Chapter 4
Minerva woke up due to a terrible body ache, and noises. She frowned, rubbing her eyes in the process.
Her eyes finally cleared, and the memory of last night flooded her brain, everything replayed slowly. Her stepmother, stepsister and fiancé betrayal to losing her virginity to a stranger she has only seen once.
"Shameless slut." With widened eyes, she looked toward the source of the voice, and it turned out to be Ryder's mother, her supposed mother-in-law, but not only Ryder's mother was present. All the family members from both their sides, her friends, and Ryder's friend were also present.
These people were invited to their wedding to witness it.
She quickly covered her body with the duvet properly, not able to assimilate what was happening.
"Only in your dream will my son get married to you after this, you this shameless girl." Ryder's father spat coldly, equally looking at her in disgust like everyone in the room.
"Please don't blame Minerva, blame me. I brought her up. I'm responsible for not giving her a good upbringing. Minerva, why have you done this?" Cecelia, Minerva's mother-in-law, shed fake tears, trying to portray herself as a helpless mother, but it was only Minerva who understood everything.
She knew her stepmother was only trying to evoke people's pity and divert people's hatred towards her.
Minerva could see the brief smirk exchanged by Maya and Ryder, everything was all their plan, and they had set her up once again, and she had fallen into the trap. It surely means that the man yesterday who she thought to be a knight in shining armor was also sent by them. She couldn't believe she had once again fallen into their trap.
"No, mom, don't blame yourself. You've equally brought Minerva and I up the same way. Minerva was the one to go astray from your teaching." Maya soothed her mother, also wiping fake tears from her eyes.
Minerva watched her heartbreaking as the people she called her own started to insult her and called her names.
"Minerva, I can't believe you could stoop so low and do this to me. We were supposed to get married and be together like this morning, but because I refused you and told you to wait till after the wedding, you went ahead to sleep with another man. How shameless can you be? I regret loving you."
Minerva's eyes became red at his words, and she finally spoke. "How dare you try to question my character? You, yourself and Maya knew that you weren't in the position to judge me, and you were not the only ones who regretted it. I regretted loving you and cursed the day I met you."
Minerva's uncle from her maternal family went ahead and slapped Minerva on the cheek. "I can't believe my sister gave birth to a shameless daughter like you, and I can clearly see that you are nothing but a wayward girl. You don't deserve the property willed to you. Maya deserves it more than you do and from now on your mother's maternal family is severing ties with you. We don't want our reputation to be spoiled by calling someone like you our family members."
Minerva's hope was all shattered, her eyes red, but she didn't want to she tears in front of these people.
"Uncle, wait, please let me explain everything to you. It's not like the way you think." Minerva tried to make him understand, but all her words were on deaf ear as her uncle had already left.
"I can't believe this. I thought you were innocent and a good girl, but now I don't want to be friends with you again," one of her friends said, leaving the room.
"Even I don't want to have anything to do with you again." One after the other, the people who came to celebrate her wedding left, leaving only her stepmother, stepsister, Ryder and his family.
With a folded hand and fake tears, Cecelia looked at Ryder's mother. "Please, don't let our family's reputation be ruined. Please, we'll accept any punishment you give us."
Ryder's mother quickly hugged Cecelia. "There is no such thing. Please don't blame yourself when you are not the one at fault. And the only thing we can do for both family reputations to be restored is to get Maya married to Ryder. I think they'll both get along well. What do you think?"
Ryder's mother was also very cunning. She knew about the relationship between Ryder and Maya before and also hearing now that Minerva's property would be given to Maya, she actually proposed this marriage as they eventually wouldn't lose anything. Minerva's property would still be in their family.
"Since this is the only thing we could do, I accept. Let's fix a wedding date for them and get them married." The two families agreed, beaming after exchanging hugs and handshakes.
Cecelia saw them off while it only remained with Minerva.
Maya looked up at Minerva with taunt. "Minerva, how is it? Do you enjoy the way you fell from grace to grass?"
She clicked her tongue and shook her head. "You are very pitiful now with no one to call yours as you already know that Ryder is mine and so is your property. Your life is utterly ruined, dear stepsister. Anyway, bye and come home when you've freshened up, we'll still accept you. And by the way, I brought your phone." With that, Maya left.
Minerva couldn't believe she'd seen the real face of Maya after twenty years. She couldn't believe they'd been using mask all the while.
She recalled the man's words of not regretting it. She understood clearly and regret is what she felt right now. She picked up her phone that was thrown on the bed by Maya. The phone screen lit up.
She checked it, and it was an email from the company she's working for. With a heavy heart, she checked it, and it turned out to be a dismissal letter stating that they no longer wanted her in their company.
