VIOLET’s POV
I watched as Adrian got into the driver’s seat without sparing me a second glance. Starting the engine, he drove away onto the highway. I felt my knees weaken.
Dragging my feet which now felt like rocks along the ground, I made my way to my car, clenching onto the keys in one hand and holding my head with the other at the terrible headache that was creeping in.
Getting into my car, I rested my head on the steering wheel and burst out in tears, my shoulders heaving up and down nonstop. I drove back home with a heavy heart.
With swollen eyes and a broken heart, I parked the car in the garage when I arrived and got out of the car, holding my heels in one hand. Once I opened the door to our bedroom, I collapsed on the bed, pulling the mattress over my head and crying my eyes out.
I heard the door of our bedroom open a little after midnight. Reaching out for the switch, I flicked the lights on, staring at him with a pair of eyes that were swollen-red from crying all night and crossed arms.
“I can’t believe you’d do such a thing. How could you Adrian?” I glared at him, grinding my teeth in rage.
“You saw what you saw, Violet. I don't believe you've suddenly gone daft.” He undid his buttons in front of the mirror without the slightest hint of regret or an incoming apology.
My voice cracked. “You don’t mean that. She’s not who I think she is, is she? How dare you betray our love like this?” I yelled, getting on my feet.
“What love?” He scoffed, a mocking jeer. “You want the truth?” He tore his eyes from the mirror and pinned them down on me. “I never loved you, Violet!” He broke the ice in a cruel tone.
I slowly shook my head side to side. “No.” My voice was a broken whisper. “You did. I could feel it.”
Rubbing a hand over his face, he stared at the ceiling, chuckling. “goddamn it, Violet! I want no part in this cursed arranged union, don’t you get it?” He barked, causing me to flinch. “I was living my life just fine until you f*****g came alone and ruined my plans with the one I actually loved. I was supposed to end up with Sophia but you just had to exist, didn’t you?”
“The boy….” I gulped down the lump in my throat. “…..is he your son?”
He gave no response but that was more than enough for me to know the answer.
“No. We can fix this.” I reached out to hold his hand but he snatched his arm away like I was a venomous snake. “I love you, Adrian. I really do.”
“Screw this!” He cussed, having just about enough of my pathetic self. He grabbed his cell and stormed out of the room.
Seeing the mood he was in, I ran after him, pleading in tears. Down the stairs and out the mansion gates I kept begging but he bluntly ignored me.
“Adrian please, hear me out.” I cried.
We were on the main road now and no sooner the yellow glow of a cab’s headlights lit his figure just ahead. He waved it down with a flick of his wrist, like I was nothing but wind behind him.
“Drive.” He said to the driver just before rolling the window shut.
“Wait, don’t go please.” I banged desperately on the window but his face remained hard as stone as the cab drove off. I surged forward trying to go after him but I almost ran into an incoming vehicle.
The bright headlights were blinding and the shock caused me to lose my footing. I slipped, falling face down on my stomach. A sharp pain in my abdomen exploded across my body, sharp and hot.
The car had screeched to a halt just in time, narrowly avoiding hitting me. Immediately, I could hear the door open and slam close. Footsteps approached me. Slow and heavy against the ground. Though my eyes were blurry, I tried to focus.
The male silhouette towered above me. He was broad-shouldered in a jet-black overcoat that danced with the night’s breeze. The hem brushed against his expensive Italian shoes, glistening in the lights. His gloved fingers flexed at his side and when he crouched down to examine me—Oh, God, he moved just like a predator, graceful yet lethal.
His face remained veiled in the shadow but I could only see the scar that cut straight on the left side of his lips. I tried to speak but I was unable to. My body ached and everything was spinning and blurry.
All of a sudden, I could feel his strong arms around my frame as I drifted into the subconscious and passed out.
