SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Avery and Kai ran through the winding alleys behind the Lancaster estate. Rain slicked cobblestones reflected neon lights from the city beyond, painting their escape in strokes of gold and blue. Where are you taking me? Avery gasped, struggling to keep pace. Kai didn’t answer. His eyes scanned every rooftop, every doorway, every shadow. They ducked into a narrow courtyard. Kai pressed her against a wall, signaling silence. Footsteps approached this time, not just guards. Someone heavier. Someone familiar. Avery’s heart froze. Your brother, Kai whispered. He’s here. Damon stepped into the light, gun raised, expression unreadable. Avery… come back. You don’t understand what you’re doing. I understand perfectly, Avery said, voice shaking but firm. I choose to know the truth. Kai stepped forward, placing himself between Avery and Damon. She’s not yours to take. Damon’s finger twitched on the trigger, hesitation in his eyes. Kai… if you don’t hand her over Before he could finish, a flash of movement Kai lunged, disarming Damon with impossible precision. Avery gasped, shocked but strangely exhilarated. Kai held her close, whispering, You’re safe… for now. Avery’s chest heaved, heart racing. Something inside her shifted fear was mingled with exhilaration. He was dangerous… but he wasn’t her enemy. And what about my family? she asked, her voice barely audible. Kai’s jaw tightened. They’re counting on keeping you in the dark. And we both know you can’t trust them entirely. Avery swallowed. She realized in that instant that nothing would ever be the same her family, her company, her life… and her heart.
