The promise.
"Wow" was the only word that occurred to me as I saw the view in front of me. It was the most gorgeous sight I had ever seen in my life. We were standing in front of a beautiful pond surrounded by trees. I was surprised when Xavier said he wanted to show me something. We had to walk a bit longer to get here, but it was definitely worth it since I got to view this beautiful place. This property is much bigger than I anticipated.
"Did you like it?" With a little grin on my face. I agreed by nodding.
"I actually like it, thank you for bringing me here," his lips form a straight line before he nods. I think he doesn’t smile much. With a shrug, I began strolling towards the well-kept small garden and began scrutinizing various types of flowers that I had never seen before. As long as I was there, I was admiring every single thing, he didn’t move from his place. He stood in a particular spot, his hands tucked into his pockets, making him appear more frightening. When he noticed me gazing at him, I hurriedly shifted my gaze. I blushed bright red after being caught looking at him before sitting on the pond's edge with my feet in the water. I noticed he had a message on his phone before he received the call. I raised an eyebrow as he began whispering while sometimes staring at me. I didn't say anything and instead began toying with my fingers, frightened, and perplexed by his glances. I was deep in concentration when I heard someone clear their throat, and that someone was none other than Xavier himself.
"Yes," I responded, glancing at him.
"Let's go, I want to show you something," he said without waiting for my response and began heading back the way we came. I sprang to my feet and began walking after him. It took us 5 minutes to go back to where we started, and when we got there, my jaw dropped, and a faint smile formed on my lips. I sprint towards the newly built swing.
"Thank you," I exhale, but he merely nodded and walked away, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
My main question is why he is acting as though he cares when we are strangers. With that in mind, I spent my day on the swing, thinking about a certain person who has been on my mind since we met.
Later in the evening, around dinner time. I didn't see Xavier since he had some important work to do and was going to be late, so he told all the maids to look after me. I was eating dinner when I heard yelling and then something shattering from the other side. I frowned in uncertainty and was about to get up when one of the maids approached me with a concerned face.
"Mam, you should finish your dinner before it gets cold," she added in one breath, perplexing me, but nonetheless I did what she told to me. When I heard a gunshot, I froze. I turn to face the direction from which I heard the gunfire. It brought back memories of that night when he pointed a gun at my head. Suddenly I started feeling cold and I shiver in fear. The first thought in my mind was them. What if they returned to take me with them? What if no one, not even Xavier, can help me this time? What if they decide to kill me?
"Mam, are you alright?" one of the maids expressed. I couldn't blame her for asking because recalling them made me pale.
"Y...yes...I...I...I am...fine" I closed my eyes for a minute before opening them again.
"I'm...going to my room," she nodded nervously. I struggled to my temporary room on my unsteady legs. Before I laid down on my bed, I double-checked that the windows and doors were secured, and sleep quickly overtook me.
..................
"We'll have a great time breaking you," I shook my head, but couldn't say anything because my mouth was gagged, making it impossible for me to scream for help. The only thing on my mind was "Please leave me," but my request was worthless since I knew they would never leave me, at least not now, and I didn't have anybody who could save me from these monsters, but there was still hope that one day I would be out of this prison.
"Are you going to cooperate with us?" I shook my head knowing very well about what is going to happen next for denying them. He merely smirked and aimed his gun towards my forehead, making me tremble.
"And now," he said with a mock on his face. I couldn't even shake my head from fear of what they might do if they didn't like my response. The gagged was suddenly withdrawn from my lips, and I wasted no time in screaming at the top of my lungs for help, but no one came to save me from these monsters.
"You b***h," he slapped and hit me, and the impact was so powerful that I nearly blacked out.
"Please leave me," I begged, but they merely laughed at my pitiful pleadings.
"Corazoncito, wake up. It's just a nightmare." I opened my eyes when I heard his reassuring words, and as soon as they rested on his handsome face, I moved away from him as he burnt me.
"Don't touch me," I say quietly. I saw the agony in his eyes, but it was probably an illusion.
"Corazoncito, no one is going to hurt you," he said, and I didn't trust him since I knew no one could protect me from those monsters.
"No, don't make promises you can't keep," I say quietly, but I know he heard me.
"Corazoncito," I shook my head as I noticed him approaching me. I hugged myself in the corner of the bed.
"Please just leave," I said, but he ignored me and began approaching me.
"I will heal you" I scooted far away from him when I heard his promising words.
"No, don't touch me" I avoided his grey eyes that begged me to trust him, but I couldn't after what I had gone through. I know he'll be gone when I will need him. He couldn't be beside me to keep those monsters away. He's just lying like my father.
"Please"
"No" Avoiding my protest he hugged me making me stunned with his action.
"I promise I will heal you," he said again, which perplexed me because of his behaviour towards me. I'm not sure why, but I hugged him back, maybe because I was looking for comfort from someone and he is the only one who is here with me. And just like that, tears began to pour from my eyes, quickly turning into a sob. I sobbed because I could sense the pain of what I had gone through. He hugged me tightly and stroked my hair, but he didn't tell me to stop crying because he knows I need this and I know I need this. He is now the only shoulder I have.
"I am here for you, and I promise to protect you from any harm that comes your way," he said, and I believed him this time because I could hear the promise in his voice. No one, not even my father, made me believe this. Before Xavier, I had only my friend Kate who used to looked after me and now I feel grateful for Xavier to be here with me. My sob subsides after a few minutes. I force myself away from him, leaving all the comfort and warmth behind.
"I'm sorry, I ruined your suit," I said, gazing down at my lap.
"Don’t worry" he said and I can feel the gaze on me making me nervous when I remember something.
"How did you enter this room, if I am right, I locked the door and window" he looked straight into my eyes before lifting the set of keys in his hands.
"This is my house woman, so I'm used to having the keys to my own house," I blushed and glanced down. Why did I have to ask that and make myself appear foolish?
"Oh!" was the only thing that escaped my lips. We sat in quiet, without saying anything, until my sight was drawn to the clock, which reads 3 A.M. I frowned as I examined him in his formal suit.
"Did you just get home from work?" He was taken aback by my query, but he nodded.
"Yes" I don't know what to say, and I believe he felt the same way.
"Get some rest. If you need anything, just come to me, okay," I nodded. He returned his nod and rose from his bed.
"Goodnight," I said to him. He nodded and exited, leaving me alone in this big room. I groaned and sat on the bed, but sleep was nowhere to be found making me wide awake.
