The Prisoner

The door swung open. Noah stepped through into darkness so complete it felt solid. The air was cold, ancient, thick with the weight of eons. He could feel the presence of the thing that had been sealed here. Not the exiles. Not the shapes. Something older. Something that had existed before the void itself. "Close the door," he said. "Seal it behind me." The door swung shut. The light from the void vanished. He was alone in the absolute dark. Then the darkness began to move. It swirled around him, pressing against his skin, probing his thoughts. A voice emerged from the depths. Not words, exactly. More like feelings. Impressions. Hunger. ANOTHER SACRIFICE. HOW DELICIOUS. Noah forced himself to stay calm. "I'm not here to be consumed. I'm here to seal you in. Permanently." The darkness laughed. It was a cold, hollow sound that echoed through his bones. YOU CANNOT SEAL WHAT WAS NEVER OPEN. I AM THE PRISON. I AM THE PRISONER. I AM THE DOOR. Noah felt his mind reel. "What do you mean?" THE CREATORS DID NOT SEAL ME IN. THEY BUILT THIS PLACE AROUND ME. I AM THE FOUNDATION. THE HEART. THE VOID ITSELF. Noah's blood ran cold. He'd walked into a trap. The darkness wasn't a prisoner. It was the prison. And he was inside it. "I don't believe you," he said. THEN LOOK. The darkness parted. Noah saw the walls of the prison. They were covered in symbols. The same symbols from the door. The same symbols from the void. But they weren't sealing anything in. They were holding something together. Something that was alive. "You're the prison," Noah whispered. "And I'm inside you." YES. AND NOW YOU WILL NEVER LEAVE. --- Noah walked through the darkness. The prison stretched in every direction, endless and empty. The walls were covered in symbols that pulsed with malevolent light. The floor was smooth, cold, like polished stone. He could feel the presence watching him. Waiting. YOU ARE CURIOUS. MOST WHO COME HERE ARE TERRIFIED. BUT YOU ARE CURIOUS. Noah kept walking. "I've been through worse than this." HAVE YOU? YOU'VE FACLED DEATH. YOU'VE FACED THE VOID. BUT YOU'VE NEVER FACED ETERNITY. YOU'VE NEVER FACED FOREVER. Noah stopped. "What do you mean?" THIS PLACE IS ETERNAL. IT EXISTS OUTSIDE TIME. OUTSIDE SPACE. ONCE YOU ENTER, YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE. YOU BECOME PART OF THE PRISON. PART OF ME. Noah felt the weight of the words press down on him. "There has to be a way out." THERE IS. BUT YOU WON'T LIKE IT. "Tell me." YOU HAVE TO BECOME ME. YOU HAVE TO TAKE MY PLACE. YOU HAVE TO BECOME THE PRISON AND THE PRISONER. YOU HAVE TO BE THE DOOR. Noah shook his head. "That's not a way out. That's just a different kind of prison." IT IS THE ONLY WAY. THE ONE WHO CAME BEFORE ME UNDERSTOOD. HE TOOK MY PLACE. AND NOW I AM FREE. Noah felt his heart sink. "Who came before you?" The darkness swirled, forming shapes. A figure emerged. Tall. Worn. Familiar. Franklin Bishop. Noah stared at the apparition. "You. You were the one who wrote the warning." Bishop's form flickered, his eyes hollow. "I wrote the warning because I knew what was coming. I knew someone would have to take my place." Noah stepped forward. "What happened to you?" Bishop smiled. It was a sad smile, full of ancient pain. "I made the sacrifice. I entered the prison. I became the door. And now I'm part of this place. Part of the darkness. Part of forever." Noah felt tears prick at his eyes. "You've been here all this time? Since 1942?" Bishop nodded. "Eighty years. Waiting for someone to take my place. Waiting for someone brave enough to do what I did." Noah shook his head. "I can't. I have people who need me. My friends. My family." "They will survive without you. They have to. The world doesn't stop for one person." Noah looked at the walls of the prison. The symbols pulsed, watching. "There has to be another way," he said. Bishop stepped closer. "There isn't. I've searched for eighty years. I've explored every corner of this place. There is no other way." Noah closed his eyes. The weight of the impossible pressed down on him. "Then I'll stay," he said. "I'll take your place. I'll become the door." Bishop smiled. "You are brave. Braver than I ever was." "I'm not brave. I'm just tired of running." --- The darkness began to change. It swirled around Noah, pressing against his skin. He felt it entering him, becoming part of him. He felt the weight of eternity settling on his shoulders. "Let go," Bishop said. "Let go of everything you are. Everything you were. Let go and become part of the prison." Noah closed his eyes. He let go. He felt his memories fading. His hopes. His dreams. Everything that made him human. He felt himself becoming part of the darkness. Part of the prison. Part of the door. But then he heard a voice. Faint. Distant. Familiar. "Dad." Noah opened his eyes. Lily was standing in front of him. Not a vision. Not a ghost. She was real, solid, alive. "Lily, how are you here?" Lily smiled. "I've always been here. In the crack. In the void. In the space between. I've been waiting for you." Noah shook his head. "You shouldn't be here. It's too dangerous." "I know. But I had to come. I had to warn you." "Warn me about what?" Lily stepped closer. "The prison isn't what it seems. It's not just a place. It's a person. The darkness isn't the enemy. It's the victim." Noah stared at her. "What are you talking about?" Lily touched his face. "The creators didn't build this prison to contain the darkness. They built it to contain someone. Someone they feared." "Who?" Lily's eyes filled with sadness. "Themselves. The creators were afraid of their own power. So they built a prison and sealed themselves inside. The darkness is just a reflection of their fear." Noah felt his mind reel. "Then what do I do?" Lily smiled. "You set them free. You open the door and let them out." --- Noah turned to Bishop. "Is this true?" Bishop's form flickered. "Yes. The creators are trapped in this prison. They've been here since before time began. The darkness is just a manifestation of their fear." Noah stepped forward. "Then I'll free them. I'll open the door." Bishop shook his head. "You can't. The door is sealed. The only way to open it is to become part of it." Noah looked at Lily. "What do I do?" Lily touched his face. "You sacrifice yourself. But not by becoming the prison. By becoming the key. You give yourself to the door, and you open it." Noah nodded slowly. "I understand." He turned to the darkness. "I'm ready." The darkness swirled, pressing against him. He felt himself becoming part of the door. Part of the prison. Part of the creators. And then he felt something else. Something warm. Something familiar. Lily. She was with him. Inside him. Part of him. "Together," she whispered. "We do this together." Noah smiled. "Together." He let go. The door opened.
