Chapter 14As she makes dinner that night, Emma listens to the news on the Chapel Hill NPR station she streams through her computer. She finds herself waiting for a story, as though she’d heard a teaser earlier for something that sounded interesting. Finally she realizes she is waiting to hear the story of Louellen Walls’ son or of Peggy Weaver, the young quilter they visited after saying goodbye to Louellen. She’s waiting to hear the news of her day, as though everyone would be interested in these women’s lives. As though anyone outside of Morgan County knew that they existed. Chopping carrots for salad, Emma thinks about the quilts she’s seen that day — Louellen’s MIA ghost quilt and Peggy Weaver’s Lone Star made entirely from fabrics she’d dyed herself, as well as the quilts they picked
