I finish my last rides right before lunch, and briefly, I think about inviting Caleb out for a sandwich or something, but he’s already gone.
“He’s somewhere on the property,” Sam says as he helps Tomas shovel Grace’s stall. “Don’t know exactly where. Why?”
“Thought I’d start going over what he’ll need to look for in their next rider.” It feels so weird to say. “I can catch up with him later.”
Sam nods, smiling. He’s been smiling ever since I pitched the idea of us leaving for Adele Mar’s team. He likes the farm, even gets along with the Colonel way better than most people, but I think he’s been ready for a change. Or maybe he just couldn’t resist the opportunity. Either way, Sam’s on board. It’s a huge relief.
