The ceremonial grove had been dressed for the occasion with the same care it had held for three generations of Darkfang bondings, silver ribbons wound through the low branches of the ancient oaks, candles floating in the shallow reflection pool at the clearings center, the whole space lit gold and flickering beneath a moon that had finally, fully, reached its peak.
Ravena stood at the edge of the tree line in her ceremonial robe, pale and shimmering, her mother fussing with the final pin in her hair while Briala hovered nearby, practically vibrating with excitement.
"You look incredible," Briala whispered. "He's going to forget how to breathe."
Ravena tried to smile, tried to let the excitement in the air settle the last of the nerves fluttering in her chest. Somewhere beyond the tree line, she could hear the low murmur of the gathered pack, hundreds of wolves assembling around the grove's perimeter, waiting for the ceremony to begin.
"Ready?" her mother asked, cupping her face gently.
"Ready," Ravena said, and mostly meant it.
They led her through the trees toward the clearing, the crowd parting into a hushed, reverent silence as she stepped into the candlelight. The elders stood near the reflection pool in their ceremonial robes, and beyond them, at the far edge of the grove where the shadows of the oak trees still clung deepest, she could make out the shape of the man waiting for her.
Her heart climbed into her throat. He stood with his back mostly to her, shoulders set, dark hair catching flecks of moonlight through the canopy above. Nerves, she told herself. Everyone's nervous before this.
She walked the length of the grove alone, as tradition demanded, the eyes of the entire pack following her every step, until she reached the reflection pool and the waiting figure finally turned to face her.
The ceremony proceeded exactly as it should. The head elder's voice rose in the old tongue, the ancient words of binding that had sealed a thousand bonds before this one, and Ravena reached out to take the waiting hands offered to her, her own trembling slightly with the weight of the moment.
The hands that closed around hers felt different than she expected steadier, somehow, calluses in slightly unfamiliar places but she told herself it was nerves, told herself she was imagining things in the candlelit half dark of the grove, and lifted her eyes to meet the gaze of the man she'd loved since she was seven years old.
Except the eyes that met hers weren't Zayden's.
They were darker. Steadier. Filled with something that looked, impossibly, like guilt and longing tangled together in equal measure, and for one frozen, disbelieving heartbeat, Ravena's mind simply refused to process what her body already understood.
"Axton?" The word left her in a whisper, barely audible over the elder's continuing chant, but it landed in his expression like a physical blow.
"Ravena, I....."
He didn't get the chance to finish.
The elder's voice reached its final, binding syllable, and the grove erupted into silver light, the goddess's answer, ancient and absolute, rippling out from their joined hands in a wave that swept through every wolf gathered in the clearing, marking the moment with a certainty no one present could mistake for anything but real.
The bond sealed.
Ravena felt it lock into place with a violence that stole the breath from her lungs not the warm, familiar rightness she'd spent years imagining, but something sharp and foreign and undeniably, irreversibly permanent, threading itself into the very core of her in a way that had nothing to do with the boy she'd loved her whole life and everything to do with the stranger standing in his place.
Somewhere at the edge of the grove, a horrified gasp rippled through the crowd, followed by a chorus of confused, panicked murmurs.
"That's not....." someone shouted. "That's Axton! Where's Zayden? Where is Zayden Darkfang?"
Ravena's head snapped toward the tree line just in time to see him emerge from the shadows where he'd been hiding, laughing, actually laughing, the sound dying in his throat the instant his eyes landed on the silver light still shimmering between Ravena and his stepbrother's joined hands.
"No." Zayden's voice cracked across the clearing, raw with a horror that hadn't existed in him thirty seconds earlier, when this had still been nothing but a stupid, arrogant bet. "No, that's not, it was supposed to be a joke, it was supposed to switch back before...."
But the light didn't fade. The bond didn't waver. Whatever the goddess had decided in that clearing, beneath that full and merciless moon, she had decided it completely and as Zayden's face contorted from disbelief into something far darker, far more dangerous, charging forward across the grove with murder written plain across every line of him, Ravena finally understood, with a clarity that turned her blood to ice, exactly what her life had just become.
The pack surged forward to hold Zayden back, chaos erupting on every side of the reflection pool, and through the screaming and the shoving and the horrified cries of the gathered witnesses, Ravena stood frozen at the center of it all, her hand still locked in Axton Voss's grip by a bond neither of them had asked for and neither of them could undo staring at the boy she loved as he fought three grown wolves just to reach her, his eyes wild with a fury that promised this was only the beginning.
