“My home, Utopia.”
“What?” I yelled as he laughed.
“We’re in Utopia.”
“Isn’t that in another dimension or something,” I said completely freaking out this couldn’t be happening, not to me.
“Yeah, kind of,” he said with a careless shrug.
“How in the world did we drive here?”
“Magic,” was all he said it was really all he needed to say.
“This really can’t be happening, I can’t be here,” I said freaking out. If my mom found out I’d be died.
“Yes you can stop worrying,” he said nonchalantly kissing my hand.
“You don’t understand my mom would kill me if she ever found out,” I said more or less looking like a crazy street person as I fidgeted with my shirt and mumbled to myself.
“So we won’t let her find out,” he said sounding like Lulu or my sister Emerald.
“I have to get Lulu I’m sorry I just can’t stay,” I said looking into his sad eyes they were an endless haze of the most wonderful greenish blue.
“You’re safe I would never let anything happen to you or anyone you care about,” the conviction in his voice as he said that should have been enough. I just couldn’t shake the feeling that he was going to ruin my life. Something deep in me knows no good could come from me trusting him, yet it felt as if I couldn’t trust myself either.
“How do I know I can trust you Trent?” I asked searching his eyes for truth.
“I’ll do whatever it takes to get you to trust me,” he said holding my hand.
“Swear on your mother’s life,” I said holding up my pinky.
He looked down at my hand and said, “That’s drastic,” then he laughed at me, “Are we back on the playground in second grade,” he added with another laugh.
“It’s not funny and you did say anything,” I said smiling at him, “Just do it... please.”
“Anything for you,” he said wrapping his finger around mine. “I swear on my mother’s life that I will never hurt or lie to you, or anyone you love,” he said trying not to laugh.
“Good,” I said smiling back at him.
“Great, let’s eat,” he said guiding me towards the table.
“About time you two came back,” Luna said hitting me, “Would you please stop embarrassing yourself.”
“How come you’re so come,” I asked putting my bags on the back of the chair.
“Because we’re not in any danger I feel safe and kindda at home here,” she said with a shrugged eating a fork full of her curry whatever.
“You are, everyone here is,” Lucas said staring Lulu in her golden eyes. “This is where we all belong away from human fears, jealousy, and judgments.”
When Lucas said that I could feel it was true. The freeness. I could do a spell right now and have nothing to worry about. But why did they bring us here. What do they want from us? “Why bring us here?” Lulu asked reading my mind.
“We thought you two would like to meet people with powers like yours.” Trenton said smiling at her.
“How did you two even know we were witches?” she asked seeming seriously concerned. “We didn’t use magic or give the slightest indication we were witches, so how did you know?”
“The same way you did, we felt it. We felt the magic circling throughout you.” Lucas said smiling at Lulu again.
“Is that all it was?” Lulu asked flirting with Lucas.
“Yeah I’m sorry that’s it,” he said shrugging his shoulders. I hadn’t noticed he had shimmering gold eyes like Luna.
“They already look like newlyweds,” Trent said leaning towards me.
“Yeah they should really get a room,” I said as he placed his hand over mine.
“So you’re not gonna be a stick in the mud anymore” Lulu asked wishfully.
“Hey if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em,” I said taking a fork full of her desert.
“So you like the food?” Trenton asked.
“Yeah, it’s blood free right?” I asked.
“Of course,” Trenton said laughing with me. The ease that entered his eye made him sort of glow. His eyes shimmered and his burgundy hair glistened in the dim restaurant light.
“So where are we any way?” Luna asked looking around the restaurant.
“We’re in what is called a sanction. It’s like an in-between holding place to cross from your world into ours,” Lucas said smiling at us.
“How do we get to Utopia?” I asked curiously.
“It’s right through those doors over there,” he said pointing to the tall stain glass doors. They were cut with ridges that the light seemed to radiate through. In the center of each door was a sun that seemed to be dancing in a circle from the light. I felt like whatever was on the other said of that door was calling to me. It was begging me to come.
“Are we allowed to go there?” I asked as Trenton and Lucas exchanged worried glances they were hoping we didn’t see. That didn’t seem to worry me. I was done being afraid now I really wanted to see Utopia.
“If you wanna come, it’ll be great,” Trenton said enthusiastically. His smile brighten again and the worry in Lucas eyes slowly faded.
“I for one wanna go,” Luna shrugged.
Than all eyes were on me, “Well it was my idea and a brilliant one at that so let’s go,” I said trying to match Trenton’s enthusiasm. Lucas paid for our meal as Trenton lead us through the doors. The light of the sun seemed so much brighter in Utopia. Outside the restaurant were these tiny white and silver lilies that smelled of cinnamon and some of vanilla. As we walked on to a park there was a flora sent I couldn’t recognize at first. It came from the strangest plant, “Water cusp,” I whispered as I kneted down to smell it.
Trenton walked over to my side. “Lucas’s sister loves these flowers they’re water cusp. In the spring right after they blossom they smell like a fresh rain fall,” he said picking one for me. As I looked up I saw the most wonderful statue of Venus ever made. It was carved out of marble and the hair seemed to be molded from gold. She had glimmering, blue, jewel encrusted eyes. This looked more like art work for a museum. The gorgeous daffodils and roses didn’t seem worthy enough of its company, this statue could have put the David to shame.
Then something very unexpected happened. The stone seemed to be turning to flush. Her eyes found mains and she smiled as she came off the petal stole. “Blessed be child of blood,” she said picking flowers, then skipping away.
“What just happened?” Lulu asked. With her eyes looking as though they would pop out her head.
“That was Venus, she comes pick flowers around this time every day,” Lucas said as if it was a normal every day thing for us too.
My head started to spin as we passed the lake. In the middle of it was a floating restaurant. I had a memory of lying under the table and looking through the glass floor and waving to the mermaid that swim by wishing I were one of them. Why did all of this seem so familiar? I’ve never been here, but why does it feel as if I never left.
“Are you feeling okay?”Trenton asked taking my hand.
“Umm, I’m a little dizzy,” I said putting my hand on my head. I had a throbbing headache that seemed to burn.
“How about we go get you some water,” Trenton said. Worry was written all over his face.
“Thanx,” was all I could say.
We walked awhile until we reached two huge wooden doors. He swiped a card and the doors slit open. He walked me up the cobble stone path to an iron garden chair. He demanded I sat in it. The cold metal against my legs made me wish I wore some pants instead of these stupid shorts.
“You look a little confuse,” Luna said.
“Kindda am I guess,” I said massaging my temples.
“How so?” Lucas asked knelling in front of me.
“Everything seems so familiar. It’s like I’ve been here a million times before. Yet somehow when I try to think about when and with who… I dunno. My head really hurts,” I said laying my head on Luna’s shoulder.
Trenton came back with my water and two women. They both kind of looked familiar. One reminded me of a model. She was tall and slander with long arms and hair that flow in a natural wind. Her smile was warm and bright like Trenton’s. On the other hand the second women made my head hurt even more. She looked like one of the princesses I used to dream about. She had curly dark brown hair that looked dirty red at the root. Her ebony skin glow in the sun light and her eyes looked just like Luke’s, little pools of sunshine. Her smile warmed me and brought tears to my eyes and hers. Her arms wrapped around me and felt overwhelmingly happy. The free at home feeling came back and I felt butterflies dancing in my stomach.
“Are you okay sweetheart?” the woman standing next to Trenton asked me.
“Yes honey do you feel well?” the woman that was hugging me asked as she held my shoulders and looked into my eyes.
“I feel fine,” I said crying. Crying. Crying? Why am I crying? “I don’t know why I’m crying,” I said aloud.
The woman embraced me again. I felt a mothers hug. It was like getting home for my first day of school and my mom not letting me go. No matter how much I begged her. It was weird because it seemed like my memory but it wasn’t at the seam time. What’s going on with me?
“Sorry,” she said after Lucas and Trenton gestured for her to stop.
“Natalie, Luna that’s my mom,” Lucas said.
“I’m Natasha,” she said putting her hand on the side of my face and looking into my eyes. I could see so much relief looking back at me and so much pain buried under mountains of happiness.
“This is my stepmom Clair,” Trenton said gesturing to the other woman.
“It’s nice t”- my phone cut me off. It was my mom and way past my curfew. “Hello,” I said quickly pulling the phone away from my ear because she was screaming.
“Natalie Evelyn Wood where are you?” a very anger voice greeted me over the phone.
“Just around the corner be home soon, mom,” I said in a sweet clam voice trying to ease her worry and anger, mostly anger.
“You know you should be home by now there’s school tomorrow and you’re still grounded.”
“Mom I know and I’m so sorry I’m on my way now,” I said totally embarrassed.
“I’ve been calling you forever you have this phone to keep you out of trouble. Now what am I supposed to think when you don’t pick up, hunh?” she asked pulling out guilt to add to my embarrassment.
“I love you mom I’m on my way home now okay,” I said trying to do a little damage control with the “L” word.
“Get home now,” she yelled
“Okay bye,” I said hanging up. “Sorry about that” I apologized.
“We should be getting you two, home now anyhow,” Lucas said holding onto Luna.
“No,” Natasha yelled causing us to stare at her. “You still look pretty sick. And I know you still feel dizzy. So why don’t you stay another moment and let me take care of you,” she said with that warm smile again.
