“Your phone,” Adrain picked up Mia’s phone and stretched it to her. Adrain took a glance at the phone and he just knew that it was Mia’s best friend who couldn't go a day without calling her at least twice a day and for some reason, he wished he had that kind of friend. The one who’s always calling to check up on him.
“Hey Shirley,” he suddenly jolted out of his world of reverie and looked at Mia. She was still resting her back on the wall while Adrain’s left hand was over her shoulder.
“Clubbing? Can I ever make it there? I am tired and I need to rest, please.” Mia sounded tired and uninterested but he was going to find out what the problem was after the call.
“Come on, girl. Come and have fun. I assure you, you will live every bit of it,” Shirely’s voice came blaring the phone.
“Still, I don't think I will be able to come. I don't feel like clubbing” Mia sounded sure about not wanting to the club but Shirely was persistent and Mia succumbed.
“Okay, fine. I will come,” Mia didn't plan to go, she wanted to spend more time with Adrain since their parent wasn't around but having a persistent friend like Shirley left her with no option but to go to the club.
“Club it is.” She said and walked to her wardrobe while Adrain stared at her.
“Can I at least come with you?” Adrain asked and she shared her head negatively. She didn't want more people to find out about the kind of relationship she has with her stepbrother and she also didn't want him to look at the hot girls at the club.
As Mia rummaged through her wardrobe, she couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt for leaving Adrain behind. She understood his desire to accompany her, but the thought of exposing their unconventional relationship to the prying eyes of strangers unsettled her.
"Sorry, Adrain," she murmured, avoiding his gaze. "I think it's best if you stay home tonight. I'll be back soon."
“You are ashamed of me?” He asked and she Momentarily stopped and walked back to where he stood. “I am not ashamed of you and I can never be.” She ran her hand on his chest and rested it on his shoulder.
“We just need to pipe low for now,” she said and Adrain nodded reluctantly, disappointment evident in his eyes. Mia hurriedly grabbed an outfit, hoping it would be enough to distract her from the guilt gnawing at her conscience.
With a final glance at Adrian, she headed out the door. “See you soon, baby,” she said and blew him a kiss while he forced a smile.
*************
The club was buzzing with excitement as she walked in. She wondered why the clubs were more crowded than places of worship as she skirted through the people -Some were dancing to the rhythm of the music while others cared less about dancing to the music. She finally sighted Shirley and she heaved a sigh and walked towards the bar where Shirley was seated.
“Hey, girl!” Shirley stood up from her seat and walked over to hug Mia. It was a moment of Genuine connection as the two ladies hugged each other and finally disengaged from the hug.
“Girl! I missed you like crazy. Since after your mum got married again, I have clubbed with my friend” Shirley felt left out about the happenings in her best friend's life and this seemed like the perfect time to know more about.
“So, tell me. What is it like living in your stepdad’s house?” Shirley knew that It wasn't easy for Mia while growing up and having to move into a bigger and better house where she lacked nothing was an answered prayer.
“Bliss,” Mia responded and signaled the bartender to give her the same drink as the one Shirley had in front of her.
“I expected nothing less and I'm happy that both you and your mom are happy,” Shirley said and a smile spread across Mia’s face.
“Thank you so much, my best. You have been nothing but amazing. Mia has never been open to anyone like she has been to Shirley and now, she is beginning to wonder if she should let Shirley in about her relationship with Adrian.
“Are you okay?” Shirley asked and Mia nodded negatively.
“Can I confide in you about something?” Mia asked and Shirley wondered what the problem might be.
“Of course, you can tell me anything, Mia,” Shirley replied and Mia heaved a sigh and gulped all the content on her glass.
“This place is rowdy and noisy. Can we go to a more quiet place?”
“Sure,” Shirley responded and led the way while Mia followed.
As they skirted through the crowd, Mia spotted Frank in the middle of the crowd but before she could get Shirley to see who she saw, Frank was out of sight and she wondered if it was him.
“Never mind, I thought it was someone, let's go,” Mia said and Shirley nodded.
They got to a more quiet place and Shirley smiled weirdly. “Is everything okay?” Shirley asked and Mia took in a deep breath.
“I'm in a relationship with Adrain” She finally let the cat out of the bag but Shirley looked a bit confused. “Adrain? How's Adrian?” Shirley didn't follow the whole story or rather got confused about which ‘Adrain’ her friend was referring to.
“Adrian, my stepbrother. Please, don't Judge me. The dude is damn cute and I couldn't resist his charms.
“Your stepbrother? Are you insane? It's more like dating your brother. It's just crazy!” Shirley’s voice was high pitched and the shock on her face says it all.
“I know it's crazy but I love him so much,” she said and Shirley hissed.
“Wait! You're dating your stepbrother?” a familiar voice said from behind Shirley and Mia and the ladies turned to see who it was and to their greatest surprise, it was Frank, Mia’s ex-boyfriend.
“gosh! I'm doomed!” Mia said aloud. Her hands sweating and her legs shaking.
