Chapter 9

Ares surged forward as his eyes darkened taking control completely. Fear shot through me and I screamed his name without thinking. “You will not speak to your king in such tone and you will not reject what is bound to you.” His voice came out, rough, ancient, nothing human about it. I stumbled back my heart beating like it wanted to jump out of my chest. “Rhage.” my voice cracked. “Come back......” He didn’t answer. Ares did. He took a slow step toward me, head tilting slightly, eyes watching me like I was something he had already decided was his. The air around him felt thick and heavy. I could smell him, so much heat, want and hunger. The way he moved made my stomach twist. Like a predator and I was his prey. My body reacted before my mind could stop it. Heat pooled between my thighs and a sharp tingle ran through my core. “s**t!”Asha whispered inside my head. I didn’t even see him move. One second I was standing there the next my back slammed against the wall. The impact knocked the breath out of me. His hand came down beside my head, trapping me there then his lips were on mine. It wasn’t gentle, It wasn’t sweet,It was pure hunger. I gasped into the kiss, hands flying up without thinking, gripping his shoulders. His lips moved like he was starving, like he had been holding this back for years and finally lost the fight. My knees nearly gave out, then suddenly he tore away. “No!” Rhage growled staggering back like he’d been burned. His hands went to his head, his fingers digging into his hair breathing hard. “Get back...... I said get back.” He looked wrecked and furious and terrified of himself. I stood there frozen, chest rising too fast, mind blank except for how good it felt...... how wrong it felt...... how much I still wanted it. Asha tried to pull me back, she tried to clear my head but the feeling wouldn’t go. He backed into the corner like a man at war with himself and that’s when I cursed under my breath. Because I moved, I crossed the room in three steps and threw myself into him, mouth finding his again like it was where I belonged. He froze for half a second then he kissed me back, harder, deeper, arms wrapped around me like he was afraid I’d disappear. The fire crackled louder the storm outside howled like it was watching and this time neither of us stopped it. .................................... I woke up slowly. The first thing I noticed was the warmth then the soft snores behind me. I opened my eyes and froze, his huge body was wrapped around mine. one arm tight around my waist, his chest rising and falling against my back. He shifted slightly in his sleep, muscles flexing as he pulled me closer like I might escape if he didn’t hold on. A strange warmth filled my chest. I’ve never felt this safe in my life. My eyes burned a little with so much emotions flooding through me at once and I swallowed it down. Amy...... I can’t lose her. She’s the only person I’ve ever had, the only family I chose and now I’ve crossed a line I can’t pretend didn’t happen. I stared at the wall heart tight but no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t ignore what I felt for her father. So maybe, just maybe, I’ll let myself have this. We still have two days stuck here. I’ll do what I want, I’ll feel what I feel, and when this storm ends, I’ll walk away. That will be the end. Asha stirred softly inside me. “You think you’ll be able to let go?” I stayed quiet for a long time then I sighed. “I have no choice.” .................... The next morning I tried to move my legs and hissed softly. There was a dull sting low in my body and I bit my lip. Last night rushed back to me all at once. Rhage was on me like a beast through the night, and I wasn’t innocent either. My body still felt sensitive, warm and aware of his touch. I felt a soft peck on my lips and opened my eyes. He was already awake, those beautiful hazel eyes were watching me closely, like he was scared I might disappear if he blinked. His long curly hair was messy, packed back in a loose ponytail. The tattoos on his arms caught the soft morning light, dark and bold against his skin. He looked, unreal. I just stared shamelessly and don’t even know how long I stared for. His gaze slowly searched my face, cautious, unsure, and for the first time since I’ve known him, he looked nervous, almost scared, like he didn’t know what to expect from me. My cheeks burned and I quickly hid my face in the pillow. He laughed low and warm and that only made me more shy. Then I felt his lips at my neck again, slow, gentle this time voice dropping as he whispered into my ear. “Did I hurt you?” I shook my head quickly. “No.” But he knew I was lying. I was sore. I could feel it and I knew if this man touched me again, my body would forget every reason I had to stop. “I made breakfast,” he said suddenly. I lifted my head in surprise. There by the small table, were two plates already set warm food, neatly covered causing my heart to flutter hard. How did I even get here? From being cheated on to being cared for, spoiled, desired, by such a powerful man who looked at me like I mattered. And then reality hit. My best friend’s dad. Sadness brushed my chest, but I pushed it aside. Two days. Just two days. I moved closer to him and kissed him slowly, no rush, no fear, just warmth and he kissed me back the same way, like the world outside didn’t exist. For now, it was just us trapped together and I wanted it just as much.
