Fina (16)
Running, I’m running. I know it’s important that I keep running.
Why? I can’t remember. I just remember his face…all bloody and dirty, telling me to run.
I know what I am, but I can’t remember the rest of me. My paws are sore but I can’t stop. Not right now. Not yet. While I may not remember all the main details, there were a few things I did remember. I was a wolf shifter, I came from pain and heartbreak. I was running to find safety and I had to find him….I had to find safety.
My stomach growled again and I almost whined. I am so hungry but i’m too scared to stop even though I feel myself weakening from the lack of food. As I kept running, I saw the large trees becoming more dense and almost wanted to yelp out in happiness. I would be able to lose whoever had been chasing me easily and I could hide for a bit. I ran towards a cluster of trees where I could see a few rocks and bushes.
Suddenly the sky rumbled and within seconds, it opened up as rain started pelting my fur and matting it. The downpour was so fast and fierce that my back paw slipped a little and I almost went sliding down into the soft mud but I managed to pull myself up in time. Just as I took another step, something whizzed past my ear, making it burn. I looked behind me and almost died of fright.
They found me!
“Hey” The man with a red jacket said “Up ahead. It’s running!”
“Kill it!” A man in a black jumper shouted “No witnesses!”
I ran faster, my right ear now sore. I was too scared to pay attention to it and pushed myself faster. I had to concentrate to make sure I
didn’t slip because if I did, it would surely result in my death.
I felt another bullet whiz by me and curses as they missed me yet again. I dived to the left, almost hitting up against some rocks before I dived right and ran towards the more denser part of this park. I wasn’t sure how big this place was and I couldn’t let myself run out in front of humans. I would be caught for sure
When I dived right again, this time my body hit against a thick tree and I almost yelped out in surprise and pain as the thick jagged bark scraped against my fur. I heard their footsteps and then I heard more join theirs and I made myself move faster. Looking side to side, I couldn’t find anywhere that I thought it would be safe until I spotted a trail further ahead. I saw it lead down a few steps and as I got near it, I heard water. Not rain water but actual water as if a stream or river was near.
“f**k! It’s too far” A deep voice shouted
“That fast, it’s gotta be a shifter!” another shouted
“s**t! What’s that?” the first voice said again
I ran faster even as my paws started hurting from the stones and pebbles on the ground. Forget running down the stairs! I leaped, my back legs leaving the ground as I floated for a few seconds, my body stretching as my front two legs prepared to land on the ground and run….only…
“NOW!” the other voice shouted
Bang! Pain!
The bullet hit my right hind and I whimpered as my flawless jump now because a crippled mess, my body curling into itself as the bullet entered and I landed in a heap at the bottom of the stairs.
I wanted to curl up and not move but I knew if I did that, I would be dead for sure. I tried to get up, stumbling a couple of times and almost letting out noises of pain. My eyes darted left and right and saw a large rock on the right a little further ahead. I got up, almost yelping out in pain as fire spread up from my hind leg. I moved slowly, my eyes watering from the pain. I didn’t want to die. I had so many important things to do. I couldn’t remember them all but I knew it was important.
“Did you get it?” I heard as the feet drew closer
“I don’t know. I hope so or we are f****d” Another shouted
“Radio into - f**k!” Someone else shouted
I heard shuffling and grunts as the sounds of fighting became loud. I don’t know who was fighting who but their feet stopped coming my way. I heard swearing and a couple of gun shots went off but none near me. I pushed myself up on shaky legs, the burning almost too much, and I limped forward. I was soaked wet from the rain that was still pouring but I knew that the stickiness I felt wasn’t rain.
I limped forward as more shouting and grunts could be heard but I only concentrated on myself, on moving faster.
I was almost near the rock when I heard the change in the sounds. It quietened a little but I still picked up sounds of humans speaking and some swearing. I had just moved my first paw behind the big grey and moss covered rock when I heard the crunching sound of feet rushing not too far behind me
“s**t” Someone said “Who the f**k were they shooting at?”
“I’m not sure” A gruff voice said “Can you smell anything?”
“This rain has just washed away any smells if there were any” The first voice said “f**k!”
I moved down low on the ground, my body and fur not just wet but covered in wet mud. I slowly inched closer behind the rock, my belly rubbing against the mud, my body aching and sore as I started feeling dizzy. As the two spoke, more feet came towards them and started speaking to them as I finally dragged my whole body behind the rock and collapsed, panting as I tried to think of a way to stop the pain
“Something definitely went this way” A voice said “But the rain…the ground is all mud so all traces are gone”
I heard a weird sound and my brain said it was something called a phone. I feel like I should know what that is
“Ok. we’re on the way” That first voice said “Ray’s gone feral! Tim, Sam and Scott need to sedate him”
“f**k!” The other said
“What are you doing?” The first voice asked
“I need to speak to his brother. Let’s get back. The rest of you clean up and bring who’s alive back. We need to interrogate the mother fuckers!” The other one said
“What about what they were shooting at?” someone else asked
“You three comb through here and you two over there. Make sure you work and stick together in case any surprises are out there. Keep me posted. I need to go help him” The other voice said
I heard them all move about, my heart thumping when footsteps started coming towards my way.
Ray. Brother. The words sounded familiar but I don’t know why. I wanted to say I was here, I needed help; but I couldn’t. What if they
were like the others?
I heard a boom and even more rain opened up. I could feel my body burning up even as the wetness from the rain seeped into my fur then my body. I was going to be found for sure. I couldn’t move.
“s**t. that’s the third time i’ve almost slipped” Someone said
“What the f**k is up with this mist?” Another asked
“Should we head back?” Someone else asked
I opened my eyes slowly, my breathing ragged as I saw in surprise that all around me, mist covered everything. It was so thick and I could barely see my front paws. Suddenly, I felt a soft hand on top of my head and I blinked when her face came forward
“It’s ok my child” Her soft voice said “I’m here”
I whined, the sound low and mournful
“It’s getting worse. Can’t see for s**t!” One of them shouted
“Turn around. This mist ain’t normal. Who knows what the f**k is going on but it may be a trap. Let’s get back” Someone else shouted, fear in his voice
“I can’t reach anyone. f**k this s**t. This ain’t normal” Someone else said loudly
The footsteps that had been coming towards me stopped before they started moving away from me.I heard them go in the opposite direction and I let my head fall back down onto my paws, my eyes heavy as I looked at her, her golden hair shining so brightly in front of me.
“It’s going to be alright Fina” She said
How did she know my name? Did she know who I was?
“Yes little wolf, I do” She said
I almost let out a yelp in fright. She heard my thoughts. How? She chuckled at me and I felt warmth flood inside my body as it relaxed and then with a twirl of her fingers, the wind blew harder and I felt my body lift off the ground. I wanted to tell her to stop but the pain from my wound became too much and all I could do was watch as she did whatever she wanted. My nose was almost level with her shining face and she kissed the tip of my wet nose, causing me to close my eyes as I felt a sense of calm enter me
“Now, isn’t this better?” She said
I opened my eyes and let out a yelp
We weren’t in the forest anymore. Well, at least not the one we were in before. This place was magical! I looked up and there was a night sky full of stars and yet, there was a beam of sunlight directly on us. It was dry and a gentle, cooling breeze was playing on my fur. I could smell honeysuckle and lavender and saw various flowers scattered around the lush, green grass and yet….there were flowers I have never seen or smelled before.
I felt the ground rumble a little and saw the trees sway as if alive and I closed my eyes again, sure I was dreaming. When she touched the top of my head again, I opened my eyes and whimpered as she walked away from me; my now floating body following behind her. She must have only taken a few steps before she waved her hand and in front of my eyes, a large brown wooden hut appeared.
“I welcome you, Fina of the Rosvelt Pack, into the realm” She said
My floating body followed her as my eyes tried to take in all the details. I felt myself slowly flat down until I lay on a wooden table and she came closer to me. She placed her right hand lightly over my bleeding wound and started to chant. I closed my eyes once again and
let out a small bark as the pain escalated for a second before disappearing altogether.
“Bring me the blue star” She said
I opened my eyes and saw a white raven! But…how could that be? Ravens were black. And this one….this one had nine curling tails at its back, long and fine, almost like glass when it shone in the sunlight. I watched the bird chirp before flapping its long white feathers twice and disappear in a flash of a bright light.
“There now, see. It’s done Fina” She said
She pointed to my hind leg and I looked down, letting out a yelp of happiness when I saw no blood. I moved my legs cautiously; waiting for pain to come but it moved without any hindrance.
With a loud squawk, the white raven came back into the room with a flash and in its mouth, It carried a long, soft looking blue feather and dropped it into her open palm.
“Thank you” She said softly
Turning back to me, as she chanted something in a foreign language; the feather immediately froze as frost slowly went from the stalk right up to the tip, the sound of ice loud in the room. I watched in fascination as she crushed the feather and when she opened her hands, it looked like blue glitter in her hand. Like little stars shining brightly. She then sprinkled it all over my wound even though it wasn’t bleeding any more.
I stiffened in surprise as I felt the ice in the feather go into the wound and spread into my body. I felt coolness enter and push away the burning fever that I had started to feel creep up when the bullet had logged into my body. With shock I saw the wound close up slowly, as it was healing itself internally, I felt myself become drowsy, my eyes blurring as black dots started to dance in front of my eyes
“It’s ok Fina. You’re safe. You don’t know how important you are, little wolf. How your escape was written long before and will start off a chain of events that was long overdue. Rest now Fina and we will talk tomorrow”
I immediately started to fall asleep. I heard her hum as she placed a soft blanket over me, the coolness from that star keeping me from burning up as my body healed from its injury. I heard her speak but couldn’t make out the words as I felt sleep over take me as the smell of warmth and fragrant flowers teased my nose.
-----------------------------------------------------
I don’t know why, but suddenly, my brain felt like it turned on.
Like a switch went off in my mind and my eyes shot open. I was sure that what I had witnessed had been a dream and I was shocked when I saw the same wooden hut and the white raven with its many tails, sitting perched on the back of a chair
“Ah, good. You are awake” She said
Who are you? I asked her
“The more important question is…who are you?” She asked
Her robes had changed. When I saw her before, they were golden. Now they were white. They floated down as if it was a waterfall,
the material a living, breathing entity as it moved with her. Only one full arm was visible while the other had white material draped over it in loops before it stopped at his wrist. Then the material seemed to gather like individual strands and around each finger, leaving them exposed except the base on the finger where the material was wrapped around like a band. Her golden hair was tied up in a knot on her head and the rest spilled down in curls. Wow!
“So, do you?” She asked me
I titled my head at her, forgetting the question
“Do you know who you are?” She asked again
I thought about it. I concentrated really hard but I couldn’t remember. I couldn’t see past my wolven body.
“You will” She said “You will remember. And when you do, you will shine my little wolf”
Where am I? I asked
“A place that few others can go. Fina listen to me, I am going to send you back now and you are going to meet someone special for
you. He is going to help you” She said as she gently patted my head
Can you fix me? I asked her
“I could, my darling, but I need you to fix yourself because it is very important. You are not a divine being like me. There is a human part to you that needs to heal and by going on this journey, the healing will be better, complete and will come with many rewards” She said
She scratched behind my ears and I panted, loving the peace her touch brought me. I whined in pleasure as her scent embedded itself into my nose.
“Another thing Fina, It will take your human side a while to emerge. When it does, you will meet two very special children who will also be there to help you” She said
Can I trust them? I asked her
“Yes. You can. One of them will call you by a name you will remember me by. There is a great battle coming and soon you will all need to pick your sides. Good versus evil isn’t just a saying. The balance of the battle has shifted because those who should not have…have gotten involved” She said
She then took the blanket off me and with her hand gesture, asked me to stand up. I stood up and then stretched, first my back and then my front legs. I looked at my hind legs where I had been shot and not a mark was there. I looked at her, smiling as my tongue rolled out
“Feeling better huh?” She chuckled “It’s time I took you back. He is already at his wits end and I have forced his body to come here”
Who’s he? Is he coming here? To this hut? I questioned
“No little wolf. No-one can enter here unless they are of divine nature, Have the blessing of either the Three or have the permission of the one true king” She said “He is for you Fina. He will find you and care for you. Let him love you little wolf and don’t be scared to accept him”
Will I see you again? I asked her
“Oh yes. You all will. But….not in the way you think but the moon goddess Ophelia will guide you as is my word” She tells me “You must take them back to the others. We must try to save as many as we can before they are turned to the wrong way. Your courage will
guide you and I will also be by your side” She said
She then kissed my nose and I closed my eyes as I felt the love in her touch that made tears well up and spill. When I opened them again, she moved away from me and I watched her wave her hand as a light blanket fell on top of my body. I looked around and realised that I was back where I had been before, the forest now dry
“It’s already been two days since you were shot. Time is different in our realm. We are all here for you Fina. He will be along tomorrow morning and when he arrives, know that he is for you” She said
She waved at the ground and before my eyes, a bowl of water and meats appeared. I looked at her with questions and she answered with a smile
“I can’t change you back because your human side doesn’t want to emerge. I need her to trust again and she can only do that with him. This is to sustain you until he find you. Sleep, you are safe behind this rock. You will know when he is near” She touched my head again before moving back
Wait! What do I call you? I ask in a panic
“To those that know us, I am known as mother….but you may call me Auriga” She smiled “Trust and faith Fina….They need you…they all need you” She smiled
With a golden light, she disappeared; the only trace of her left was the sweet smelling flowers which gave comfort to my soul and lifted my spirit as I lay down to await my fate
