Chapter 8Christine McCrae storms to the front of the room and yanks the quilt out of Hamish and Wanda’s hands. There is an audible gasp from the audience, and Ruth says, “Christine, that’s a very old quilt. It must be handled with care.” “What I’d like to know is how you got it?” Christine turns to Emma with a look of such anger that Emma takes a step back. “Because last time I saw it, it was in my granny’s hope chest.” “It — it came with the house,” Emma stammers. “It was in the attic. In a trunk. It was there when I moved in. I — I don’t even know where your grandmother lives.” Mavis steps between them. “Now, come on, Christine. Don’t tell me you believe that somehow this woman moved into town, went to your granny’s house all the way up on Roan Mountain, stolt a quilt out of her hope
