Chapter 10Sheriff Hawkins was wondering about the Wilkes woman as he lay there, under the stars. He just hoped those three desperadoes were at least showing the poor woman a modicum of respect in their treatment of her; although somehow he feared that this might not be the case. He glanced over at the woman's husband, John Wilkes, and saw that he was awake, too. 'Can't sleep, either, Sheriff?' Wilkes said. 'Just woke up,' Hawkins lied.
