"Wake up."
Elena pulled the thick duvet over her head, burying her face into the down pillow. "Five more minutes."
Kael stood beside the grand canopy bed, his broad frame casting a long, dark shadow in the dim morning light. His piercing eyes fixed on her tangled hair. "You'll be late."
"Late for what?"
"Your grandmother's birthday."
Elena sat bolt upright, the silk sheet slipping down her shoulders. Her pulse spiked instantly. "Oh my goodness!" She scrambled out of bed, her bare feet hitting the cold hardwood floor as she frantically looked around for her clothes. Kael watched her, silent and unbothered.
"You could have reminded me earlier!" she gasped, grabbing a dress from the chair.
"I did."
"When?"
"You were asleep."
"That doesn't count!"
A razor-thin, mocking smile tugged at Kael's lips. Elena glared at him before darting into the bathroom, slamming the door shut. Seconds later, the harsh rush of running water echoed through the suite. Kael shook his head, a quiet exhale escaping his chest. This woman was a chaotic storm and entirely unlike anyone he had ever permitted near him.
An hour later, they were navigating the bustling grid of the city. Elena forced their cab to pull up outside a dusty, quiet antique shop tucked between towering glass skyscrapers. Her grandmother despised cheap luxury; she craved history.
Browsing through rows of forgotten relics, Elena’s fingers brushed against a small, intricate bronze music box carved with delicate floral patterns.
"How much?" she asked the shopkeeper.
"Thirty dollars."
Elena smiled warmly. "I'll take it."
Kael stared down at the tarnished metal object in her hands. "You think the matriarch will love this?"
"She doesn't care about the price tag," Elena said softly, carefully resting the box inside a velvet-lined package. She looked up, her gaze locking onto his. "She cares about the heart behind it."
They hailed another taxi, leaving the quiet side street behind. Twenty minutes later, the cab ground to a halt before a gargantuan estate. The mansion was a colossal gothic fortress of white marble, framed by towering iron gates, roaring stone fountains, and manicured hedges.
Kael looked out the window at the staggering display of wealth. "This is your grandmother's house?"
"Yes." Elena’s voice dropped, losing its sharp edge. Her shoulders tensed.
Kael's sharp eyes caught the shift instantly. "You're nervous."
"A little."
"Don't be." His tone was smooth, devoid of doubt. "Everything will be fine." The steady, grounded depth of his voice instantly quieted the frantic beating of her heart.
Outside the iron gates, a steady stream of multi-million-dollar hypercars, pristine limousines, and sleek Ferraris lined up. Guests stepped onto the red carpet wearing diamond encrusted jewelry and bespoke designer gowns.
Then, their battered yellow taxi pulled into the lane.
A burly guard stepped forward, slamming his heavy palm onto the taxi's hood. "Stop! This isn't a charity kitchen. Get this junk out of here!"
Elena's jaw clenched. The humiliation burned in her throat as she pushed the door open, stepping out into the chilly air alongside Kael.
The guard scoffed, waving them away like pests. "You two. Turn around and walk."
Elena stepped closer, her eyes flashing like lit matches. "Marcus?"
The guard froze, his smug expression wavering. "You... remember me?"
"Do you want me to tell my grandmother how you greet her family?"
"Miss Elena, I"
"What is the meaning of this insolence?!" an authoritative voice bellowed. The villa's head butler rushed past the gates. The moment his eyes landed on Elena, every ounce of blood drained from his face. He turned on the guard, his eyes burning with fury. "Are you blind?!"
SLAP!
The sharp crack echoed across the driveway as the butler’s palm struck the guard’s face. The guard’s head snapped sideways, a red streak blooming across his cheek. "Hand in your badge tomorrow," the butler snarled. "You're fired."
"Yes, sir," the guard whimpered, dropping his head.
The butler immediately turned to Elena, bowing deeply at a ninety degree angle. "Please forgive the disrespect, Miss Elena. Welcome home."
Elena nodded stiffly, stepping through the gates. But high above them, perched at a third-story stained glass window, someone watched.
Clara, Elena’s cousin, swirled a glass of vintage champagne, a toxic, satisfied smile spreading across her lips. Clara had spent years suffocated by jealousy of Elena’s effortless beauty, her grace, and the absolute devotion she drew from men without even trying. Watching Elena arrive in a decaying taxi had been absolute bliss.
"Enjoy your little moment, cousin," Clara whispered, her eyes drifting down to Kael's towering frame and dangerous jawline. "Let's see how long your fake pride lasts."
Before stepping into the grand foyer, Elena caught Kael’s forearm, pulling him into the shadow of a marble pillar. "Wait."
Kael looked down at her small hand gripping his coat. "Ground rules?"
"Exactly," she whispered urgently, holding up one slender finger. "Rule one: don't say anything stupid. Rule two: don't start a physical fight." She raised a third finger. "Rule three: make our relationship look entirely real. And rule four: ignore the insults."
Kael’s eyes darkened with subtle amusement. "Understood." He paused, leaning down until his lips brushed the shell of her ear. "So I can kiss you?"
Elena’s face flushed crimson. "You pervert!"
"You said make it look real," Kael murmured, his voice a low rumble.
She shoved his chest, though her heart was hammering against her ribs. "Just behave!"
The grand ballroom was suffocating, dripping in gold chandeliers, opera music, and arrogance. The moment Elena stepped inside, her mother, Evelyn, glided over, her sharp eyes instantly locking onto Kael.
"Who is this peasant?" Evelyn demanded, her voice laced with disgust.
Elena held her head high. "My boyfriend."
"Boyfriend?" Evelyn’s lips curled in horror. "I forbid it."
Elena’s father, Arthur, stepped forward, pulling a sleek leather checkbook from his jacket. He didn't even look Kael in the eye. "Young man, leave my daughter immediately. I will write you a check for ten million dollars right now."
Elena gasped. "Dad!"
"Silence, Elena! You are promised to a powerful family," Arthur snapped.
"I am not marrying a cheating playboy!"
"You will obey this family!"
Before the argument could escalate, Kael stepped squarely in front of Elena, his towering shadow swallowing Arthur’s aggressive posture. His expression was cool, his voice calm. "I am sorry, sir, but ten million dollars cannot buy my absence. Nothing can stop me from loving your daughter."
Elena stared at Kael’s side profile, her breath catching in her throat. His voice sounded so terrifyingly sincere that a shiver ran down her spine.
Evelyn sneered. "Love? What can you offer her? Where do you work? What family name do you carry?"
Kael looked straight into Evelyn’s hostile eyes. "I don't have a job. I come from an ordinary family." He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes locking onto Elena with a intensity that made her knees go weak. "But I have her."
"Abominable!" Evelyn spat.
"Well, well, well," a sleek, arrogant voice drawled from behind them. Julian the wealthy heir her parents favored approached, wearing a custom velvet suit and holding a massive, gold-wrapped gift box. He smirked at Elena. "If it isn't my future bride."
Elena’s voice turned ice-cold. "We aren't close, Julian."
Julian’s smirk faltered as he finally turned to Kael. He scanned the stranger no luxury watch, no designer suit, ordinary clothes. Yet Kael’s raw power, broad shoulders, and striking, dangerous handsome face made Julian look like a child playing dress-up. An ugly surge of jealousy choked Julian.
"Who the hell are you?" Julian sneered, stepping aggressively into Kael's space. "You think a dog like you can stand beside a woman like her?"
Kael didn't blink. Instead, he casually slid his heavy, warm arm around Elena’s waist, pulling her flush against his chest. Elena stiffened, her breath hitching as his body heat enveloped her.
Kael leaned down, cupped her chin, and pressed his lips firmly against hers.
It wasn't a gentle peck. It was possessive, deep, and suffocatingly intimate kiss. Elena’s eyes widened, her hands gripping his lapels for balance as heat exploded through her veins. Remembering rule three, she sank into it, closing her eyes and kissing him back, her fingers tightening in his fabric.
Julian’s face turned purple. "You bastard!" he screamed, pulling back his fist to strike.
"ENOUGH!"
A sharp, commanding voice shattered the ballroom quiet.
At the top of the grand staircase stood the family matriarch ,,Grandmother. Her presence instantly crushed the room into silence. "This is my celebration. There will be no brawling like dogs."
Julian froze, lowering his fist, his body trembling with rage. He pointed a finger at Kael, whispering venomously, "You just wait. I will ruin you."
As the party resumed, the elite guests retreated to their social circles, pointedly ignoring Elena and Kael. The pair retreated to a quiet alcove near the velvet curtains, sipping sparkling water and eating tiny pastries.
Elena let out a long breath, cooling her burning cheeks. "At least it's peaceful over here."
Kael looked down at her. "For now."
"So, you two are hiding like cowards?" Clara’s voice dripped into their quiet sanctuary. She stepped up, her eyes mocking. "Such a pathetic display, Elena."
Before Elena could slice back, the massive mahogany doors at the main entrance crashed open.
The room went dead silent.
Two ethereal, suffocatingly beautiful women stepped inside, flanked by security.
The first wore a tailored black backless gown adorned with silver embroidery. Her sharp, dark eyes held the cold lethargy of a predator. She was Valeria Kane the ruthless heiress to the Kane underworld empire.
Beside her walked a woman in an ivory silk dress, a dazzling diamond necklace resting against her pale collarbone. She radiated absolute corporate royalty Sophia Brown, daughter of the mogul who owned the most powerful conglomerate in the country.
Gasps filled the air.
"That's Valeria Kane... she's dangerous!"
"And Sophia Brown! Her family owns half the city!"
The two goddesses walked down the center aisle, the crowd parting like the Red Sea. But halfway down the hall, both women stopped dead in their tracks.
Their eyes had locked onto Kael and Elena.
Valeria’s cold glare sharpened, her breath catching. Sophia’s elegant posture stiffened, her eyes widening in disbelief.
For three agonized seconds, neither woman moved. Then, in a terrifying unison, their voices whispered across the quiet room.
Valeria narrowed her eyes. "I want that man."
Sophia’s lips parted. "I want him."
Kael frowned, his brow furrowing as he leaned down toward Elena. "Who are they?"
Elena stared at the two terrifying women marching directly toward them, her pulse hammering against her ribs with jealousy. "I have no idea."
