BEYOND THE CLAN

1623 Words
The night swallowed Kael the moment he stepped beyond the clan walls. He walked beneath the trees without looking back. Not once. Behind him was everything he had known for seventeen years—the clan courtyard, the training grounds, the cold eyes of the elders, and the laughter that followed him whenever another cultivation test ended in failure. Ahead was darkness. Kael preferred it. At least darkness didn't pretend to care about him. His footsteps carried him farther from the clan. The path beneath his feet was familiar at first. He had traveled this road many times when gathering herbs with the younger disciples. But tonight, he wasn't returning before sunset. Tonight, he wasn't returning at all. His fingers brushed the wooden pendant hanging beneath his clothes. Lina. Kael stopped. For a moment, he imagined her standing beside the river tomorrow, waiting for him. She would probably be angry. Then worried. Then she would ask someone what happened. And eventually, she would learn that he had left. Kael lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry." The words disappeared into the wind. He continued walking. But he didn't throw the pendant away. Lina was the only person in the clan who had never treated him like an object of pity or ridicule. That made her valuable. Perhaps not now. But someday, an ally could be worth more than a hundred enemies. Kael remembered that. Trust was dangerous. But so was having no one at all. The forest gradually swallowed the last traces of the clan. The path narrowed. Trees rose around him, their branches twisting together like dark fingers. Moonlight slipped through the gaps above, painting pieces of the forest silver before the clouds covered them again. Kael slowed. He studied his surroundings. A large tree with a split trunk. A moss-covered boulder. A stream flowing toward the east. He memorized them. If he survived the night, he might need to find his way back. If he needed to return to the clan one day... He wanted to know the terrain. His expression hardened. He wasn't leaving forever. Not yet. One day, he would return. But when that day came, he refused to be the same powerless boy they had driven away. A strange rustling came from the bushes. Kael stopped. His hand moved toward the knife at his waist. He didn't draw it. Instead, he listened. The sound came again. Closer. Heavy. Not the movement of a rabbit. Not a deer. Something large. Kael's eyes narrowed. He slowly turned his head. Two pale eyes stared at him from between the trees. His breathing stopped. A massive black wolf stepped into the moonlight. Silver markings ran along its body like veins of frozen lightning. Its shoulders were nearly as high as Kael's chest. A low growl rolled through the forest. Kael's fingers tightened around his knife. Spirit beast. He had heard stories about them since childhood. Even a weak spirit beast could tear an ordinary human apart. Kael studied the creature. Large body. Powerful limbs. Sharp claws. Its attention was fixed entirely on him. He glanced around. No easy escape. The wolf took another step. Kael took one backward. The wolf stopped. So did he. They stared at each other. Kael's mind raced. He couldn't defeat it. He couldn't outrun it on open ground. So there was only one question. Where could he make the beast lose its advantage? His eyes moved toward the trees. Then toward the narrow slope behind him. Then farther ahead. A cliff. Kael's expression changed. He had seen it earlier. A terrible place to be cornered. But perhaps... The wolf suddenly lunged. Kael moved. He threw himself sideways as claws tore through his sleeve. Pain burned across his shoulder. Three deep lines opened beneath the torn fabric. Kael rolled across the ground and immediately got back up. Blood ran down his arm. He ignored it. The wolf turned. Too fast. Kael ran. Branches whipped against his face. Roots twisted beneath his feet. Behind him came the thunderous sound of the beast crashing through the forest. Kael didn't run blindly. Every few seconds, he glanced back. Distance. Speed. Movement. The wolf was faster. Much faster. He couldn't escape it. So he needed something else. The cliff appeared between the trees. Kael's eyes narrowed. There. The wolf was still behind him. Good. He changed direction slightly, forcing the beast to follow. The distance between them disappeared. Kael could hear its breathing now. Closer. Closer. He reached the cliff edge and stopped. His boots scraped against loose soil. Below him was darkness. He looked down. He couldn't see the bottom. The wolf emerged from the trees. Its jaws opened. Kael slowly turned to face it. There was fear in his eyes. But beneath the fear was calculation. The beast lowered its body. Kael tightened his grip on the knife. He had one chance. Maybe less. The wolf charged. Kael waited. Three steps. Two. One. He moved sideways. The wolf's claws ripped through his shoulder again. Kael gritted his teeth. Pain exploded through him. But he didn't fall. The wolf's momentum carried it forward. Kael kicked the creature's hind leg. It stumbled. Only for a heartbeat. But a heartbeat was enough. Kael grabbed a loose stone and threw it directly at the beast's face. The wolf flinched. Kael ran toward the cliff. The creature recovered almost instantly. It charged after him. Kael reached the edge. He looked down once. Then jumped. The wolf lunged. Its claws caught the edge of Kael's robe. The fabric tore. Kael dropped into the darkness. Wind screamed past his ears. His stomach twisted. He had expected death. Instead, his back slammed against the cliff wall. CRACK! Pain exploded through his ribs. Kael couldn't breathe. His body struck another rocky ledge. Then another. Each impact felt like his bones were being shattered. He reached for something—anything—to stop his fall. His fingers closed around empty air. Then— BOOM! His body crashed onto a narrow stone shelf. Everything went black. Kael didn't know how long he remained unconscious. When his eyes opened, darkness surrounded him. His first thought was simple. Am I alive? He tried moving his fingers. They responded. His legs. Still working. He slowly pushed himself upright. Pain stabbed through his ribs. He nearly collapsed again. "Still alive..." His voice sounded strange in the darkness. He touched his shoulder. Blood covered his fingers. His ribs were badly bruised, perhaps cracked, but he could still breathe. That meant he wasn't dying yet. Kael looked upward. Far above him, a tiny patch of moonlight marked the cliff's edge. The wolf was gone. Or perhaps it was still waiting. Either way, climbing back up was impossible. Kael laughed bitterly. "Seventeen years of being useless..." He looked at the enormous cliff. "...and now I'm going to die because I tried to escape." He rested his head against the stone. For several moments, he simply listened. Water dripping. Wind moving through cracks. His own breathing. Then he heard something else. Drip. Kael opened his eyes. A faint sound came from somewhere deeper inside the cliff. Drip. He slowly turned. There was a narrow passage behind him. He hadn't noticed it before. Kael stared into the darkness. Every instinct told him to stay where he was. But staying here meant waiting for death. He forced himself upright. One step. Then another. Each movement sent pain through his ribs. He entered the passage. The walls gradually changed. The rough stone became strangely smooth. Ancient markings appeared beneath the dust. Kael stopped. He recognized the symbols. Not completely. But enough. He had seen similar characters in forbidden texts inside the clan's library. Ancient cultivation inscriptions. His eyes narrowed. Why would something like this be hidden beneath a cliff in the Blackwood Forest? He touched one of the markings. Cold. Far colder than the surrounding stone. He immediately pulled his hand away. A strange feeling crawled through his chest. It was almost as if... something had noticed him. Kael stared into the darkness ahead. "Who's there?" Silence. He waited. Nothing answered. His hand tightened around the knife. Then he remembered something. The stone. The Spiritual Awakening Stone. The laughter. The elders calling him worthless. His empty meridians. For seventeen years, everyone had believed there was nothing inside him. Maybe they were right. Or maybe... Kael looked at his bleeding hand. "...they simply didn't know what they were looking at." A faint smile touched his lips. It disappeared almost immediately. He continued deeper into the passage. The air became colder. The ancient markings became more numerous. Some were carved into the walls. Others appeared beneath his feet. Then Kael noticed something strange. The symbols were glowing. Barely. A faint golden light pulsed beneath the stone. His heartbeat quickened. He followed it. The passage opened into a small chamber. At its center stood an ancient stone platform. Kael took one step forward. Then stopped. Something was sitting on the platform. A large object wrapped in darkness. He couldn't see it clearly. But he could feel it. A presence. Ancient. Silent. Waiting. Kael's instincts screamed at him to leave. For the first time that night, his calculations failed him. He didn't know what was inside the chamber. He didn't know who had created this place. And he certainly didn't know why the faint golden light seemed to be growing brighter the closer he came. Kael swallowed. His hand slowly tightened around his knife. Then the object on the stone platform... moved. Kael froze. A deep sound echoed through the chamber. Not a growl. Not a voice. Something between the two. His blood ran cold. And somewhere in the darkness ahead— something opened its eyes. To be continued...
