The first rays of dawn painted the sky in bruising shades of indigo and violet as Elena reached her tiny apartment.
Elena.
Her name felt foreign, a thin paper shield against the horrors of the night. Her trembling fingers fumbled with the key, the brass scraping against the lock with a sound that sent panic shooting down her spine. Every shadow lurking in the stairwell morphed into the cruel man from the alleyway, every creak of the floorboards sounding like his heavy footsteps coming to drag her back into the dark.
When the door finally clicked shut, the illusion of safety shattered her resolve. Elena sank against the cold wood, sliding to the floor as her chest heaved.
"I'm safe..." she whispered. The lie tasted like copper and ash on her tongue.
She forced herself up, her joints protesting with a dull, throb-like ache. Dusty stains ruined her clothes, but it was the ghost of hands on her skin that made her flesh crawl. She needed the water to drown the feeling.
Warm streams poured over her in the cramped bathroom, filling the air with suffocating steam. Elena closed her eyes, letting the heat scald away the terror. But as she wiped the moisture from her skin, her breath caught in her throat.
Dark, cruel bruises bloomed across her flesh purple and blue blossoms blooming over her delicate wrists and the pale slope of her shoulders.
"I... don't remember these," she breathed, tracing a mark with a trembling finger.
As her skin vibrated from the touch, something small slipped from her damp hair, striking the tiles with a sharp, metallic clink.
Elena knelt, her heart hammering against her ribs.
It was a brilliant blue scale, resting in the pool of water like a fallen star. It fit within the palm of her hand, its surface shimmering with silver patterns that rippled like moonlight dancing across a dark sea. When her fingers brushed its cool edge, a sudden, searing warmth surged through her veins, sending a shuddering wave of electricity straight to her core.
The scale emitted a brief, ethereal glow before dimming back to a quiet glimmer.
"What are you...?"
Her breathing hitched. She scoured her memory, clawing at the blank slate of the previous night. Nothing. Just an abyss of missing time. Yet, amidst the void, one silhouette burned with terrifying clarity: a man. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Possessed of a dark, unstoppable violence that had cut through the night like a blade.
She couldn't remember his face it had been swallowed by the dark but the phantom sensation of his breath against her neck left her shuddering, a hot, forbidden ache pulsing beneath her skin.
Wrapping the scale in a clean cloth, she hid it deep within her bedside drawer, her hands shaking. She didn't know that the tiny piece of armor would tear her world apart.
Far beyond the human realm, where the light of the sun died in the crushing blue depths, a lone figure stood upon a jagged cliff.
Prince Kael looked out over the abyss, his bare chest glistening under the faint luminescence of the deep. Without a word, he plunged into the dark.
The ocean embraced him like an absolute ruler. He glided effortlessly, cutting through the current faster than any living creature. Glowing schools of fish scattered like stardust in his wake; towering coral forests stretched into the gloom, and ancient sea serpents stirred in their sleep beside forgotten ruins.
At the heart of the oceanic trench rested a city carved from black coral, pearl, and living crystal.
The Ocean Kingdom.
As Kael approached the colossal gates, two heavy tridents crossed to bar his path. Captain Darius lowered his head, his eyes burning with forced deference.
"Your Highness," Darius said, his voice underwater thunder.
Beside him, Commander Ronan spoke with tight respect. "Her Majesty has ordered us to escort you to her immediately. Do not make this difficult."
Kael remained silent, his golden eyes cold enough to freeze the warm currents. He offered a single, icy nod. "Lead the way."
The palace corridors glittered with embedded pearls, but the luxury was a gilded cage. Servants scattered like minnows the moment Kael walked past, terrified to meet the gaze of the exiled prince.
The massive doors of the Empress Chamber parted with a heavy groan.
Upon a throne carved from jagged black coral sat a woman of devastating, malevolent beauty. Her lower half was a shimmering, iridescent mermaid's tail, but her crown was a horror: dozens of living, black snakes twisted through her long silver hair, their golden eyes slit, their jaws snapping as they caught Kael’s scent.
Queen Seraphine.
"Kael," she purred, her voice dripping with poisonous sweetness that masked a viper's strike. "Did I not forbid you from crawling among the filthy humans?"
Kael stood at the center of the grand hall, unbothered by the weight of her glare.
Seraphine rose, her tail sweeping over the black marble. "You disgrace your bloodline by slinking off to their pathetic, dry world. You will remain confined to your deep chambers for two months." She paused, a cruel, triumphant smile curving her ruby lips. "And immediately afterward, you will marry Lady Nerissa. She is the Prime Minister’s daughter, the crown jewel of this kingdom, and far more than a disgraced prince deserves."
Silence fell over the court like a heavy shroud. Attendants held their breath.
Kael’s eyes narrowed into slits of liquid gold. "My answer is no."
Low gasps echoed through the hall.
Seraphine’s smile died, replaced by an ugly, darkening rage. "What did you say to me?"
Kael took a deliberate step forward, his aura flaring so intensely that the water around him rippled with sudden heat. "You hear me clearly, Seraphine. You are not my mother."
The insults hit the royal court like a physical blow.
"You were nothing more than my late father's concubine," Kael continued, his voice reverberating through the crystal pillars like an earthquake. "A desperate creature who wormed her way into his bed while my mother’s body was barely cold. I am the rightful heir to this throne. You are a usurper wearing a dead king's crown, and you have no right to decide my future or who I touch."
Seraphine's face contorted into a monstrous mask of fury. The serpents in her hair hissed wildly, snapping at the air as humiliation burned red hot down her neck. To be stripped naked of her dignity before her nobles by the boy she sought to break was an unbearable insult.
"Silence!" she shrieked, the sound cracking the fine glass ornaments nearby. "You insolent, bastard child! I am the Queen! I am the absolute rule of this sea! You will bow, or I will break your spine!"
She thrust a trembling, clawed finger toward him. "Guards! Seize him! Strip him of his rank and drag him to the dark cells!"
Over a dozen elite warriors surged forward, their tridents gleaming with killer intent.
Captain Darius struck first, thrusting his heavy weapon straight for Kael’s chest. Kael didn't even draw a blade. He sidestepped with fluid grace, the prongs grazing his shoulder, and delivered a brutal palm strike directly to Darius’s sternum.
Bang!
The impact sent shockwaves through the water. Darius crashed backward into a solid marble pillar, the stone cracking upon impact as he slouched, unconscious.
Commander Ronan charged from his blind spot, angling a serrated dagger for Kael's flank. Kael spun on his heel, his elbow driving back with sickening precision.
Crack.
Ronan’s ribs shattered. The commander dropped to his knees, gasping for air as blood bloomed in the water around his lips.
"Useless fools!" Seraphine screamed from her throne, her knuckles white as she gripped the armrests. "Kill him if you must! Just bring me his head!"
Three elite guards closed in simultaneously, their spears forming an inescapable wall of steel. Kael caught the center spearhead with his bare palm, stopping the thrust mid-air. With a flex of his forearms, he twisted the metal.
Snap!
The reinforced shaft splintered into pieces. Kael swept his leg in a wide arc, the sheer force of the water pressure knocking the second guard off his feet, before driving his fist upward into the third guard’s jaw. The iron helmet shattered like glass, and the soldier went limp, floating weightlessly upward.
The court descended into utter madness. Servants shrieked, scrambling behind towering coral columns to escape the c*****e. Pearls tore from the walls, rolling across the floor as bodies slammed into delicate decor.
Kael moved like a violent storm beneath the wave. Every strike was lethal, efficient, and horrifyingly beautiful. He ducked under a swinging broadsword, snatched the wielder by his throat, and slammed him into another charging guard. A third soldier attempted to impale him from above, but Kael caught him by his armor, spinning him through the water before launching him headfirst across the long banquet table, shattering fine crystal goblets into dust.
Strike after strike. Bone snapping against bone. The royal guard the proudest force in the Ocean Kingdom was being dismantled by one man with his bare hands.
Within minutes, the brutal symphony ceased.
Fifteen elite warriors lay scattered across the ruined marble floor, groaning in agony, pooling crimson into the clear sea. Not a single man remained standing.
An agonizing, suffocating silence settled over the chamber.
Kael stood in the absolute center of the destruction. His chest rose and fell in slow, controlled rhythms. A single drop of blood floated from his knuckles, drifting away into the tide. He adjusted his collar, his golden eyes locking onto the throne.
Queen Seraphine slowly stood up, her jaw tight, her chest heaving with a mixture of raw fury and unprecedented terror. For the first time since she had stolen the crown, horror replaced her arrogance. She stared down at the young prince unbroken, unbothered, and entirely lethal.
The snakes in her hair hissed weakly, cowering against her scalp as if sensing the absolute predator standing before them.
Kael tilted his head, his gaze piercing her soul, leaving her completely exposed before her trembling court.
"Try to command me again, Stepmother," Kael whispered, his voice slicing through the stillness like a dagger. "And it won't be my scale I leave behind next time. It will be your head."
