Mr Monster

1094 Words
ONE YEAR LATER As she sat in her cramped cubicle, Olivia's eyes drifted out the window. She wasn't seeing the gray concrete of the city though. She was seeing champagne toasts on a yacht, red carpet strut-worthy louboutins. The glam and luxury. A life she had always wanted. Each time she snapped out of her daydreams, it left her broken than the last. Her life now only reminded her of what could have been. She wanted a good life and she was willing to work hard for it, no matter what. Her eyes snapped back to her computer screen, where a spreadsheet glared at her like a boring lecture. She sighed, her shoulders stretched in her too-tight blazer. This wasn't the life she had envisioned for herself. Not by a long shot. Even as a little girl, moving from one foster home to the other, she could see herself living big and large. “I'd like to see your boss” A weary looking man walked into the office and informed Olivia and without getting any permission from her, he walked into the CEO's office. Mr Giovanni Verona, CEO of Verona Enterprises, sat behind his desk tapping on the screen of his macbook pro. His green orbs stayed fixated on his device even as he heard the man walk into his opulent space. “You can't let the bank take what's mine Gio, my wife is knocked up with our third child on the way, don't let them take my f*****g company” The man sobbed pathetically, already on his knees “I don't see how any of that is my business, the board has made their decision” Giovanni spoke leisurely, with no consideration to the man's growing frustration. Unlike other business men, Giovanni understood the rule of give and take in business. You either lose or fail and Giovanni was no loser. The legacy of Verona Enterprises now rested on his shoulders. His father left it to him and he had no plans of letting it sink. Mr Blackwell here had been one to get his hands dirty for money, and now he had fallen right into Giovanni's trap. “Poor Mr Blackwell” Olivia thought. Her cubicle wasn't so far off, so she could catch some words. No one deserved to be at the mercy of Mr Monster, a name she had awarded him since the first day she was made his secretary. He could be such a jerk sometimes, if not always. “Come and get this man out of here” Giovanni spoke brashly into the telephone. He had gotten enough of Mr Blackwell's antics. Few seconds later, some security men marched in. “This is f****d up Giovanni and you know it-” His voice cracked with desperation as he was bundled out like a sack of hay. “Make sure to let the secretary know she is fired” He said to one of the security men. She should never have let the i***t into his office, he thought. Right outside the CEO's office, Olivia's face drained of any color as rage built from her core. Why on earth would he fire her? There had to be a reason. She strode into his office, determined to find out why. “Sir I-” “I suggest you go back outside and knock” He said, cutting her off without sparing her a glance. Mr Giovanni was never a man to joke around. She turned and made an exit. “Come in” He finally answered after a few knocks and she walked in again She looked down to his white shirt, unbuttoned down to his chest. His sleeves were folded up, revealing his strong veiny arms. She quietly scolded herself. She wasn't here for any of that. “You fired me?” She blurted out His hooded eyes now rested on her, glaringly. How dare she even attempt to question him “Miss Lopez, I have no doubt that as my former secretary, you possess excellent English language skills” He said in that deep voice that prompted fear in many, but not her. “Tell me why” She ordered without batting an eyelid. She decided she had gotten enough of his cold and mean attitude. He arched a brow at her and started to talk “Listen-” “No, you listen to me, you wanna be Henry Cavil!” She snapped cutting him short“I'm positive you don't see how any of this is f****d up since you're rich and all, but you don't hire people and just fire them out of the blue, without a reason for that matter! Besides I'm sick of working for a sadist like you so I quit!” Olivia blurted out. By the time she covered her mouth with her hands in shock, it was too late She rushed out of his office, leaving him astonished "I should leave already before he orders my arrest" She said to herself and got to work immediately. Vanessa had come to see for herself. She watched in excitement as Olivia packed her stuff into a box “So it's true, you've been fired?” A smile played on her lipstick smeared lips as she asked “Get out of my face” Olivia rolled her eyes and continued packing still seething with rage from her encounter with the boss Vanessa on the other hand had been nothing but a pain since Olivia stepped foot in the company. Unlike Olivia, Vanessa had her life together or seemed like it. She showed up to work with designer bags and shoes. Her perfectly done make up always stood out, and her wavy shoulder length hair never had a bad hair day. Vanessa also had this sick delusion of ending up with the CEO some day, especially after rumours had gone round that he was now single. Something about Olivia irked Vanessa so much and she never failed to show it. “It was bound to happen anyway. Dirty girls like you don't belong here” Vanessa stated she gestured her hands round the grandeur of the company. Other employees watched the little drama unfold in front of them. They spoke in hushed tones at the tension brewing. Perhaps she was right, Olivia thought. She didn't deserve to be here And with that resolve she chose to ignore the meanie who stood, delighted at her downfall. Olivia walked into the bubbly street of New York with no hope of what was next for her.
