Chapter VII

Rowan's words hung in the air. "What if I’m going to make sure you’ll be mine?" Zelene blushed deeply, her heart beating loud and fast in her chest. Rowan walked towards her with purposeful strides, and Zelene found herself unable to move, locked in an intense stare with him. When Rowan stood just three inches away from her, Zelene gulped, feeling a mixture of anticipation and confusion. He reached out and gently caressed her right cheek, his touch sending shivers down her spine. He smiled softly at her before turning and heading back inside the classroom where the practice was happening. Zelene stayed there for a moment, trying to compose herself. Her mind was racing with thoughts of Rowan's unexpected words and actions. She took a deep breath and finally walked back inside, her steps more deliberate now. As she entered, she headed straight for Chase, who was standing beside Nigel. Chase immediately noticed her pale face and cold hands. He held her hand and asked, "What happened, Zelene? Why are your hands so cold?" Zelene shook her head, trying to dismiss his concern. "There's nothing wrong, Chase. I’m just not feeling well." Chase looked at her with a mix of worry and affection. He put his arm around her shoulders and kissed her head gently. "You should sit down for a while and rest." Zelene smiled gratefully at him and walked to her chair. As she sat down, she noticed Rowan watching her intently from across the room, his eyes dark and unreadable. The rest of the class continued their practice, but Zelene couldn’t focus. She kept replaying Rowan's words and the way he had touched her cheek in her mind. What did he mean? Was he serious? Her heart raced with uncertainty and excitement. As the school day ended, Zelene packed her things slowly, her mind still reeling from the day's events. Unity approached her, a friendly smile on her face. "Hey, Zelene, do you want to grab a coffee at the nearby coffee shop?" Unity asked. Zelene shook her head, giving a small, tired smile. "Thanks, Unity, but I think I’ll head home. I’m not feeling well. Maybe next time?" Unity nodded understandingly. "Of course. Take care of yourself and get some rest. See you tomorrow." Zelene thanked her and made her way out of the university. As she walked through the gates, she noticed Rowan and Samuel standing beside their motorcycles, deep in conversation and sipping colas. She quickened her pace, hoping to avoid any further interaction with Rowan today. Just then, she heard Chase calling her name. She looked back to see Chase pulling his car up beside her. "Hey, Zelene," Chase said, leaning out the window. "Let me give you a ride home." Relieved, Zelene climbed into the passenger seat. "Thanks, Chase." The ride was quiet, and Zelene appreciated the silence as she tried to sort through her thoughts. In just two minutes, they arrived at her house. "Thanks again, Chase," Zelene said as she unbuckled her seatbelt. "I’ll see you tomorrow." "No problem," Chase replied with a warm smile. "Take care, Zelene." Zelene got out of the car and waved goodbye. She walked into her house and went straight to her room, collapsing onto her bed. The weight of the day’s emotions caught up with her, and she drifted off to sleep almost immediately. She was awakened by the sound of her mother calling her for dinner. Groggily, she sat up and realized she had been asleep for hours. She got up and headed to the dining room, where her family was already seated. "Zelene, you’ve been sleeping since you got home," her mother said with a hint of concern in her voice. "Are you feeling okay?" Zelene nodded as she took her seat. "Yeah, Mom. Just a bit tired. School’s been a bit overwhelming." Her father looked at her with a gentle smile. "Well, make sure you get enough rest. And if you need to talk about anything, we’re here." Zelene smiled back, feeling a bit more at ease. "Thanks, Dad. I will." As they began to eat, Zelene’s mind wandered back to Rowan. She knew she needed to confront her feelings and decide what she truly wanted. But for now, she was grateful for the comfort of her family and the promise of a new day tomorrow. The next morning, Zelene woke up with a renewed sense of purpose. She decided to focus on her studies and try to navigate her complicated feelings about Rowan by either avoiding him or, if that failed, trying to make friends with him. She arrived at school early, and finding that her friends hadn't arrived yet, she headed to the cafeteria to grab a sandwich and a hot chocolate. As she settled into a quiet corner, savoring her breakfast, a sudden thud startled her. A bag landed on the table in front of her, followed by Rowan sliding into the seat across from her, his expression serious. Zelene blinked in surprise. "Rowan? What are you doing here?" Without preamble, Rowan asked, "Do you and Chase have something special going on?" Zelene’s shock deepened. "Why are you asking that? It's none of your business." "It is my business," Rowan replied heatedly. "Why the hell did Chase kiss you yesterday?" Confused, Zelene frowned. "When did Chase kiss me?" "Yesterday, after our encounter outside," Rowan said, his eyes intense and unwavering. Zelene scoffed, irritation bubbling up inside her. "So what if he did? Chase and I have known each other for years. And again, it’s none of your business." "I don't want anyone touching you, or kissing you," Rowan declared, his voice low but firm. Zelene stood up abruptly, her irritation boiling over. "I am not yours, Rowan. We're just classmates who barely know each other!" Rowan stood up as well, his eyes locking onto hers. "Whatever it is, you will always be mine. No more questions and doubts." They stared at each other, their annoyance palpable. To an onlooker, they might have seemed like a couple in the midst of a heated argument. Frustrated, Zelene grabbed her bag. "f**k you, Rowan." As she stormed off, Rowan's voice echoed through the cafeteria. "I will, soon!" Her face flushed a deep red, Zelene didn't look back. She ran towards their classroom, her heart pounding as if it might burst from her chest. She could hardly process the mix of emotions—anger, confusion, and a strange exhilaration—that coursed through her. When she finally reached the classroom, she slumped into her seat, trying to calm her racing heart. This unexpected confrontation had left her shaken, but also strangely more aware of her feelings. She realized that her heart had reacted not just out of irritation, but out of something deeper that she wasn't ready to confront just yet.
