Sue (2) I felt the cold beneath me and shivered. s**t, was I punished again for not listening to them and they didn’t give me a blanket for the night? I tried to open my eyes but I was so tired that even shifting an inch sent sparks of pain shooting through me.I flexed my hands and froze when I felt dirt beneath my hand…no.....not hands…paws! I had paws! That shock alone made my eyes fly open and I was greeted by darkness. I sneezed and particles of dust flew up in the air. Suddenly, everything came back to me in a rush! The drugs, Josh pretending to be on their side. The plan. Oh goddess, the plan! I can’t believe, after all this time, I even got this far! I actually made it into the hole! I just never expected my wolf to show up after all these years of silence! I looked down at my paws, my wolf eyes now adjusted to the darkness, my vision clear as I took in the soil beneath my feet. How long had I been out? I strained my ears but couldn’t hear anything. I wasn’t sure if that was because the tunnel was solid and sound couldn’t get in or because they weren’t outside. I tried to speak to my wolf, trying to communicate, but nothing. Silence. Did I lose her already? I panicked, my heart beating loudly in the silent tunnel. I tried to remember to focus, trying to remember how to breathe and calm myself. It took me a long few moments to calm down and start putting my thoughts together. One, I was still in my wolf form. Two, this tunnel was only big enough for my wolf form, but hunched down. I couldn’t stand up straight. Three, I had to move, even if I couldn’t feel my wolf spirit inside of me. I had to get to the end of this tunnel and try to escape. I had to find help. I moved forward, my nose sniffing the way as I slowly crawled the tunnel. I kept myself low to the ground as much as possible so I could feel the soil, the earth. It wasn’t a smooth tunnel. There were rocks that were either hidden or upturned. Every so often, a root or vines would brush against my fur and hit my face. I don’t know how long I shuffled along for, but after a while, my stomach started to growl. I started feeling the need for the medication that the doctors would shove down my throat and I almost turned back. I actually paused and thought about how I could do with some water and my body told me that it needed those green pills so I could sleep properly. I needed the white one as it would relax my body. But I shook my head. I know it wasn’t me. These were the pills talking that they had made me become addicted to. It took a great effort for me to convince my mind I didn’t need them. That I would ruin everything we all worked hard to do if I went back now. After promising myself I would eat as soon as I got out, if I didn’t go back, I kept moving forward. I don’t know how long it took, only that this tunnel seemed to go on for ages! I shuffled and shuffled, a cramp now throbbing on my back leg and my shoulders now twinging from the constant position of being hunched over. The further along I got, the colder it seemed to get. I could feel the air get fuller and, for the first time, I felt wind! I felt a draft ruffle my fur and a delicious feeling of life shook my body. And yet the tunnel didn’t end there. On and on I went and I almost felt the will to live leave me when my paw hit more stones and rocks. Suddenly, up ahead, the ground opened up a little. Walking cautiously, I placed my paws forward one step at a time until I was able to stand up full to my height! My head brushed up against the soil above but at least I could stand! I walked forward and after a few more steps, the tunnel had an incline to go up. It was still dark and I couldn’t see anything ahead; so I went slowly. My throat was parched and my stomach rumbled as if a motorbike was revving its engine inside of me. As I got further and further up the incline, I came upon a solid round door. s**t, what did Josh say again? Something about a round button. I racked my brain, trying to remember, sad that my wolf spirit still hadn’t voiced anything. It took me a while but I recalled something about sniffing near the door for metal. I put my nose to the ground and started to sniff. I started from the left and worked down to the right before my nose caught the scent of something other than dirt and soil. The tang of metal made my nose tickle and I sneezed, throwing soil away from where my nose detected the button and I saw the round dirt-covered grey circle. I quickly used my paws to move the soil away from it and bobbed the button. After trying a couple of times, the button worked and I finally saw the solid door start to move. I held my breath, terrified that it was a trick. That I would be caught once again. I eased up beside the door cautiously even as a gust of wind hit my face. It was still dark. I eased out of the hole and stood up tall as the confines of the tunnel finally was away and I could breathe easily. Free! I was free! It worked! Goddess, it really worked! It felt amazing to finally be able to stand without hunching down. To feel air in my lungs and the wind on my fur. I looked around and once again my eyes adjusted to my surroundings. I was near some sort of…forest? I took a sniff, but it didn’t seem familiar. I took small steps, trying to adjust to everything around me. The moon was low and its light made the forest more haunting. I could hear the sounds of various insects and animals as they moved around, the sounds of the leaves moving in the breeze as the smells hit me at once. My tongue rolled out from the side of my mouth as I felt even more alive again. I stopped suddenly as my eyes moved over the two rather large rabbits further ahead. My stomach protested its fasting and my mouth salivated. I didn’t even know I had moved until I had one of the rabbits in my mouth, my eyes glazing over in euphoria as I devoured it, my stomach doing a happy dance as it finally got some nurishment. I saw a squire and this time I felt myself move and once again, I chased the small animal and caught it before it managed to reach a tree. Damn, I was fast! Either that or I was so hungry that speed became my friend. Chasing the squirrel had taken me to a part of the forest that must have water near because I could smell it. I followed my nose and even though I came across two more rabbits; I didn't feel the need to chase them. I was full. I walked on for a few minutes when my ears picked up the sound of water. I ran towards it and almost yelped in happiness. The fresh, clear water flowing down the rocks beckoned me and without any hesitation, I ran into it; jumping into the cold water. I felt the blood wash away from dinner as well as all the dirt and grit which had gotten into my fur. After a few minutes, I came out, shaking the remaining water off and trotted to a nearby tree. I yawned, the stress and toll of the last few hours finally catching up with me. I just needed a few minutes. Just some rest before I tried to find some help. Tears gathered in my eyes when I thought about the others and I wished I had more energy to move. But I couldn’t. My body curled up, my back against the big tree as my head rested on my front paws. My eyes caught the look of my back leg and I looked at it in surprise. My white hospital tag was still around my right leg. How did I miss that all this time? I guess that’s how distracted I was. Sue Mulligan 100781 Level D KIA Kill If activated. That's what it meant. Activated - If I shifted. I was expendable. I whimper, feeling so alone out here. I may be free, but I have no one. At least inside, we were still together even if we were apart. We felt each other’s energy. I couldn’t even approach Josh if I wanted to. That was our agreement. I knew I had to get back to that door because of the agreement with Josh, but I was so tired. Belly full and now clean, my eyes drifted shut as I fell asleep….free for the first time in ten years. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “You may have thought this plan has worked, but let me tell you that it hasn’t. Sue has been captured and if you thought we wouldn’t have found out the plan….you are wrong. So it would be in your best interest to tell me who else was involved” Dr Lance Lombard said as he stared at them Cages filled with people lined the back wall as guards with guns stood still, their weapons pointed at the prisoners. Dr Lombard walked up to the first cage and looked through the bars as he turned the key in the locked door. “Do you need a reminder on what happens when I unlock this door?” Lance said with menace. “We don’t know anything” The large man inside the cage said “How could we? You keep us apart in different rooms. This is the first time in months that we have seen each other again” “Don’t get fuckin smart!” Chris said, stepping forward. Dr Lombard put his hand up to stop Chris. He smirked at the big man in front of him and picked up a syringe from the table beside the cage “So that must mean we have a traitor among us. She didn’t get away on her own” Lance said, looking at Chris Staying silent, the rest of the shifters stood still. Lance walked towards the silent female in the cage three doors away from the man. Opening the door, he and three other guards walked into her cage “Who is helping you?” Lance asked “We don’t know what you are talking about” She said quietly, “over ten years and you think now is when we suddenly came up with a plan that would work? All of the guards come in groups and don’t talk to us. How could we have known anything?” “And you don’t think I know about mind-link hhmm?” Lance smirked “Like I’ve told you before. That only works when you are one pack. We aren’t” She explained “Raine, Raine, Raine” Lance tisked “I know a pack can be made of different people from different groups” Lance said in a deadly voice “A pack needs to be initiated. It needs to be formed and than have an alpha” Raine explained “You already know that” “I do” Lance said nodding his head . He moved closer to her as the guards walked up behind him. They stopped, their guns still pointing at her. “Where is she Raine?” Lance asked. When she didn’t reply, he punched her in the face hard enough to turn her head. The other shifters roared and called out, their anger a living entity in the room. Raine turned her face back to him slowly, spitting out the blood in her mouth. “She doesn’t know anything!” The large man in the cage roared “You want to be a big man? Pick on someone your own size asshole” Lance laughed before stepping away from Raine and walking out of the cage. The guards eased back while keeping their weapon on her until they were outside. Lance locked the cage door, the syringe still in hand as he held it up for all to see “This” Lance shouted “is something quite remarkable. This here; once injected, renders the person immobile. The liquid works into the bloodstream and makes that person not just speak the truth like a child but also, creates a rash on top of the skin to let someone know if that person is a shifter or not before weakening their ability to fight. Imagine if this baby got out…made into a powder that they can use with gloves…how many possibilities there would be” Raine stiffened before trying to relax her muscles. Her eyes followed Lance’s movements even as her brain tried to grasp the information. Lance clicked his fingers and most of the guards left the room except three, including Chris. “Could make for a great date rape drug. Or even for those that have a sick need to try a shifter” Lance said slowly before chuckling to himself “Imagine…the death of hundreds…the rape and torture of hundreds….all on your conscious oh mighty alpha” “We told you before”. The large man shouted “We don’t know anything!” Lance turned around and walked with the rest of the guards to the door. As the guards left, he turned around and looked at all the shifters before looking at the man “I wasn’t talking to you, that was for your alpha” Lance said with a smirk “I have no alpha. I am my own alpha jerkwad” The man growled Lance snapped his fingers towards Raine’s cage, he smirked, his right side of the lip moving up as he looked her straight in eyes “Alpha” Lance said, before turning around and walking out, locking the door behind him “s**t! How does he know?” the small female whispered. “He can’t know” another younger female said “He’s trying to guess” “Sure seemed like he knew to me” Another man said quietly “f**k!” The large man said “what do we do?” “We bind our time” Raine said, sitting back down on the bedroll “Sue will come through” “Wh..what if it’s a trap? What if Josh is in on it and the reason why he is helping us is just a lie?” A scared little voice asked “We have to have trust..faith” Raine said as she wiped her mouth “Josh said he heard them talk about the old pack and about a pack called the Black Moon. Sue knows what to do” “And then?” The quiet female asked “And then we fight and kill these motherfuckers before they destroy anymore packs” Raine said, her eyes glued to the door that Dr Lombard had walked out of.
