~Chelsea’s POV~
The cave was finally quiet, but it was a heavy kind of quiet. Sarah had finally drifted off, her small frame curled into a ball of exhausted sleep near the embers. Alicia was still clutching the bracelet I'd given her, her thumb tracing the white thread as if it were a lifeline. She wasn't crying anymore, but her green eyes were hollow, reflecting the dying firelight. “She needs to move," the Exile rumbled from the shadows. He didn't look at us. He was hunched over the stolen ledger, his glacial blue eyes scanning the cramped, ink stained pages of the ledger. "The birthday is a marker, Tribrid. Your blood is reaching a boiling point. If you stay still, the divine ozone will char your lungs from inside.”
Alicia didn't move. She looked like she was afraid that if she stood up, that Aries would take her over again. “He's right, Lish," I whispered, my own voice sounding like a silver chime that had been cracked. My head was still thumping from the hypnosis I'd used at the border, but I forced myself to stand. "We didn't run this far just to burn out in a cave. The Exile finally looked up, his face a map of old wars. "The ledger... it's not just taxes and territory, girl. Your father wasn't just hoarding power. He was mapping it." He pointed to a page where Alicia's name was written in a dark, menacing red. "He knew exactly what you were. He was waiting for your 18th year to harvest the spark. He's already made a pact with the Shadow Packs to sell what's left of you."
Alicia's breath hitched. The electric charge in the air sparking back up. “Come," the Exile commanded, standing up. “There is a pool deep within the mountain where the iron is thick and the water is old. You need to submerge the wolf before the Alpha's hunters find a way to track your scent through the stone." We left Sarah sleeping and followed him deeper into the damp, red dark. The air grew colder, smelling of wet earth. We reached a cavern where a waterfall of crimson water spilled into a perfectly still, black pool."Enter," the Exile told Alicia. "Don't fight Aries. Don't cage her. Invite her in. If you don't achieve a Perfect Shift tonight, you won't survive the second dawn.”
Alicia looked at me, her eyes pleading. I reached out and squeezed her hand. I could feel her power vibrating against my skin. "I'll be right here, Alicia," I promised. "I'II be the anchor. Just go." As she stepped into the freezing, red clay water, I felt the shift in the air. The Exile stood beside me, his presence like a tectonic plate. “You have a gift, girl," he said, his voice low. "That Skye in you... it's the only thing that can bridge the gap between her human soul and that monster. When she shifts, don't look away. You have to talk her back to the shore." I nodded, my heart hammering. I watched as Alicia submerged herself. For a moment there was only the sound of the waterfall. Then, the pool began to glow with a silver lined light, and the bone chilling roar of a goddess began to rise from the depths.
The water in the black pool didn't just ripple it began to hum, a low frequency vibration that set my teeth on edge and made the metallic tang in my mouth double in intensity. The divine ozone was so thick now that I could see faint, jagged arcs of white light dancing on the surface of the water. The Exile stood perfectly still, his blue eyes glowing like a beacon in the dark. "She is fighting the merge," he whispered. “The wolf wants the body. The girl wants the soul. If they don't meet in the middle, they will both drown.” “Alicia!” I shouted, stepping closer to the edge. The cold air from the waterfall whipped my hair across my face. "Aries! Listen to the silver chime! Don't let go!"
Suddenly, the pool erupted. A massive shape breached the water, but it wasn't the chaotic, frightening monster from the cave. This was something else. This was a Perfect Shift. The wolf that climbed onto the slick stone was ginormous, her auburn fur slicked back and shimmering with a literal electric charge that illuminated the entire cavern. Her silver lined eyes were no longer vacant or feral. They were sharp, intelligent, and focused. I gasped, stumbling back, but then a voice not a sound, but a voice slammed into my mind. It felt like a warm summer breeze and a bolt of lightning all at once. “Chelsea?”The voice was Alicia's, but it was layered with a deep, resonant growl that vibrated in my chest. I stared at the massive wolf.
Her mouth hadn't moved but the connection was undeniable. “I can see you,”the voice echoed, clearer now. “I can see Skye in you.. it’s beautiful. I'm not lost, Chels. I'm finally whole.” The Exile let out a breath that sounded almost like a prayer. "The Tribrid has spoken." I felt tears prick my eyes, the weight of the Moonstone Pack and the terror of the escape finally feeling like something we could actually overcome. Alicia and Aries stepped toward me, her massive paws making no sound on the wet rock. She lifted her head, her silver lined eyes level with mine. “Thank you for the bracelet.” she projected and I felt a surge of pure, sisterly love that nearly knocked me over.
She turned her gaze toward the Exile, and the air grew heavy again. “Now,” she broadcasted, with a newfound authority. “Tell us what the ledger says about the Shadow Alpha. I want to know exactly who is coming for my family.” The Exile took a step toward the edge of the dark pool, he held the stolen ledger from the satchel like it was a cursed object. "Your father is a coward, Tribrid," the Exile rumbled, his eyes fixed on the massive auburn wolf. "He didn't just want to control you. He was terrified of you. This ledger contains the coordinates for the Harvest a ritual where the Shadow Alpha, a creature who feeds on the essence of other shifters, was meant to tear the divine ozone from your spirit on your 18th birthday."
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. My hazel eyes widened as I looked at Alicia at Aries. "The Shadow Alpha isn't a wolf of the moon," the exile continued, his voice dropping to a tectonic whisper. "He is a void. Your father promised him your power in exchange for eternal rule over the Moonstone Pack. The Harvest isn't just about killing you, it's about using your electric charge to bridge the gap between the living and the dead." "And the Shadow Alpha is already in the ravine. He doesn't need to track your scent, Alicia. He tracks the divine light you're giving off right now. By performing the Perfect Shift, you've lit a signal fire in the dark. He's coming, and he's bringing the hounds that even my clay traps cannot stop."
Aries let out a low, vibrating growl that made the waterfall spray falter. The electric charge in the air snapped, turning the cave walls a brilliant, temporary silver. “Let him come,”Alicia projected, her eyes flashing with a terrifying, calm certainty. “I am done being property. If he wants a god, I Will show him one that bites.” I looked at the Exile, then at my best friend. The metallic tang in my mouth was sharp, but for the first time, I wasn't afraid. We had the truth, we had Skye, and we had a wolf that could shake the stars. "Then we move at the second dawn," the Exile declared. "To the mountains summit, If we are to fight a void, we must do it where the moon is closest.”
