Night swallowed the coastal metropolis, casting long, bruised shadows across the pavement as five dark figures emerged from the churning surf.
They were the Shadow Guards Queen Seraphine’s personal assassins.
As their sea drenched boots hit the dry sand, shimmering, bioluminescent currents coiled around their limbs. Their heavy kraken-scale armor dissolved, seamlessly morphing into sleek, ordinary human attire. The terrifying red glow of their eyes dimmed into muted brown, hiding the monstrous truth beneath a façade of mundane travelers.
Commander Vane, the leader, adjusted his leather jacket, his voice a low rasp that barely carried over the crashing waves. "Split up. Find the mortal woman. Leave no trace of her existence."
Without a sound, the guards melted into the city streets, moving like grease through water.
For hours, they stalked the metropolis. They moved past neon lit alleyways, through crowded transit hubs, and along dark residential blocks, meticulously sifting through the scent of salt, exhaust, and human fear to track Elena’s unique essence.
Finally, four hours after midnight, a tall guard halted outside a weathered, three story apartment building. Rain began to drizzle, painting the rusted fire escapes in slick chrome.
The guard pressed a finger to his ear, sending a telepathic signal through the deep current. "I’ve found the girl."
Across town, nestled in the secluded hills, a very different kind of predator paced through a multimillion-dollar private villa.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
The wooden tip of a heavy walking stick struck the polished white marble, a rhythmic prelude to violence. Marco, the city’s most brutal gang kingpin, limped across the grand living room. Rage distorted his scarred features into something ghastly, making the thick stitch marks along his jaw twitch. His shattered leg throbbed with a relentless, white hot fire a agonizing reminder of the humiliation he had suffered when that strange, otherworldly man had broken him like a dry twig.
His right-hand man, Knox, sprinted into the room, his breath ragged. "Boss. We’ve got her."
Marco froze. His dark eyes flared with venomous delight. "Where?"
Knox handed him a damp leather folder. Marco snatched it, his yellowed teeth bared as he skimmed the surveillance photographs of Elena entering her apartment building.
A cruel, guttural laugh bubbled up from his chest. "So... the little rat thought she could run. Thought she could hide in the gutters."
His thick fingers tightened, crushing the paper into a ball. "She made me look weak. She made me bleed." He slammed his walking stick down so hard the marble beneath it fractured. "Gather every man we have. Call the mercenaries from the docks. I want every alleyway blocked, every window watched, and every exit sealed."
A dozen hardened enforcers stood at attention, their heavy handguns clicking as rounds were chambered.
Marco stepped up to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out toward the dark skyline. Rain ran down the glass like tears. "Tonight... I’m going to collect her debt in skin and bone."
The city slept on, utterly ignorant of the converging storms. Two deadly forces were closing in on a single, unsuspecting woman: one driven by human greed and bloodthirsty humiliation, the other bound by a ruthless royal mandate.
And caught between them was Elena, sleeping softly in a small, lit room.
Deep beneath the crushing weight of the ocean, where sunlight had never reached, Prince Kael sat in the oppressive silence of his private sanctuary.
The chamber was crafted from polished obsidian and lit only by the ghostly glow of passing abyssal creatures beyond the crystal walls. Yet, despite the splendor of his realm, Kael felt suffocated. His hand rested over his chest, right where his heart hammered a heavy, irregular rhythm.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her. The fragile mortal woman with tears in her eyes, trembling like a wounded bird .
A heavy knock echoed through the stone door.
"Enter," Kael commanded, his voice deep and smooth as silk, yet carrying an edge that could cut steel.
The ancient door ground open. Grand Tutor Oryn stepped inside, his long white beard trailing over embroidered robes. The old man bowed low, his knees trembling against the sea floor.
"What brings you to my private quarters, Tutor?" Kael asked without looking at him. His tone was laced with casual disdain. "Has my stepmother sent you to force Lady Nerissa onto my lap again? To lecture me on my royal duty?"
"I... I came of my own accord, Your Highness," Oryn squeaked, a cold sweat breaking out beneath his gills.
Kael turned slowly. His ice-blue eyes locked onto the old man with lethal intensity. "Speak, then. Before I lose what little patience I have left."
Oryn swallowed hard, his hands twitching within his oversized sleeves. "I have... dire news, my Prince. Her Majesty, Queen Seraphine... she has dispatched the Shadow Guards to the surface world."
Kael didn't move, but the air in the room grew instantly heavy. "Why?"
"They are hunting the mortal," Oryn whispered, his voice trembling so violently his teeth clicked. "The Queen knows the girl touched you. She knows the ancient prophecy is stirring. Her Majesty's order to Commander Vane... is to slaughter the woman before dawn."
Boom!
An explosive wave of dark, raw power burst from Kael's body.
The sound was deafening, like a depth charge detonating inside the room. The obsidian walls cracked, hairline fissures spreading across the stone like spiderwebs. Outside the crystal windows, the ocean currents twisted into a violently swirling vortex, terrifying the leviathans lurking in the deep.
Across the sprawling expanse of the Ocean Kingdom, guards, servants, and noble lords froze where they stood, instantly paralyzed by the terrifying, suffocating pressure of Kael's unleashed aura.
"She dares?" Kael’s voice vibrated through the floorboards, no longer entirely human. It was the roar of an apex predator.
Grand Tutor Oryn dropped to his face, sobbing hysterically into the silt. "Forgive me, my Prince! Forgive me! Queen Seraphine holds my children in the black dungeons! She threatened to feed them to the deep-sea hydras if I did not keep her secrets! I have always been loyal to you the true heir to the throne!"
Kael loomed over the weeping old man, his glowing blue eyes burning through the shadows. The sheer heat of his fury was boiling the water around his shoulders.
"You brought me this truth almost too late, Oryn," Kael snarled softly, the quietness of his voice far more dangerous than his roar. "If a single hair on her head is harmed... your loyalty will not save you."
Without waiting for a reply, Kael turned.
He didn't walk; he exploded forward. The heavy stone doors exploded outward from the force of his launch. Kael shot into the dark abyss like a blue lightning bolt, tearing through the deep-sea currents with a sonic boom that echoed through the trenches, leaving a wake of boiling water behind him.
His heart thrashed in his chest not from exertion, but from a terrifying, unfamiliar panic.
Hold on, little mortal, he thought, his jaw clenched so hard his fangs bit into his lip. If they touch you, I will burn the surface to ash.
At that very moment, in the Grand Coral Hall, the air was suffocatingly sweet with the perfume of rare sea-orchids.
Queen Seraphine sat atop her towering throne of polished black coral, her regal posture radiating absolute authority. The hall was packed with the kingdom’s elite prominent nobles in shimmering silks, decorated military generals, and high-ranking councilors, all whispering in hushed, expectant tones.
Standing gracefully at the base of the dais was Lady Nerissa, dressed in a gown woven from spun pearls and starlight. Beside her stood her father, the Prime Minister, beaming with arrogant pride. Nerissa smirked, flicking her long golden hair over her shoulder, basking in the envious glares of the lesser noble ladies.
Queen Seraphine slowly stood up, her dark violet robes trailing behind her like spilled ink. The entire hall instantly fell dead silent.
"My beloved subjects," Seraphine began, her voice echoing with hypnotic grandeur. "Today, we gather to ensure the absolute purity and power of our realm. The future of the royal bloodline has been carved into stone."
Whispers of delight rippled through the crowd. Nerissa smoothed her skirt, casting a triumphant look toward the empty space where the Prince should have been standing.
"I hereby officially announce," Seraphine declared, raising a jewel-encrusted goblet, "the betrothal of my stepson, Prince Kael, to Lady Nerissa of the High Reefs!"
A thunderous round of applause erupted through the hall. Nobles bowed, trumpets made of polished conch shells sounded, and Nerissa leaned in to accept congratulations from a dozen eager kiss-asses.
"The wedding," Seraphine continued, a dark, victorious smile gracing her red lips, "shall take place upon the next full moon"
Clack!
The grand oak doors burst open. A masked royal intelligence officer scrambled into the hall, ignoring all royal etiquette as he fell on his knees at the foot of the throne, gasping for air.
Seraphine’s smile withered into an icy glare. "How dare you interrupt this ceremony? Speak, before I have your tongue fed to the crabs."
The guard scrambled up the steps and whispered breathlessly into her ear. "Your Majesty... Prince Kael has breached the perimeter gates. He broke through our forces and is swimming at maximum speed toward the human surface."
Seraphine’s eyes narrowed into slits. "Why?"
"Grand Tutor Oryn betrayed the court," the guard trembled. "He told the Prince about the Shadow Guards. He knows about the mortal woman."
The air in the Grand Coral Hall temperature plummeted to absolute zero.
Seraphine’s face transformed from regal elegance into a mask of pure, demonic rage. The applause faltered. The music died. The nobles looked around in terror as a suffocation warning rippled through their instincts.
Nerissa’s triumphant smile shattered into a look of utterly pathetic confusion. "Your Majesty? What is happening? Where is Kael?"
Seraphine ignored her completely. She looked down at the court, her voice dropping into a chilling, soft hiss that terrified every soul present.
"Clear the hall. All of you. Now."
No one dared to argue. The nobles practically trampled one another in their desperate hurry to exit the chamber. Within seconds, the grand hall was empty, leaving only the Queen, her personal guards, and the heavy, terrifying silence.
"Bring me the Grand Tutor," Seraphine ordered, her breath coming in ragged, furious gasps. "Drag him to the bottommost dungeon. Strip his skin and let him rot in the dark."
"Yes, Your Majesty!" two guards barked, vanishing instantly.
Seraphine descended the marble steps, her fingernails digging so deeply into her palm that dark blue blood beaded on her skin. She turned to her shadow-commander standing in the corners.
"Send the elite Vanguard. Intercept my stepson before he reaches the shore. If he resists..." Her eyes flashed with an abominable, murderous light. "Break his limbs. Drag him back in chains."
"And the mortal girl, Your Highness?" the commander asked softly.
Seraphine stroked the living silver snakes woven intricately through her hair. The reptiles raised their triangular heads, their tiny black eyes gleaming as their fangs dripped clear, flesh-melting venom.
"Tell Vane to skin her alive," Seraphine whispered, a dark, twisted grin spreading across her face. "I want her skull mounted on my desk by morning. No prophecy will steal my crown."
