CHAPTER 5: THE BLOOD BENEATH THE WAVES

1932 Words
The ocean floor did not bleed lightly. It tore open in ribbons of suffocating velvet blue, each pulse of Prince Kael’s heart pumping hot crimson into the freezing abyss. He was a hurricane forged in royal flesh, cutting through the abyssal currents like an unsheathed obsidian blade. Every stroke of his limbs tore through the crush of deep-sea pressure, yet his mind refused the agony. It was entirely consumed by a single, maddening image: a mortal woman with skin like sun-warmed silk and eyes that had dared to look through his soul. He did not understand the dark, jagged thread twisting inside his chest. He only knew that if a single hair on her head was harmed, he would tear the mortal realm down to its foundations. A violent, crushing shockwave slammed against his spine. Kael halted. The water around him boiled with ancient magic. Out of the ink black trench emerged six hulking leviathans of the royal elite. Their luminescent pearl and gold armor hummed with high tier defensive runes. Each carried a sea-god’s weapon, their gazes devoid of pity, locked onto their rogue prince. "My prince," the lead commander spoke, his voice booming through the water like grinding tectonic plates. "You will cease this madness and return to the palace. Immediately." Kael turned slowly. His ice-blue eyes glowed with dangerous, predatory fire. "By whose decree?" "Queen Seraphine’s." A cold, mocking sneer cut across Kael’s jaw. "Tell my mother that her leash snapped the moment she mistook my silence for submission." The commander’s face hardened into stone. "You mistake our courtesy for weakness, Your Highness. Return... or we will break you." "Break me?" Kael stepped into the open water, his aura flaring until the surrounding ocean trembled. "How dare a servant raise his chin to his master? You are nothing but royal dogs barking at the moon. Let us see if your teeth match your arrogance." "Take him!" The sea exploded into absolute chaos. The arrogant commander lunged first, his trident humming with fatal voltage. Before the weapon could touch him, Kael’s palm shot forward. BOOM! A localized hydraulic bomb erupted from Kael’s hand. The massive shockwave pulverized the commander’s golden chestplate, snapping bone and hurling him three hundred feet through the water until his body splintered an ancient coral spine. Crimson mist erupted from his maw, dissolving into the blue dark. "Traitors!" another guard roared, diving from above with a twin-headed battleaxe. Kael didn't even look up. He side-stepped with fluid grace, seized the warrior’s wrists, and twisted. A sickening CRACK echoed through the depths as the guard’s shoulders dislocated. Kael drove his knee upward into the man's sternum, shattering the armor and driving him mercilessly into the jagged seabed below. Two more charged, their royal spears thrusting in deadly synergy. Kael caught the first spearhead between his bare palms. His muscles swelled, magic flaring along his arms, and with a brutal twist SNAP! He drove the jagged, broken shaft through the second attacker's shoulder, ripping a guttural scream from the warrior's lungs. Blood choked the water, turning the battlefield into a warm, metallic fog. Yet, Seraphine’s lapdogs were relentless. The fifth warrior a behemoth wielding an ethereal sea-steel broadsword flanked Kael’s blind spot. Blades clashed. The pressure wave knocked away loose boulders, lighting up the trench in blinding gold and silver sparks. Kael slammed his forehead directly into the warrior’s visor, shattering the helm. But as he delivered a bone crushing kick to disable the beast, a cruel, jagged blade cut through his flank. Pain sharp, white hot, and intoxicating seared his flesh. Kael gasped, his blood blooming around him like dark roses in winter. He reached down, wrapped his fingers around the protruding spearhead in his ribs, and yanked it out without a flinch. The warrior who had struck him stumbled back, paralyzed by pure terror. Kael looked up through his soaked, dark hair. His gaze was no longer royal; it was demonic. "Is that all your queen taught you?" In a flash of pure, terrifying speed, Kael closed the distance, grabbed the warrior’s throat, and crushed his windpipe before tossing him aside like refuse. Reinforcements thundered from the dark abyss dozens of shadows closing in. Kael pressed a hand against his bleeding ribcage. His power was immense, but time was bleeding away faster than his body. Every second he wasted here was a second closer to her destruction. He didn't run out of fear; he fled out of desperate, consuming possession. Turning toward the distant, shimmering surface, Kael ignited his residual royal mana, shooting through the ocean currents like a bleeding comet, leaving a trail of royal blood for his pursuers to follow. Meanwhile, in the dim, damp alleyways of the mortal city... Rain slicked the cracked pavement outside Elena’s run-down apartment building. A dozen low level street thugs sat on hood covers and rusty stoops, flicking flick blades and puffing cheap cigarettes. At the center of them sat the local kingpin a burly man with a golden tooth, resting his heavily bandaged leg on a plastic crate. "Bring me that little w***e," the kingpin spat, tapping his phone against his knee with cruel excitement. "She thinks because some fancy bastard broke my knee last month, she’s untouchable in my territory? Tonight, she learns who owns her body, her rent, and her life." His lieutenants chuckled darkly, cracking their knuckles as they approached the building's metal entrance door. "Kick it in," the boss ordered. Before the lead thug's boot could even touch the frame BOOM! The entire iron door exploded outward in a violent shower of shrapnel. Three men were hit instantly, their ribs caving as they were hurled thirty feet across the alley, smashing into brick walls like broken ragdolls. The kingpin dropped his phone, his golden tooth glinting in the pale streetlights. "What the hell—?!" Out of the swirling smoke stepped four looming figures. They wore tailored, pitch-black suits that seemed to swallow the ambient light. Their complexions were ghastly, porcelain-white, their eyes completely void of light—pitch-black pools of cold death. They moved without making a sound, their aura suffocating, metallic, and heavy. The Shadow Guards. Seraphine’s elite surface hunters. "Who the f**k are you creeps?" the kingpin barked, trying to stand on his good leg, raising a heavy brass knuckled fist. "This is my block! I've buried men bigger than you!" One of his lieutenants nervously leaned in. "Boss... the last guy who crossed us was the one who shattered your kneecap..." "Shut up!" the kingpin screamed, his face flushing with dark humiliation. "I slipped on wet asphalt that day! Kill these freaks!" The thugs charged with pipes, knives, and bats. It wasn't a fight; it was a slaughter of absolute humiliation. A thug swung a crowbar at the nearest Shadow Guard. The guard didn't even blink. He caught the steel bar with two fingers, snapped it in half like a dry twig, and backhanded the thug with enough force to spin him twice through the air before he crashed face-first onto the concrete, teeth scattering like dice. Another thug tried to stab a guard from behind. The entity effortlessly swiveled, grabbed the man’s throat, and slammed his skull directly through the windshield of a parked sedan. In less than twenty seconds, eleven grown men were left screaming, groaning, and bleeding in the filth of the gutter. Bone fragments glittered under the yellow streetlamp. The kingpin fell to his knees, his pants soaking in dirty rainwater, his arrogance instantly turning to pathetic, trembling terror. "P-please... take my money! Take my car! Don't" A Shadow Guard didn't even glance at him. He stepped on the kingpin's bad knee. A sickening crunch echoed through the alley, followed by a ear-splitting scream that was abruptly cut short as the guard kicked him unconscious into a pile of trash. The mysterious figures turned their hollow gaze toward the third-floor apartment window. Inside the cramped, shadowy living room, Elena pressed her back against the cold wall, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Outside, the horrifying sounds of bone snapping and metal crumpling had given way to an eerie, unnatural silence. "God, please..." she whispered, her voice trembling, tears blurring her vision. She fumbled with her smartphone, her thumb frantically tapping the screen. Emergency Services: 911. NO SIGNAL. "No, no, no! Come on!" She held the phone to the ceiling, pacing frantically. SEARCHING FOR NETWORK... SIGNAL BLOCKED. The air inside her room suddenly turned freezing cold. Her breath bloomed into white frost. The lights flickered violently before exploding in showers of tiny orange sparks, plunging her small apartment into pitch-black terror. Then came the knock. BOOM! The reinforced wooden door bowed inward, dust pouring from the hinges. Elena squealed in absolute horror, dropping her phone. She turned and sprinted into her bedroom, slamming the door shut, locking it with shaking hands, and diving into the heavy oak wardrobe in the corner. She squeezed herself between her winter coats, wrapping her arms around her knees, pressing both trembling hands over her mouth to muffle her violent sobs. BOOM! The bedroom lock shattered. Heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed over the hardwood floor. Step. Step. Step. Elena closed her eyes, hot tears washing down her flushed cheeks. Please, God.... wherever you are... please... The wardrobe doors were ripped off their tracks with brutal, effortless force. Elena screamed as an ice-cold, iron-like hand clamped around her ankle and dragged her roughly out onto the floor. Splinters bit into her thighs and hands. "Get off me! Get away from me!" she shrieked, kicking wildly, her nails clawing at the guard’s immaculate black sleeve. The Shadow Guard didn't flinch. He raised his free hand and struck her across the cheek a cold, heavy slap that sent her head spinning, filling her mouth with the bitter taste of copper. She lay on her side, dizzy, gasping, her vision swimming with dark spots. The guard stood over her pathetic, shivering form. He pulled a curved, black-steel dagger from his belt. The blade hummed with a sick, purple light. Elena looked up into those hollow, lifeless eyes. The humiliation of her powerlessness cut deeper than any blade. She was just a mortal insect to these monsters. The guard raised the dagger high, aiming straight for her throat. Elena squeezed her eyes shut, accepting her fate. SWISH! A blinding, icy shockwave blew the apartment windows inward, shattering every glass pane into a million falling diamonds. A agonizing, gurgling sound filled the room. The Shadow Guard was frozen, his raised arm trembling. Dripping through the center of his chest was a glowing, ethereal sea-trident made of condensed oceanic force. With a sickening wrench, the trident was yanked backward, hauling the entity off his feet and hurling him violently out the window, crashing down into the alley below. Standing in the shattered doorway, drenched in seawater and dark royal blood, his chest heaving with murderous, possessive rage, was Prince Kael. His eyes locked onto Elena’s bruised cheek, and the temperature in the room plummeted .
