Yellow Wood 1988There was a yellow wood before me, Full of mellow sunlight mixed with tawny shade; But for all its golden peace it Seemed to make me feel afraid. It should have seemed a refuge like the Stained glass shadows in a church; But it did not. Like a hearty slap on the back it rang hollow, It seemed cold; A shiver took my shoulders as I Started down the path. I don’t even want to be here I was thinking as I walked. The curse of being human is The separateness of self. Walking on alone, Swirling color at my feet, Sunlight strobing through the tree tops, Scattered flowers scented sweet, My memory was far, So far away, With people I had known, Places I felt safe in, Faces I was cheered to see; There flickered on my face a smile Of pleasant memory.
