SCARLETT The lights flickered once then the entire Laurent estate plunged into darkness. I froze in the hallway, laundry basket in my arms. “Stay where you are,” Simon's voice cut through the dark from the study down the hall. I didn't move, my heart was already racing from the blackout, from being alone in a house with him again. Simon approached, holding a flashlight. He stood there in a dark shirt, sleeves rolled up, jaw tight. He looked more dangerous in the dark. “Power's out,” he said unnecessarily. “The generator will kick in, but it'll take a minute.” I nodded, my throat was dry. “Mom?” “Still at her event in town,” Simon replied. “The driver says roads are tight with traffic.
