There was a flutter of excitement in the classroom as Zelene and her friends arrived for the lessons of the day. Zelene felt her heart skip a beat as Rowan's eyes lingered on her as they took their seats. Her cheeks flushed, and she wondered why his stare had such an intense impact on her. With a playful grin in her eye, Nina's words interrupted her thoughts before she had a chance to ponder any further. With a humorous smile on her lips, she said, "Hey, Zelene, do you have the notes from yesterday's Theater Arts class?" Zelene laughed, recognizing she had been exposed. She sheepishly said, "Oops, I may have been a bit distracted," and gave Nina her notebook. "But don't worry, I've got you covered." Mr. Pisani entered the room, demanding the attention of the whole class while Nina turned the pages and looked over Zelene's swiftly scrawled notes. He greeted his students with a pleasant smile and an infectious zeal, outlining the schedule for the day. "Good morning, everyone! I hope you're all ready for an exciting day of learning," Mr. Pisani said with a lively voice. "Now, as you may have heard, we have a special project coming up." The idea of a project made the students sit up, and as Mr. Pisani proceeded, curiosity sparked in their eyes. "We'll be putting on a stage play as a class—a collaborative effort from start to finish. We'll need to assign roles, choose a script, gather props, and of course, rehearse until we're ready for opening night!" The idea of writing their own play caused excitement to spread across the room, and Zelene couldn't help but get swept up in it. She glanced at Rowan, who appeared to be just as excited about the prospect, and a tinge of excitement prickled her chest. Perhaps, just perhaps, this endeavor would be the ideal way to learn more about him. Excitement swept the room as the topic of their next stage play's roles came up for discussion in class. After Rosalie was chosen as the director, Zelene was the focus of attention for the next important choice: the screenwriter. With a sneaky smirk playing on his lips, Chase said, "Well, it seems like the next natural choice for script writer would be Zelene," staring at Zelene. Zelene was filled with delight that those around her thought highly of her writing skills. Being a writer for the school publication, she was well recognized for her skill with writing. The class gave a collective nod of approval and Zelene was elected to write the script. She couldn't help but become giddy at the thought of using her words to bring their performance to life. Zelene turned to her students and said, "So, what do we want our play to be about?" Tasha was the first to make a suggestion, her eagerness evident in her eyes. "How about we incorporate technology into the play? Like, a futuristic setting or something," she asked enthusiastically. Chase gave a nod of approval. He continued, his mind already buzzing with ideas, "Yeah, and we could add some mystery elements to keep the audience on the edge of their seats." With eagerness in his voice, Samuel held out his hand. He smiled and said, "Or we could make it like an anime, with epic battles and dramatic twists." Rosalie's close friend Amora added her own suggestion. With a lighthearted smile, she said, "How about a romantic comedy?" The concept of a romantic comedy play excited the girls, who burst out laughing. They exchanged a short glance and decided that a romantic comedy would be the ideal genre for their production. Observing the girls' delight, the boys agreed to the popular vote with a resigned bob of the head. Ultimately, it was about collaborating as a group to produce something genuinely remarkable. They also knew they were in good hands because Zelene was the script writer and was guiding the process. The students were laughing and giggling as they planned their romantic comedy performance. As they debated who should play the lead parts, Nina—always the joker—could not help but offer a lighthearted proposal. Nina smiled and said, "Well, since it's partly comedy, I think it's only natural for me to be the female lead," her mischievous eyes glistening. At her audacious declaration, the class burst out laughing, their laughter contagious as they made fun of Nina's confidence. Ever the nosy one, Nigel had to ask more questions. He laughed and said, "Where do you find all that confidence, Nina?" Nina gave him a teasing smile. Her comment drew further laughing from their classmates. "Oh, I don't know, Nigel. Maybe it's because I heard you've got a little crush on me," she taunted. However, Willa, a rival student well-known for her competitive spirit, raised her hand and asked to take the floor just as the laughing was starting to fade. As the students went hushed and waited for Willa to speak, their curiosity was peaked. Willa started up by saying, "I just want to say that Rosalie can't possibly direct the play beautifully. I mean, she's got a child to take care of." Her tone was slightly harsh. Willa's surprising statement caused a ripple effect of murmuring across the class. Rosalie, a teenage mother renowned for her commitment to her education, squatted her shoulders and showed her determination. With confidence, Rosalie said, "I can do it. I have the support of my family and my boyfriend, and I'm fully capable of balancing my responsibilities as a student and a mother." But Willa was far from done. She shifted her focus to Zelene and made another charge, her words overflowing with jealousy. With a harsh tone, Willa went on, "And as for Zelene, let's not forget that she's not really a talented writer. She just pretends to be good at it." Even though Zelene was slightly offended by Willa's remarks, she remained firm and kept her head high. "Take the role if you think you can do a better job, Willa," Zelene said coolly, her voice steady even in the face of Willa's hurtful remarks. But before Willa could answer, Tasha sprang to her feet and confronted their classmate with a pointed look. Tasha aggressively stepped in, "The class voted for Zelene and Rosalie for those roles because we trust and believe in them." "It's time to set aside your bitterness and cooperate with the class, Willa." The class became silent again, the tension evident as they awaited Willa's response, Tasha's comments hanging in the air. Rosalie took the lead again during the class discussion, speaking in a calm but assertive tone when she addressed the topic of selecting a director and screenwriter. Rosalie asked, her eyes searching the audience for agreement, "Let's put it to a vote again. Who do you want to be the director and script writer for our play?" However, before anyone could reply, all of their classmates determinedly piped up at once. "We want Zelene and you for the roles," Tasha said in a tone that was unambiguous. "And Willa, it's time to set aside your personal grievances and cooperate for the success of our project." Frustrated, Willa rolled her eyes, but said nothing since she knew most people had already spoken. The class focused on casting the play's main characters after deciding on the director and script writer assignments. They debated for a while before deciding that Amora would be the ideal female lead because of her talent for acting and emotional range. However, the boys didn't appear to want to take the lead when it came to picking the male character. There were many excuses shared in the group, from busy schedules to a lack of acting ability. Feeling the hesitation, Willa raised her voice again, this time with resolve. "Rowan has to be the main male character," she urged, keeping her eyes on him. With irritated eyebrows, Rowan gave Willa an annoyed glance. His tone was colored with displeasure as he shot back, "If you want the role so badly, take it yourself." "But don't speak my name for it." Willa continued to make her argument with pleasant attitude, unmoved. She said, "Rowan is perfect for the role." Rowan, though, had had enough. He turned to face Willa and sighed in frustration, his voice full of annoyance. He said, "Just shut up and mind your own business. You're not contributing anything positive to this project with your bitter complaints." Willa lowered her head in surrender, taken aback by Rowan's blunt remarks. Zelene couldn't help but be taken aback by Rowan's audacity. For a split second, their eyes locked, and she looked away, blushing. Zelene couldn't get rid of the feeling that she had that there could be more to Rowan than first glances.
