*Myra's POV*
Drake's step dad was my new boxing coach. Mitchell was my new trainer.
The only thing I thought to myself is 'What in the actual f**k?'
Everyone thought it was hilarious, but I didn't at all.
They've seen me defend myself now, but they've never seen me in my competitive mindset.
Blake and Micha have, but they stopped coming to boxing matches after I turned 15 because of an injury I had.
There's a difference between the two Myra's.
The defensive Myra, she can stop when pulled away. Boxing Myra, she doesn't stop 'til her hands raised.
Boxing is the one aspect of my life where I believe in myself. And when I believe in something, I never give up.
I sat in the camper for a while alone. I was actually really worried about what they'd think if they ever saw me in a ring. It terrified me honestly.
I simmered myself down and walked back out about 20 minutes later.
"You alright kid?" My dad asked.
"I don't think I wanna go through with training." I told My dad and his friends.
"And why the hell not?" Todd asked.
I looked over at Drake, Cooper, and Jordan. I saw the dad's look the same direction.
"You dont want them to see you box." Joe said shaking his head.
"You know how I--" I was cut off.
"My." I heard Brady say while walking over to me. "Why dont we go for a walk?"
I looked at him funny. "Alright?"
We started walking and got about 100ft from the campsite.
"Are you out of your mind?" he asked.
"What the hell are you talking about?" I asked.
"I heard you say you dont want to go through with the training." he said walking with his hands in his pockets. "My dad told me he told you about my shoulder."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"It's not easy to talk about Myra. It's devistating."
"I know how much you loved boxing."
"Do you know how much I'd kill to be able to box again?" he asked. "I can never step foot in to a boxing ring again with out my dad ripping me a new one. But you, you can!" he yelled.
"Brady.."
"No Myra! You're a great boxer! I've never known you to quit, But If you dont go through with this you're just flat out stupid!"
I stopped and looked at him with wide eyes.
"My, you love boxing! My dad said he's never seen someone float around the ring the way you do. One of us has to make it Myra. I can't so it has to be you."
I looked down.
"And if you give up, that just means you're scared, and not the competetor I thought you were."
I looked up at him. "I'm not scared."
"Then do it!" he yelled.
"I can't!" i yelled back!
"And why the hell not!"
"Because I dont want them to see that side of me!"
"What side of you Myra! The side of you thats motivated? Or focused? Or fearless?" he yelled then grabbed my shoulders. "You dont understand that what I've seen you do with a pair of gloves, is magic! It's mesmerizing. That is not something you should want to hide from them."
I just stared at him.
"You've got to do this. For me."
God damn it Brady. Why did he have to say that.
I sighed. "Alright."
"That's my girl." he smiled at me as we walked back.
We got back to camp and my dad pointed to the seat beside him telling me to sit.
Brady walked over to help the guys pack up the vheicles so we could unfortunately head back to North Carolina.
I was going to miss being here. But I was ready to go home.
I walked over and sat down.
"What was all that about?" he asked.
"He pretty much told me I was stupid if I threw boxing away." I told him.
"Which you are." Joe added.
"But he's not wrong Myra." Todd said putting his hand on my shoulder. "It broke Brady's heart when he had to quit. But you dont have to."
"And I'm not going to." I said looking over at Brady. "One of us hasto make it. And it's me now."
"That's my girl!" Todd said shaking my shoulder.
Yeah.. Thats me..
*Drake's POV*
Brady and Myra came back from their walk and he came over to help pack the cars as she talked to the dads.
"What was that about?" Blake asked.
"I pretty much guilt tripped her in to training." Brady laughed.
"She wasn't going to go through with it?" I asked.
"No." He replied.
"Why not?" I asked.
"When Myra's in a ring, the whole worlds blocked out, other than the person she's in it with. Just one song to get her in the zone, her facial expression changes and you can tell she's a completley different person just by the look in her eye. She's not Myra the person anymore. She's Myra the competetor." Brady said.
"And Myra the competetor, lets just say her beating the hell out of Dakota, was nothing compared to if she were in a ring." Nate said.
"And she said she didnt want you guys to see that side of her."
We all stopped talking and continued to pack the car.
'Was it really that bad?' I asked myself. Was what she did to Dakota or Lacey really be nothing compared to when she's in a boxing ring?
The cars were finally packed and we got ready to leave. Bruce and Sheila drove seperately up here so we could drive back instead of fly.
I was kind of dissappointed when Myra got in the car with her parents and not the guys and I.
But I figured she had alot of thinking to do about starting her training Tuesday.
I texted Johnny.
D; I have a question.
J; What?
D; Can I come to the Rumfords with you Tuesday.
J; I'm sorry bud. But Bruce called me, Myra and I talked and she asked me to keep you away from the house while she's training. Mitch and I are here setting up the sqare right now.
D; It's just one time Johnny. Please?
J; She's already nervous. I think you should just stay away from the house during sessions. If you want to hang out with Blake and Micha they can come to our house.
D; What's the training schedule like? Am I still going to be able to hang out over there?
J; Weekdays Tuesday and Thursday nights. Saturday morning and Sunday morning and night. Of course you'll be able to hang out over there. Why are you so concerned with her boxing schedule?
I didnt reply.
J; she's your girlfriend now huh.
D; yes.
J; You stay away from that house during sessions Drake.
Ugh.
*Myra's POV*
I needed some time to wrap my head around me bringing part of my past back to North Carolina with me. So I decided I would take the drive back with my parents instead of the boys.
Brady was right. I do love boxing. Just like music, boxing and dancing were my second languages. Boxing was actually alot like dancing in some ways. The foot work, the twists and turns to dodge a hit. By the time I was 14 it became, well, natural to me.
"Whats on your mind sweetie?" my mom asked from the front seat.
"Brady." i said, then realizing how it sounded. "Oh god not in that way. Im thinking about how Brady cant box anymore because of his shoulder."
"Things happen My. Brady made one mistake and in a split second he was down and out." My dad said.
"I know, just, I havent been in a ring since we moved. It's a little nerve wrecking, but exciting all at once."
"Well, Hoosey's at the house setting up square right now. You'll get back in to it." He said to me.
I just stayed quiet.
"You love it sweetheart. We knew you'd find your way back some day, so we kept in stored in the shed outback for when you were ready." my mom smiled.
"Im going to put my headphones in if thats alright."
"Of course honey. If you fall asleep we'll wake you when we stop."
I put my headphones in, just when I did I got a text from Drake.
D; hows the ride?
M; It's ok. Just talking.
D; about boxing?
M; somewhat yeah.
D; can I ask you something?
M; of course.
D; did you ask Johnny to keep me away from the house while you're training?
I didn't respond.
D; you did, didnt you...
M; I did...
D; why would you do that.
M; It's complicated
D; I'll talk to you later Myra.
M; don't do that.
D; do what?
M; act like i'm doing something wrong. I'm just not ready for you to see certain sides of me yet.
D; I want every side of you Myra. Don't you get it? I dont care how bad they get, they're a part of you. Thats all I want.
M; You said we'd go as slow as I wanted.
D; ok. just please, promise me you'll think about reconsidering.
I guess it wasnt to much to ask. I promised him I'd let him get to know me, and that if he wanted i'd get to know him. But I'm not sure if the boxer in me was something I wanted him to know. But, the least I could do is try.
M; I promise.
D; Thank you baby.
M; say it again :)
D; oh shut up (;
This was all new to me. Dakota had never asked me to do anything with boxing. He never came to a single match. I'm not even sure if he knew I box. I didnt know what to do. So, I texted the one person who I knew would be honest.
*Blake's POV*
M; Can I talk to you?
B: What did I do this time?
M; Nothing. But, can it stay between us please? Not you, me, and your entire car?
Micha was driving and I'm pretty sure the other guys were alseep.
B; Sure.
M; Drake wants to be at the house when I start training Tuesday.
B; Ok?
M; I asked Johnny to keep him away.
B; I dont see what the problem is Myra. It's not like you suck.
M; No, but I'm not sure if thats a part of me I want him to see..
B; Why?
M; because when we left i thought i was done. i put it behind me. But now Brady.
B; You two were a team My. If he can't do it, he's gotta do it through you.
M; He said I needed to do it for him.
B; I agree. But you also need to do it for you. If you dont, you'll never know if you had or have what it takes.
M; he says he wants to see every side of me.
B; please tell me he means clothed.
M; i cant stand you.
B; so let him see Myra. Eventually you're going to have to let him in.
M: This is hard. Dakota never wanted anything like this.
B; there's a difference My. Dakota was never there for you. Drake's doing this right by your side. Let him be there for you.
M; it's not that easy.
B; It is. Just let him be at the house. He doesnt have to be out there with you guys to support you.
M; Will you keep him inside.
B; I will. But we'll all be watching out the window i***t. I've been waiting to see you start to get back to the old you. Stop questioning it. You love it Myra. But you've got to let him love it with you or love that side of you.
*Myra's POV*
"Your fingers are speakin really loud kid." i hear my dad yell so i can hear him.
"What?" I yelled back. "Oh sorry." i said taking out my headphones.
"You're doing alot of texting sweetie."
"Oh.. It was Drake and Blake."
"Hows their drive?" My mom asked.
"They didnt tell me."
"Then what are you talking about."
"Well, Drake wants to be around while I'm training. Blake thinks I should let him see that side of me. But--"
"Myra, relationships require loving every part of the person you're with love." My mom turned around and said. "Take your dad for example. When we met, he was so broken because of the Navy. But I worked with him every day to make sure he knew I was there for him. He still has PTSD because of it, but him talking to me and letting me help him through those moments make me love him so much more."
"And your mother loving me and helping me through the worst parts of me makes me feel so lucky to have her. Sometimes you just have to let people see the sides of you that scare even yourself." My dad said grabbing my moms hand. "So I think you should let him at least be at the house."
I thought for a few minutes.
"Can you call Johnny?" I asked
"Sure honey." My dad smiled.
*Drake's POV*
I was asleep when I felt my phone vibrate.
J; I dont know what you said, but alright.
D; what are you talking about?
J; Bruce called and said Myra changed her mind, but she doesnt want you out with us, you have to stay with the boys inside.
D; really?
J; yes. The 4 of us have very high hopes for her bud, you cant be there distracting her while she's training. she needs to focus.
D; so i can be there?(:
J; while she's training yes. her matches may be completely different thing for her.
D; how do you already have matches set up?
J; I'm John Jacobs kid. Get some sleep. I'll see you in a few hours.
I automatically texted Myra.
D; thank you.
M; thank blake and my parents. I'm still not so sure.
D; I'm positive.
M; of what?
D; goodnight Myra (:
"What'd you say to Myra?" I asked.
He smiled. "To let you love it with her, or let you love that side of her."
"I can be at the house." I smiled.
"I figured she'd break." Micha said from the drivers seat.
"Why is she so concerned about this?" Cooper asked.
"Alright, so you know Myra started boxing at 10?" Blake asked.
"Yeah?" the three of us in the back seat said.
"It started off as just a hobby. For a few years she'd just do it because it was fun. Then the night our grandfather died, she walked out to the heavy bag our parents got her for, I think it was christmas. She put her headphones in, and then we saw her face change. She stayed out there for 3 hours just hitting this bag until my dad dragged her in. Her hands were bruised inside the glove." Micha told us.
"What the hell." Jordan asked.
"Certain things bring out this side of My where when she starts she cant stop until physically made too or a bell rings now. That night she was so upset, or angry, she just didnt stop. Her hands didnt hurt. She wasnt tired." Micha added.
"Now everytime we see her face change, we stay away until our dad gets her." Blake said.
"So what's that have to do with anything?" Jordan asked.
"She's nervous because she knows Todd." Blake said.
"And?" I asked.
"And knowing Todd, he told your step dad the best way to get her to focus." He added.
"Making her mad. Or Todd gave him the playlist that gets her heated."Micha laughed.
"Are you trying to say Johnny and Mitch have to purposely make her mad?" Cooper asked.
"This should be interesting." I laughed.
"Or terrifying" Jordan laughed.
We spent the last 2 hours of the drive talking and listening to music.
We were excited to get back to our parents.
But we already missed the new friends we made in Minnesota.
But, we'll be seeing them again.
Guarenteed.
