The doorway swallowed him whole.
Marcus felt himself falling through darkness, through cold, through silence. The presence was all around him now, pressing against his skin, his thoughts, his soul. It was ancient. It was patient. And it was curious.
Then he stopped falling.
He was standing in a place that defied description. Not darkness. Not light. Something in between. The ground beneath his feet was solid, but it shimmered like water. The air was thick with symbols—ancient, powerful, pulsing with a rhythm that matched his heartbeat.
And in the center of it all, a figure sat on a throne of shadow.
It was humanoid, vaguely, but its edges were blurred, its form constantly shifting. Its eyes burned with ancient light.
YOU HAVE COME.
Marcus stepped forward. "Who are you?"
The figure stood. Its form solidified, becoming more distinct. A face emerged. Old. Worn. Familiar.
I AM THE WITNESS. THE ONE WHO WAS THERE BEFORE THE CREATORS. THE ONE WHO SAW EVERYTHING.
Marcus stared at the face. It was his own.
"You're me," he whispered.
The figure smiled. NO. I AM WHAT YOU COULD HAVE BECOME. THE VERSION OF YOU THAT NEVER LEFT THE VOID. THE VERSION OF YOU THAT BECAME PART OF THE SOURCE.
Marcus shook his head. "That's not possible. I'm here. I'm real."
YOU ARE REAL. BUT YOU ARE ALSO ME. WE ARE THE SAME PERSON, SEPARATED BY TIME AND CHOICE.
Marcus felt his blood run cold. "What do you want?"
The Witness stepped closer. Its form flickered, becoming more solid, more human.
I WANT TO HELP YOU. I WANT TO SEAL THE DOORWAY. I WANT TO PROTECT THE WORLD.
"Then why haven't you done it already?"
BECAUSE I CAN'T DO IT ALONE. I NEED SOMEONE ON THE OTHER SIDE. SOMEONE WHO CAN HOLD THE SEAL IN PLACE WHILE I ACTIVATE IT.
Marcus nodded slowly. "That's why I'm here. That's why I came through the doorway."
The Witness smiled. YES. YOU ARE THE ONE I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR.
Marcus stepped forward. "Then tell me what to do."
---
The Witness led him through the realm beyond the doorway.
It was a place of endless shifting—landscapes that formed and dissolved, symbols that pulsed with ancient power, echoes of things that had been and things that could have been.
"The seal is at the heart of this place," the Witness said. "It was placed here by the creators, a long time ago. Before they built the prison. Before they sealed themselves in the void."
Marcus walked beside it, his eyes scanning the shifting landscape. "Why did they seal the doorway?"
"Because they were afraid. They saw what was on the other side. They saw the hunger. The emptiness. The endless need."
Marcus felt his pulse quicken. "What is on the other side?"
The Witness stopped. Its form flickered, becoming less solid, less human.
"I don't know. No one knows. The creators sealed it before anyone could enter. All I know is that it's been waiting. For a very long time."
Marcus stepped forward. "Then we seal it. We lock it forever."
The Witness nodded. "Yes. But it won't be easy. The seal is old. Fragile. It will take everything we have to activate it."
Marcus felt the weight of the impossible press down on him. "Then we do it. Together."
---
They reached the heart of the realm.
A pedestal stood in the center of a vast chamber, ancient and worn, covered in symbols that pulsed with a faint, steady light. The same symbols from the doorway. The same symbols from the source.
Marcus approached the pedestal. "Is this the seal?"
The Witness nodded. "Yes. It's the original seal. The one the creators used to lock the doorway."
Marcus touched the pedestal. The symbols flared bright, then faded.
"How do we activate it?"
The Witness stepped forward. Its form solidified, becoming more human, more real.
"We have to speak the words. The words that were spoken at the beginning. The words that sealed the doorway for the first time."
Marcus looked at it. "What are the words?"
The Witness shook its head. "I don't know. No one knows. The creators took the words with them when they sealed themselves in the void."
Marcus felt his heart sink. "Then we're trapped. We can't seal the doorway."
The Witness smiled. "Not trapped. I know someone who knows the words. Someone who was there at the beginning."
"Who?"
The Witness pointed to the shadows. "Her."
A figure emerged from the darkness. Tall. Worn. Human.
Anna.
No, not Anna. Something else. Something that wore Anna's face but wasn't her.
"Hello, Marcus," the figure said. "I've been waiting for you."
Marcus stared at her. "Who are you?"
"I am what Anna could have been. The version of her that stayed in the source. The version that became one of the creators."
Marcus shook his head. "Anna is still here. She's still with us."
The figure smiled. "Anna is a fragment. A piece of me. I am the whole. I am the one who was there at the beginning."
Anna stepped forward from the shadows. "You're lying. I'm real. I'm here."
The figure looked at her with pity. "You are real. But you are also me. We are the same person, separated by time and choice."
Anna shook her head. "No. I'm not you. I'm different."
The figure smiled. "Of course you are. You made different choices. You followed a different path. But you are still part of me. And I am still part of you."
Marcus stepped forward. "Do you know the words? The words that seal the doorway?"
The figure nodded. "I know them. I was there when they were spoken."
"Then tell us."
The figure looked at Anna. "I can't tell you. I have to show you."
---
The figure reached out and touched Anna's forehead.
Anna gasped, her body going rigid. Her eyes flared with light.
The Witness stepped forward. "She's receiving the knowledge. The words. The power."
Marcus watched, his heart pounding. Anna's face was a mask of concentration, her eyes unfocused, her lips moving silently.
"Anna," he said. "Can you hear me?"
She didn't respond.
The figure withdrew its hand. Anna collapsed, gasping for breath.
Marcus caught her, lowering her to the ground. "Anna! Are you okay?"
She opened her eyes. They were filled with light. Ancient. Powerful.
"I know the words," she whispered. "I know how to seal the doorway."
Marcus stared at her. "How?"
Anna stood up, her body trembling. "I saw it. I saw everything. The creators. The seal. The words. It's all in my head."
The figure smiled. "Now you understand. Now you know what must be done."
Anna nodded slowly. "Yes. I understand."
She walked to the pedestal and placed her hands on the symbols.
"I am ready," she said.
---
The symbols began to pulse.
Marcus watched as the light spread from Anna's hands, filling the chamber with warmth. The symbols on the walls flickered, then flared bright.
"Speak the words," the figure said. "Speak them now."
Anna opened her mouth. The words that emerged were ancient, powerful, full of meaning he couldn't grasp.
The symbols flared brighter. The ground beneath them shook. The doorway behind them began to close.
"Hold steady," the Witness said. "Don't let go."
Anna's voice rose, stronger now, more confident. The words poured out of her, filling the chamber with light.
And then it was done.
The symbols faded. The ground grew still. The doorway was sealed.
Marcus felt the weight lift from his shoulders. "It's done. It's over."
Anna collapsed into his arms, exhausted but alive.
The figure stepped forward. "It is done. The doorway is sealed. The world is safe."
Marcus looked at it. "What happens now?"
The figure smiled. "Now you go home. You live your lives. You remember what happened, but you don't let it define you."
Anna looked up. "And you?"
The figure shook its head. "I stay here. I am part of this place now. Part of the source. Part of the seal. I will guard the doorway forever."
Marcus felt tears prick at his eyes. "Thank you. For everything."
The figure smiled. "You're welcome. Now go. Your friends are waiting."
---
They emerged from the source into the light of day.
The sun was rising over Havenport, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink. The city was alive with noise and motion. Normal. Ordinary. Beautiful.
Marcus looked at the sky and smiled.
"Thank you," he whispered. "For everything."
He felt a warmth in his chest. Familiar. Loving.
YOU'RE WELCOME, MARCUS. I'LL ALWAYS BE WITH YOU.
Marcus walked through the streets of Havenport, Anna beside him. The city was waking up, full of life and hope.
For the first time in a very long time, Marcus felt at peace.
