THE LANGUAGE OF THE GOD'S

1120 Words
Jupiter put on the headphones in her ears and tried to immerse herself in an R&B song. Since childhood, she has found out that she relied so much on music to anchor her to the present-day world. Being a loner, music is her only friend and gateway to happiness, especially now that she has no man in her life. The day seemed bright as the cloudy morning had turned sunny, and for a while, she did away with her cardigan and closed her eyes as the early morning sun grazed on her soft skin. Lost in her world, she was surprised when the car suddenly stopped in front of a large chapel, and this made her open her eyes, peek through the window, and gaze at her environment, noticing a tall tower. She removed the headphones and stuffed them back in her purse. Once out of the car, she was captivated by the awesome environment, and then Roland led them along precipitous steps, then through a passage that seemed to be dug like a tunnel, down to the valley where the compound itself was nestled, and then into an ancient monastery. "Welcome to the home of the werewolf rune. This altar was built in a Neolithic structure and served as a place of prayer to whatever gods the monks believed in. As you can see that circle over there, it was believed to relate to the position of the sun, and perhaps, the location of some planets." Roland's eyes were glistening as he inhaled louder and increased his pitch, "maybe the circles had been used as an astronomical gauge or sorts, their alignment with the stars will allow the stone-Age inhabitants to determine the beginning and the end of the growing season." "What about the runes?" A voice asked from the back. "According to the myth, this jargon written over there was written by the last invading pack of werewolves, and it is today referred to as the werewolf rune." All eyes turned towards the place pointed by Roland. It was in the upper section of the chapel and looked like a kind of altar on its own. Something immediately pulled Jupiter forward, and, to her surprise, she moved along with whatever it was. A few steps away, the gathering of the people before her finally parted to reveal the flat altar. She recognized it immediately! It was the same altar she had come to know so intimately in her recurrent dream. But this can't be a dream. She is very awake and there is no doubt that this is occurring. At that moment, she tried to scream, to pull her arm free of whoever was dragging her to the center of the altar. A lady who had introduced herself to Jupiter during the flight yesterday as Helen, asked. "Did you think this alphabetical jargon has a meaning?" "I'm not an expert but a guide," Roland answered back. He pointed at Jupiter and said, "Over there is Miss. Jupiter is an expert on things like this and should be able to answer any of your questions." Even though she wasn't expecting to be the center of attraction, Jupiter can't help but do what she loves doing most. As far as this was concerned, she would never be caught unaware. "Is it true what he said? Are you some sort of expert on the werewolves?" A man who had earlier introduced himself to Andrew asked. Jupiter's cheek warmed as she answered honestly, "I guess so. I've studied them for nearly a decade, and for what that's worth." "Did you think it was written by the last invading pack of werewolves?" His companion, who goes by the name Angela, asked. "It was a language unknown to humans. Even though it looks like the language spoken by the ancient Vikings, I can assure you that Vikings will be as lost as you and I when asked to tell us what it means. And yes, it was the language spoken by the werewolves. Several questions were hurled at her from the multitude of fun-seekers who had either come to verify the genuineness of the rune or to seek an answer to their questions. They all want to know how authentic this is. And like she always does, she answered them to the utmost of her knowledge. "Fact or fiction depends on the available evidence," Jupiter mumbled and added, "and then it depends on the state of our mindset. No matter the evidence on the ground, someone who doesn't want to believe will remain an unbeliever." The group nodded in agreement, and their silence gave Jupiter the chance to resume her speech, "First and foremost, history lets us know that the werewolves always raid this place because of the availability of lots of silver, which is a valuable weapon to them. None of us can dispute this as we still have tons of mines around here." "Tell me, Miss. Jupiter," Helen raised her brows and asked, "From your perspective, did you think this rune can bring back the werewolves from wherever they are?" Jupiter had a diplomatic smile, that was what she was asked to do to earn her professorship. Prove the werewolf is real and we will give you what you want. "Yes. And I think I can decipher the meaning of it." She could feel a chill running through the group as she said this. She ignored their unbelievable gaze and stood over the rune. The words were exactly the way they had first come to her in a dream. Roland placed his palms over where his heart was located, "As God is my maker, I would like you to give it a try. And maybe... Just maybe if they bring the werewolves here, then I will believe them." Jupiter heard Roland's voice behind her as her eyes fixed on the runes and read out loud, "THE VEIL WILL OPEN WHEN MORTAL HAS THE TONGUE OF THE GODS." Roland, who had been silently gazing at Jupiter, asked, "What did it mean to have the tongue of the Gods?" "It probably means hearing the language of the gods. Don't forget, to speak in tongues means to speak in a strange language." "Well, you just read it out, didn't you? And I don't see anything happening. I think that settles the argument," Roland said with an impatient look. "I think we should visit the monastery cemetery close by. Of course, if we can stand the chills that are always present in places like this." The group stepped after Roland exited the altar, and then walked rapidly toward the cemetery a miles away. None of them were aware of Jupiter who stood rooted in a spot.
