Chapter 11John Wilkes buried the bodies of his two travelling companions and said a prayer for them. He prayed to God to give him strength and the good fortune to find the three desperadoes, so that he could spring Lucy from their clutches and take her home with him. This was the only thought in his mind now. He boiled up some water in a pan over the open fire, and made himself coffee, which he drank from a tin cup. He helped himself to some bread from the provisions they'd brought with them, and broke the bread up into bits and dropped it into the coffee; then he ate it with a spoon.
