Chapter 9Something changes for Emma after the guild meeting. It seems to her as though for the last month she’s been sitting in the audience waiting for a play to begin. The curtain has been drawn back so she can look at the scenery, but no actual players have been on the stage. Now, suddenly, the cast has appeared, groups of two and three here and there, chattering, working out bits of business, and, from time to time, waving to Emma and calling out hello. She first notices the change on Wednesday morning, when she decides to take a notebook to Helen’s and, over a cup of coffee, make a list of things she wants to do with the house now that everything’s unpacked and put away, and the house has been visited by both a plumber and an electrician.
