~Austin POV Once again I watched the girl of my dreams walk away from me, hurt evident on her face. I let go of Samantha instantly and she patted my arm in support, Isabelle watched as Avery stormed away. I started to follow Avery, the very last thing I wanted was to hurt her again. I hated the look she gave me, I knew she saw me with Sam, but it wasn't what she thought at all. Isabelle stopped me before I could chase after Avery, "Don't. I'll go." I nodded. I knew it was for the best, there was no way Avery would give me the time of day. "I'm sorry", Sam whispered to me and I wrapped her up in a hug, it wasn't her fault at all. I stood awkwardly by the bar waiting for Isabelle to return, hoping that Avery would be with her, but Isabelle returned by herself. "Sorry Austin, I tried to catch up to her but she was way too fast and I lost her in the crowd. Her friend Chloe said she left." Isabelle said. I sighed, and rubbed my hand over my face. What a mess. I wanted Avery more than anything, even if she hadn't been my mate I'd still have wanted her, I would have taken her on as my chosen Luna. Luna isn't even the right word for what Avery would be to me, she was the only daughter of an Alpha, next in line and I had no intention of taking that away to her. An Alpha and Luna would be equals, but Avery would always be above me, we'd run our packs together as joint Alpha's. Our territories were so close together it would be easy to merge, and I knew my pack would follow her, just like I followed her. I gave my sister a hug and decided it was time to go home. I had already spent too much time at the bar and I wasn't in the mood to party anymore. Before I could leave my sister slipped a piece of paper in my hand, I looked at it and saw it was a phone number. "Despite it being my birthday... I got you a gift. Now don't screw it up." My sister said to me, causing my face to light up with a huge grin. I wrapped her up into an even bigger hug. "You really are the best." I said to her and she laughed, but didn't disagree. I hugged Sam and took off so I could get home and start trying to win my girls heart. I made it home in record time and went up to my room, I pulled out the piece of paper my sister had given me and entered the number into my phone. I wiped my hands nervously on my pants. What was I going to say to her? I typed and retyped a message to her before I finally settled on, "It's not what you think, I'm not a douche." Within seconds I got a text back, "I think you have the wrong number." I groaned, I was an i***t of course she wouldn't have my number and I never gave her my name. I thought about playing with her for a few minutes, and not giving her my name, but I didn't want her to be mad at me for that. "I don't. It's Austin." I text back, hoping like hell she'd still respond. "What do you want?" She texted back and I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding. "You." I sent back. "Ha. That's hilarious. I don't have time to play games. Why don't you go back to your girlfriend and leave me alone." Came her response. "Please hear me out." I practically begged her. "About what? The fact that I saw my mate, yeah that's right I figured out you were my mate, holding some other girl, right after another girl threw herself at you." She sent back. I dialed her number and called her. She sent it straight to voicemail. So I called again, I knew I looked desperate but desperate times called for desperate measures, and I wanted Avery. I knew I was coming across as a stalker, but I didn't care she had to hear me out. Finally after the fourth call she picked up the phone. "What." She answered clearly exasperated with me, but her voice was like music to my ears. "I need to explain." I said. "Explain what? It's fine Austin, we don't know each other all that well, let's just reject one another and let ourselves go." She said. "No!!" I practically yelled. "That's not what I want." I was starting to get frustrated. "Please, please hear me out." I begged. "Fine. Explain." She said and again I let out a sigh of relief, she didn't sound thrilled but at least she was willing to hear me out. "Sam is not my girlfriend." I started and Avery snorted. "Oh good, so she's just the flavor of the week." "No!!!" I groaned out in frustration, this was going to be harder than I thought. "She's my sister's mate." "Ok, that makes it so much worse, I might be into a little kink but that's way too far." She said clearly disgusted. "Not like that! She's been pretending to be my girlfriend. I'm an Alpha, I knew girls were going to try and get with me, mostly because they wanted to get with an Alpha. So it seemed like the smart thing to do. Take a fake girlfriend, to fend off all the other girls. That's what she was doing tonight, playing her role." I explained in a rush. "So, let me get this straight. You faked a girlfriend so other girls would leave you alone? That seems a little far fetched. Why would an Alpha of all things want to do that?" She asked. "Because of you." I said. Avery snorted. "You're blaming this on me?" "No. Not like that. I knew you were my mate, the first time I laid eyes on you, but I always managed to screw it up. When I saw you at the mall when I was sixteen, and you saw that girl throwing herself at me, I saw how hurt you were and I never wanted to do that to you. I thought if I remained single girls would get the point, but the older I got and no mate in sight the girls started to try harder and harder to become the next Luna. So it seemed like the easiest thing to do." Avery was silent for a few moments, and I was waiting for her response. "Please, please give me a chance." I begged her. I finally heard her sigh like she was giving in. "Ok. You can have one chance. Don't screw it up." She said to me.
