The whole way home on the bus, Jay sat next to Lisa, snacking on lihing mui and salty plum crackseed. “Jay,” Lisa said, “who do you think is the smartest in our class?” He dug another seed out of her bag. “You, of course!” “Oh, I don’t know,” she simpered. “There are a lot of really smart kids at Ridgemont.” “Yeah, but you knew all the answers in history.” Jay stretched and flexed his muscles. She tittered. “You were there?” “I was sitting right behind you.” “Oh, that’s soooo embarrassing!” Jay rolled his shoulders and pumped up his arms. “No way! It’s awesome to be the best.” “Like you and surfing!” “I’m not that good,” Jay said, faking bashful. “Yes, you are! I bet you win the Lauele Invitational this weekend!
