Chapter 11 - The Heart of Astralis
Part I - Revelations of the Beginning
The first thing Fin noticed was the silence.
Not the kind born after a battle.
Not the uneasy silence before another attack.
This silence felt... sacred.
The golden explosion that had engulfed the Star Vault only moments ago had disappeared, replaced by a vast stillness that wrapped around everyone like a blanket. Dust floated lazily through the air, suspended in shafts of silver and gold light pouring from cracks in the ruined ceiling. Time itself seemed reluctant to move.
Fin stood beside Headmaster Caelum, the Crownblade still warm in her trembling hands.
She looked down.
The shattered floor beneath them had transformed.
The fractured marble was no longer broken stone but an intricate mosaic of glowing constellations stretching farther than the eye could see. Every step she took caused tiny stars beneath her feet to ripple outward like water disturbed by a pebble.
"...What is this place?"
Her voice echoed softly.
No one answered.
Not because they didn't want to.
Because none of them knew.
Even Orion—who had spent decades searching for the forgotten history of Astralis—stared at the glowing floor with quiet disbelief.
"...Impossible."
It was the first time Fin had heard uncertainty in the Shadow King's voice.
"The records never mentioned..."
His sentence faded into silence.
Slowly, the darkness surrounding Noctis withdrew several feet, hissing as though burned.
For the first time since emerging from the Star Vault...
The Hollow King looked uncomfortable.
His golden eyes scanned the glowing chamber, no longer filled with amusement but caution.
"I wondered..."
he murmured.
"...if it still existed."
The chamber continued changing.
The broken walls of the Star Vault dissolved into shimmering particles of light.
Collapsed pillars straightened.
Ancient cracks vanished.
Flowers of silver crystal bloomed where piles of rubble had rested only moments earlier.
The ruined palace wasn't rebuilding.
It was remembering.
Memories older than kingdoms seeped from the stone itself.
The forgotten heart of Astralis had awakened.
Fin reached out, gently brushing her fingertips against a nearby column.
The stone felt warm.
Alive.
The instant her skin made contact...
The walls lit up.
Murals hidden beneath centuries of dust illuminated one after another.
Unlike the faded paintings from earlier, these were vivid.
Moving.
Almost real.
Children laughed through enchanted images.
Knights trained beneath crystal trees.
Women in flowing silver robes walked among ordinary villagers without guards or servants.
No one bowed.
No one knelt.
They smiled.
Together.
"It wasn't just a kingdom..."
Zanne whispered.
"It was a home."
Without realizing it, he had stepped beside Fin.
His broken glasses still hung crookedly from one ear, making him look strangely vulnerable.
She smiled faintly.
"You should probably fix those."
He looked embarrassed.
"I've been meaning to."
"You've been saying that for three years."
"...That's fair."
Priston looked between them before folding his arms dramatically.
"Really?"
"You two are flirting now?"
"We're standing next to an ancient evil."
Fin rolled her eyes.
"We're not flirting."
"No?"
Priston smirked.
"I've never looked at someone else's broken glasses like that."
Fin felt warmth creep into her cheeks.
"I was being nice."
"Mhm."
Priston nodded exaggeratedly.
"Very nice."
Even Selene covered her mouth to hide a laugh.
The tension eased.
Only for a moment.
But in a place that had known nothing except war for centuries...
Even one moment of laughter mattered.
Headmaster Caelum watched them quietly.
His tired smile deepened.
"They remind me of us."
Orion stood beside him.
"They're louder."
"We were loud."
"You challenged me to a duel because I beat you at chess."
"You cheated."
"I was winning."
"You distracted me with tea."
Orion sighed.
"You've held onto that story for forty years."
"It was good tea."
"It was terrible tea."
Selene blinked.
"...Is this how legendary heroes always argue?"
Priston whispered,
"I kind of love it."
The laughter faded as the chamber trembled again.
Not violently.
Rhythmically.
Like a heartbeat.
Thump.
...
Thump.
...
Thump.
The sound came from beneath the glowing floor.
Each pulse sent waves of silver light through the chamber.
The Crownblade responded instantly.
Its sapphire core brightened.
The sword vibrated gently in Fin's hands.
Noctis slowly turned toward the center of the chamber.
His expression darkened.
"It wakes."
The heartbeat grew louder.
The glowing constellations beneath their feet shifted, rearranging themselves into an enormous circular seal.
At its center appeared a symbol Fin had seen only once before.
In her dreams.
A seven-pointed star enclosed by intertwined vines.
The same symbol carved into the pendant her adoptive mother had hidden beneath the cottage floor.
The same emblem stitched into the blanket she had been wrapped in as a baby.
The Starborn Crest.
The floor began opening.
Not breaking.
Opening.
Like flower petals unfolding beneath the morning sun.
Stone folded inward without sound.
Silver mist drifted upward.
Then...
They saw it.
No one spoke.
Words simply weren't enough.
Suspended in the center of a vast underground sanctuary floated a crystal unlike anything any of them had ever imagined.
It wasn't large.
Perhaps the size of a human heart.
Yet within it...
Entire galaxies swirled.
Tiny stars were born.
Lived.
Died.
Then were born again.
Every color imaginable shimmered beneath its transparent surface.
Blue.
Silver.
Gold.
Crimson.
Even colors Fin couldn't describe.
It pulsed gently.
In perfect rhythm with the heartbeat filling the chamber.
"...The Aether Heart."
Orion removed his crown.
Not because he was ordered to.
Because he couldn't bring himself to remain covered before it.
Headmaster Caelum bowed his head.
Selene followed.
Even Noctis became still.
Not in respect.
In hatred.
Deep.
Ancient.
Hatred.
The Hollow King's smile disappeared completely.
"So..."
he whispered.
"...my old enemy still breathes."
Fin couldn't take her eyes off the crystal.
She felt...
Drawn to it.
Every heartbeat echoed inside her own chest.
She took one step forward.
Then another.
No one stopped her.
The Aether Heart glowed brighter with every step she took.
The silver mist swirled around her ankles.
Tiny lights danced around her hair.
She reached the edge of the floating crystal.
It felt strangely familiar.
Like coming home after forgetting where home had been.
A soft voice echoed through the sanctuary.
Gentle.
Kind.
Timeless.
"Fin."
She froze.
That voice...
She knew it.
Not from dreams.
From childhood.
From lullabies sung beside a fireplace.
"...Mom?"
The silver light gathered before her.
Slowly taking shape.
Not a ghost.
Not an illusion.
A memory.
A woman appeared, dressed in flowing silver robes embroidered with stars.
Long silver hair cascaded over her shoulders.
Her blue eyes were identical to Fin's.
Warm.
Gentle.
Filled with love.
Queen Elara.
Fin's breath caught.
She looked exactly as she had in every dream.
Except now...
She smiled.
"My little star."
The words shattered every wall Fin had built around her heart.
"...Mother."
Her voice broke.
"I..."
Before she could finish...
She burst into tears.
Not quiet tears.
Years of confusion.
Loneliness.
Questions.
Grief.
Everything she had buried since childhood came rushing to the surface.
"I missed you..."
she sobbed.
"So much..."
The memory of Queen Elara stepped closer.
Though her form was made only of light...
She gently cupped Fin's face.
And somehow...
Fin felt warmth.
"I know."
"I'm sorry I couldn't stay."
"You left me."
"I did."
"Why?"
Her voice cracked.
"Why didn't you come back?"
Tears shimmered in Elara's own eyes.
"Because mothers don't always get to choose the stories they leave behind."
Fin shook her head.
"I don't understand."
"I know."
"You will."
The Queen brushed a tear from Fin's cheek.
"But first..."
She glanced toward the others.
Toward Orion.
Toward Noctis.
Toward the Heart itself.
"...you must learn the truth."
The sanctuary darkened.
The crystal blazed like a newborn star.
Ancient memories—older than any kingdom—began awakening within the Heart of Astralis.
And for the first time...
The true history of the Ability Wielders was ready to be told.
Queen Elara turned toward the Heart of Astralis.
The crystal answered.
Its gentle pulse grew stronger until the entire sanctuary glowed like the night sky had descended beneath the earth. Tiny stars drifted through the air, circling everyone present. One landed on Priston's shoulder. Another rested on Zanne's sleeve before dissolving into harmless silver dust.
No one dared to move.
Even Noctis remained silent.
For the first time since they had met him, the Hollow King looked... cautious.
Elara's gaze swept across the sanctuary.
"When history is written by survivors," she said softly, "the truth is often buried beside the dead."
The crystal behind her rippled.
The sanctuary vanished.
Fin blinked.
She was no longer standing inside the Star Vault.
Instead...
She stood on a grassy hill beneath a sky unlike any she had ever seen.
Three moons hung overhead.
Countless stars shimmered so brightly they painted the rivers silver.
The air smelled of flowers and rain.
"What..."
Priston whispered.
"...Is this another illusion?"
Zanne slowly knelt, running his fingers through the grass.
"It feels real."
"It isn't an illusion," Elara answered.
"It is memory."
She looked toward the horizon.
"Long before abilities existed... this was our world."
Far in the distance stood a magnificent city.
Not Astralis.
Not Academia.
Something much older.
Its towers were carved from crystal that reflected the heavens themselves. Rivers floated through the sky like ribbons of light. Massive trees stretched above the clouds, their glowing leaves illuminating everything beneath them.
Selene stared in awe.
"...It's beautiful."
"It was."
Elara's smile carried unmistakable sadness.
"We called it Elysion."
People filled the streets below.
Children chased glowing birds.
Merchants laughed with customers.
Artists painted stars onto enormous canvases.
There were no weapons.
No walls.
No soldiers.
No kings.
"They don't have abilities," Fin noticed.
"They don't need them."
Elara replied.
"We lived in harmony with Aether."
"The Heart gave life."
"It healed."
"It created."
"It asked for nothing in return."
The scene shifted.
A young boy sat beneath one of the great crystal trees.
Unlike the others...
He was alone.
He watched the happy crowds from a distance.
Ignored.
Forgotten.
His clothes were torn.
His expression empty.
Fin frowned.
"...Who's that?"
Elara didn't answer immediately.
The boy slowly looked up.
His eyes...
Were golden.
Noctis.
Before the darkness.
Before the Hollow.
Before everything.
"He wasn't born evil."
Elara said quietly.
"No one is."
The young Noctis watched families laughing together.
A little girl ran toward him carrying a flower.
She smiled brightly.
"For you."
He looked surprised.
"...Me?"
She nodded enthusiastically.
"You always sit alone."
"So..."
She held out the flower.
"...you don't have to anymore."
The young boy hesitated.
Then...
He smiled.
A genuine smile.
Small.
Shy.
Hopeful.
Fin felt her chest tighten.
"He looks..."
"So lonely."
"He was."
Elara answered.
"Noctis was an orphan."
"He never knew his parents."
"He never believed he belonged anywhere."
The vision continued.
The little girl returned every day.
Sometimes she brought flowers.
Sometimes books.
Sometimes nothing at all.
They laughed together.
Played together.
For a while...
The lonely boy wasn't lonely anymore.
Priston folded his arms.
"So what happened?"
The answer came from behind them.
"I buried her."
Everyone turned.
Noctis.
He was standing only a few feet away.
Watching the memory unfold.
His golden eyes never left the little girl.
"I remember..."
His voice was barely audible.
"...every single day."
The chamber became silent again.
Fin looked between Elara and Noctis.
"...She died."
Elara nodded.
"A sickness spread across Elysion."
"It was unlike anything we had ever seen."
"The Heart couldn't heal it."
The memory darkened.
The once-vibrant city became quiet.
Homes emptied.
Laughter disappeared.
The little girl lay in bed, her breathing shallow.
Young Noctis sat beside her, refusing to leave.
"You promised..."
His voice trembled.
"...we'd see the stars together."
She smiled weakly.
"We still will."
"I'm scared."
"So am I."
She reached for his hand.
"When I'm gone..."
He shook his head violently.
"No."
"Listen."
She squeezed his fingers.
"Don't be alone again."
"I won't let you leave."
"You can't stop everything."
"I'll find a way."
"You always say that."
"I mean it."
The little girl's smile faded.
Her hand slowly slipped from his.
The room fell silent.
Young Noctis stared.
Waiting.
Refusing to believe.
He waited until sunrise.
Then sunset.
Then another sunrise.
She never opened her eyes again.
Fin wiped away tears she hadn't realized were falling.
"He loved her."
"Yes."
Elara whispered.
"He loved her more than anything."
The memory shifted once more.
The young boy stood before the Aether Heart.
Older now.
Angrier.
His face streaked with tears.
"Bring her back."
The Heart remained silent.
He fell to his knees.
"I'll give you anything."
Nothing.
His fists slammed against the crystal.
"PLEASE!"
The sky trembled.
Still...
The Heart remained silent.
Slowly...
Something answered instead.
Darkness seeped from beneath the earth.
A whisper.
Soft.
Comforting.
You don't have to lose anyone again...
Young Noctis looked toward the shadows.
"...Who are you?"
A friend.
I can return what the light refuses.
Elara closed her eyes.
"That was the first whisper of the Void."
"It never lies completely."
"It only tells the truth people are desperate to hear."
The darkness embraced the grieving boy.
Not violently.
Tenderly.
Like someone comforting a crying child.
Priston looked away.
"...That's..."
"Horrible."
Zanne nodded.
"He wasn't corrupted because he wanted power."
"He was grieving."
"Exactly."
Elara answered.
"The Void doesn't search for the strongest."
"It searches for the broken."
Fin's grip tightened around the Crownblade.
She suddenly remembered every whisper she'd heard inside the Vault.
Every regret.
Every fear.
It had tried to reach her the same way.
Not through hatred.
Through pain.
The memory accelerated.
Years passed in moments.
The young boy became a man.
The darkness grew with him.
Cities fell.
Friends disappeared.
The sky itself seemed to lose its light.
Finally...
He stood alone.
The last survivor of Elysion.
Surrounded by silence.
Noctis watched his own past without expression.
"I kept my promise."
He said quietly.
"I was never alone again."
Behind him...
Millions of shadowy figures stood motionless.
The Hollow.
Every person he had failed to save.
Every person the Void had "returned."
Not alive.
Not dead.
Empty.
Fin slowly turned toward him.
Her heart ached.
She understood now.
Not because she agreed with him.
Because she finally saw him.
"You wanted to save everyone."
Noctis met her gaze.
"I still do."
"By turning them into Hollow?"
"They no longer suffer."
"They no longer laugh."
"They no longer cry."
"They no longer lose the people they love."
His voice remained painfully calm.
"Tell me, Starborn..."
His golden eyes searched hers.
"How many people must die before your precious hope becomes cruelty?"
Fin couldn't answer.
Not immediately.
Because part of her understood the question.
She had already lost her birth parents.
Nearly lost her adoptive family.
Nearly lost Priston.
Nearly lost everyone she cared about.
If she had possessed the power to erase pain...
Would she have been tempted?
Her silence lingered.
Then...
A hand rested gently on her shoulder.
Zanne.
"You don't have to answer him."
He said quietly.
She looked up.
His gray eyes were gentle behind his cracked glasses.
"Because you're asking the wrong question."
Noctis tilted his head.
Zanne met his gaze without fear.
"The question isn't whether pain should exist."
"It's whether love is still worth choosing... even when pain comes with it."
Silence.
Priston stepped beside Fin.
He grinned despite the seriousness of the moment.
"I've gotten beat up about six times since I enrolled here."
Fin laughed softly through her tears.
"Only six?"
"Okay..."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Maybe twelve."
Selene smirked.
"It was definitely more than twelve."
Priston ignored her.
"My point is..."
He looked directly at Noctis.
"If I knew I'd get hurt..."
He glanced toward Fin.
"...I'd still choose these idiots."
Fin's eyes watered again.
"i***t?"
"The biggest one."
He smiled.
"But you're my idiot."
She shoved his shoulder.
"You ruin emotional moments."
"It's a gift."
For the first time...
A tiny crack appeared in Noctis's composure.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Doubt.
And somewhere deep within the Heart of Astralis...
Another pulse echoed.
Stronger than before.
As if the Heart itself had been listening.
