CHAPTER VT HE bargain between Noel and Leslie was duly ratified. Leslie worked for a couple of hours in the morning and very often again between tea and dinner. Her aunt fed her on milk and eggs from the home farm, her own restless mind was eased by a feeling that she was not entirely useless, and between the two she got a little fatter, slept better and was more content in mind. Lydia looked on benevolently, and apart from her general inclination to want to do any piece of work that she met, was delighted that Noel should have such a good secretary, for she herself had been splendidly resistant to education as practised at the Barchester High School under Miss Pettinger and had not the art of reading through a book with her eyes only and letting her subconscious mind pounce on the facts
