Lucas's hand hovered above the wolf's nose, his eyes locked on hers. The wolf's whiskers twitched, its ears perked up in a silent question.
Sophia held her breath, her heart pounding in her chest. This was a moment of truth – would Nina, in her wolf form, trust Lucas?
The wolf's nose nudged Lucas's hand, its eyes never leaving his face. A soft whine escaped its lips, and Lucas's face broke into a gentle smile.
"Nina," he whispered, his voice full of emotion. "I'm here. You're safe."
The wolf's tail wagged hesitantly, its ears folding back in a mixture of submission and trust. Lucas's eyes filled with tears as he stroked the wolf's fur, his touch gentle.
Sophia's eyes pricked with tears as she watched the exchange. This was a bond, a deep connection between Lucas and Nina that went beyond words.
As Lucas continued to stroke the wolf's fur, its eyes began to glaze over, and it let out a soft sigh. Sophia's heart swelled with emotion – Nina was exhausted, the transformation taking its toll on her body.
Lucas scooped up the wolf, crushing it against his chest. "Rest, Nina," he whispered, his voice full of tenderness. "I'll be here."
The wolf nuzzled its head into Lucas's chest, its eyes drifting shut. Sophia watched, transfixed, as Lucas carried the wolf to the bed, laying it down gently.
As the wolf's breathing evened out, Lucas sat beside it, his eyes never leaving its face. Sophia sat down next to him, her hand on his shoulder.
"Lucas," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "What happened? How did you...?"
Lucas's eyes never left the wolf's face. "I've been watching her, Sophia. Protecting her. I knew she was special, but I didn't know..."
He trailed off, his eyes filling with emotion.
Sophia's hand tightened on his shoulder. "You love her, don't you?"
Lucas's gaze snapped to hers, a flash of surprise in his eyes. Then, his expression softened, and he nodded.
The room was silent, the only sound the wolf's gentle breathing. Sophia's eyes met Lucas's, a silent understanding passing between them.
