Chapter 3They followed the trail of the three desperadoes for the rest of the day and didn't stop until after sundown. Sheriff Hawkins had been all for keeping going, but Harvey Boyle reckoned they'd just as likely lose their way in the dark. They made a fire and cooked some of the steaks they'd brought with them. The steaks tasted good and they opened a bottle of whiskey afterwards. It soon got cold, and they were grateful for the fire that warmed them as they slept that night. They rose early the following morning and set off once more. They crossed a large plain, with nothing but patches of scrub and cactus plants and rocky boulders, then they came to a dry gulch.
