get a shirt. Their classmates erupted in cheers and laughter, clearly thrilled by the interaction. "Wow, Rowan and Zelene, huh?" Chase laughed, nudging Nigel. Nigel chuckled. "Looks like it." Zelene’s friends gathered around her, giggling and offering support. "That was intense," Unity said, her eyes wide with excitement. "Yeah, but kind of sweet too," Tasha added. Nina grinned. "You handled that well, Zelene. I think he’s really into you." Zelene smiled, feeling a mix of embarrassment and thrill. She couldn’t deny the spark she felt when Rowan was around, even if he could be overbearing at times. She watched him walk away, her heart racing with a mix of emotions. As the sun set, casting a warm orange glow across the shore, the group began gathering their things. Rowan returned, now wearing a white shirt, just as Rosalie called everyone to announce that their early dinner was ready. They all headed to the dining area of the resort, where they shared stories and laughter over a delicious meal. After eating, they dispersed to their assigned rooms to change clothes for the evening. In her room, Zelene took a quick shower and put on a black denim short, a white shirt with a cheeky "eat me" print on the front, and her pink slippers. Her friends, Tasha, Unity, and Nina, decided to match her outfit for fun. They all laughed at their coordinated look, feeling the carefree joy of the night ahead. When they returned to the cottage, the atmosphere was lively. Their classmates were scattered around, some holding beers, others playing cards, and couples enjoying each other's company. Zelene's eyes found Rowan across the way, standing with his friends. He was wearing a dark blue polo with the top three buttons undone, revealing a glimpse of his chest, paired with white pants and black Nike slides. The intensity of his gaze made her heart race. Chase came over, offering beers to Tasha and Unity, while Nigel handed Zelene a glass of juice, saying, "We know you're not allowed to drink. Here’s something for you." She smiled gratefully. "Thanks, Nigel." An hour passed, and the group grew merrier with each drink. The air filled with music, laughter, and the warm buzz of camaraderie. Tasha pulled Zelene up to dance, and she joined in, feeling the rhythm of the night. Though she only had juice, the infectious energy made her feel light and carefree. As the lights dimmed and only the phone flashlights illuminated the dancing crowd, Zelene felt a familiar hand wrap around her waist. She turned to find Rowan's face close to hers, his eyes burning with intensity. "Why are you wearing something like that?" he asked, his voice low and rough. Zelene smirked, meeting his gaze. "Are you tempted?" Rowan leaned closer, his breath warm against her ear. "Yes, I am. And if I can't control myself, I'll carry you to my room right now and do exactly what your shirt says." Feeling a surge of boldness, Zelene whispered back, "Then do it." For a moment, they stood locked in a charged silence, Rowan’s eyes dark with desire. Zelene's fingers traced a path from his neck down to his exposed chest. The touch was electric, sending shivers through both of them. Then, with a playful smile, she turned away and resumed dancing with her friends. Rowan watched her for a moment, a mix of admiration and frustration in his eyes. He was drawn to her in a way he couldn’t fully understand, and her daring response only fueled the fire. As the night deepened, the energy from the cottage party began to wane. Zelene looked around and saw her friends and classmates, most of them now heavily intoxicated. She leaned over to Unity and said, "I'm going to head back to our room. I'm getting tired." Unity nodded and smiled at her, her words slurred slightly. "Okay, Z. Get some rest. Don't worry about us, we'll be fine." Zelene gave her a reassuring smile before heading off. As she walked toward her room, Samuel called out to her, stopping her in her tracks. "Hey, Zelene! Can you return Rowan's shirt to his room? It's the last room on the left." Zelene hesitated. "Is Rowan in there?" Samuel shrugged. "I don't know. But you can use this key card to get in and just leave the shirt inside." He handed her the card. Taking the card, Zelene nodded. "Alright, thanks." She went to her room first to grab Rowan's shirt, then made her way to his room. She knocked twice, thinking of the possibility that Nisha might be inside. After a few moments with no response, she used the key card to open the door and stepped inside. The room was more luxurious than hers, with a queen-size bed, a closed bathroom door, and a television. As she placed the shirt on the table, she heard the bathroom door open. Turning around, she saw Rowan stepping out, fresh from a shower, with only a black short on. His wet hair dripped slightly onto his shoulders, making him look even more striking. "What are you doing here?" he asked, smirking. Zelene blushed, feeling her heart race. "Samuel gave me the key card and asked me to return your shirt. I didn't know you were here. But I'm leaving now." Rowan walked toward her, closing the distance between them. His presence was overwhelming. "You don't have to leave," he said, gently caressing her cheek. "Stay here. Your friends are still partying and drunk. You can watch something on Netflix. It's better for you to stay for a while since you're alone out there." Zelene felt a mix of fear and curiosity. Maybe, just maybe, Rowan would be different tonight. She nodded, and he turned off the main lights, leaving only the lamp and the glow from the television. "Choose whatever you want to watch," Rowan said, sitting on the bed beside her, though he kept a respectful distance. She picked "The Prince and Me," a comforting choice. She settled on the right side of the bed, leaning against the headboard, and pulled the blanket over her legs. Rowan sat beside her, maintaining a couple of feet between them, both focused on the movie in silence. As the film played, the tension between them seemed to ease, and the awkward silence gradually turned into a comfortable quiet. Zelene could feel Rowan's presence next to her, but he made no move to close the distance. She glanced at him occasionally, noting how his expression softened in the low light. During a particularly romantic scene in the movie, Zelene couldn't help but steal another glance at Rowan. He caught her looking and turned to meet her gaze. There was something unspoken in his eyes, a vulnerability she hadn't seen before.
