CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

1616 Words

RIN I didn't know which was worse—the pain of losing my mom after she filed a DNR, or the shock and heartbreak on the twins’ faces when I told them she was gone. They had looked so hopeful when I walked in, a small smile even creeping onto Ethan’s face when he saw me. For a moment, I almost didn’t want to tell them. But I knew I had to—at least the part that mattered to them. They didn’t need to know that she could’ve still been alive if she had chosen to fight. The awkward silence that followed my words was unbearable. Neither of them said a word—not a sound, not a single tear. They didn’t even run to me for comfort. Nothing. It freaked me out, and for a second, I feared they might have entered a state of shock. Then Nathan finally broke the silence and quietly asked if we could go home.
