Chapter 10.3 - 10.4 - The Fallen Academy
Part III — The Last Lesson of a Headmaster
The laughter stopped.
It didn't fade.
It ended.
As though someone had snuffed out every sound in existence.
Noctis stood motionless in the center of the ruined Star Vault, his golden eyes no longer filled with amusement but with something far more dangerous.
Respect.
The darkness surrounding him slowly changed.
Until now, it had flowed around him like smoke.
Now...
It obeyed him.
The black tendrils retreated into the fractured earth before rising again—not as vines, but as towering pillars of darkness, twisting together until they resembled enormous warriors clad in black armor.
Each one carried a weapon.
A spear.
A sword.
An axe.
A bow.
There were twelve of them.
Faceless.
Silent.
Waiting.
Fin instinctively tightened her grip on the Crownblade.
"...What are those?"
Orion's expression hardened.
"They're called the Hollow Knights."
Priston frowned.
"They look... alive."
"They were."
The answer came quietly.
"They were once the greatest Ability Wielders of the First Age."
Noctis smiled.
"They served kings."
"They protected families."
"They dreamed of peaceful tomorrows."
He slowly raised one hand.
"They simply chose eternity."
The Hollow Knights lifted their weapons simultaneously.
"The Void doesn't create monsters."
Noctis continued.
"It merely gives desperate people another choice."
His smile widened.
"Most accept."
Above the Underground
Academia was losing.
The eastern courtyard had become a battlefield.
Students who had trained together only days before now fought desperately beside their professors.
The academy banners burned.
The once-pristine gardens had become fields of shattered stone.
Third-year students formed defensive circles around the younger classes.
Some were crying.
Others refused to retreat despite their injuries.
Because there was nowhere left to run.
A second-year girl trembled as Shadow Legion soldiers approached.
She raised trembling hands, trying to summon flames.
Nothing happened.
"I..."
Her voice broke.
"I can't..."
One of the soldiers charged.
Before his sword could fall—
A streak of blue lightning tore through the battlefield.
The soldier was launched across the courtyard.
Another.
Then another.
A familiar voice rang through the smoke.
"Seriously?"
"You people call yourselves soldiers?"
Lyra landed between the frightened students, blue lightning dancing around her fists.
Her academy jacket was torn.
Her braid had come loose.
Blood ran down one side of her forehead.
Yet she grinned exactly as she always had.
"You picked the wrong school."
The younger students stared.
"L-Lyra..."
She looked over her shoulder and winked.
"What?"
"You thought I'd let you fail your exams and die?"
A few nervous laughs escaped the students.
"Good."
She rolled her shoulders.
"Now stand up."
"If you're scared..."
She smiled.
"Stand anyway."
Back in the Star Vault
The Hollow Knights attacked.
Not one by one.
All at once.
The first knight swung a colossal axe toward Orion.
The king blocked with his spear.
The impact cracked the stone beneath his feet.
A second knight fired a black arrow toward Selene.
She rolled beneath it, the projectile embedding itself in the wall before dissolving the ancient stone into ash.
A third charged directly at Fin.
"Incoming!"
Priston shouted.
He intercepted the knight with a powerful swing.
Steel met shadow.
The collision sent both fighters skidding backward.
"...That's..."
Priston's arms trembled from the force.
"...way stronger than I expected."
The knight never spoke.
It simply attacked again.
Fighting Together
Fin's heartbeat steadied.
She remembered every lesson Professor Seraphine had drilled into her class.
"A battle isn't won by the strongest fighter."
"It's won by the team that trusts each other the longest."
She glanced toward her friends.
Without saying a word...
They understood.
Zanne raised two fingers.
A glowing barrier appeared behind Priston—not to protect him, but to redirect his momentum.
Priston pushed off the barrier like a springboard.
He launched himself over the Hollow Knight's head.
"Your turn!"
Fin was already moving.
The Crownblade traced a brilliant arc through the darkness.
This time she wasn't fighting alone.
She knew where Priston would move.
She knew where Zanne's barriers would appear.
She trusted Selene to cover the blind spots.
For the first time...
They moved like a single unit.
The Hollow Knight swung.
Priston ducked.
Fin slid beneath the attack.
The Crownblade pierced the knight's chest.
Silver light erupted outward.
The Hollow Knight froze.
Tiny cracks spread across its body.
Then—
It shattered into thousands of glowing fragments.
The chamber fell silent for half a heartbeat.
Priston blinked.
"We actually did it."
Selene allowed herself a small smile.
"Don't celebrate yet."
The fragments on the ground began trembling.
"...Oh."
Priston sighed.
"Of course."
The pieces floated back together.
The Hollow Knight reformed completely.
"...I celebrated too early."
The Headmaster Arrives
A powerful wave of golden energy swept through the chamber.
Every Hollow Knight staggered.
The darkness recoiled.
The broken entrance to the underground exploded inward.
Golden light poured into the ruins.
A familiar figure walked through the dust.
Headmaster Caelum.
His long white coat was torn almost beyond recognition.
His left sleeve hung empty.
His left arm...
Was gone.
Blood stained the bandages wrapped around the wound.
Yet he stood perfectly straight.
His golden spear rested against one shoulder.
His blue eyes remained calm.
Every person in the chamber stared in shock.
"Headmaster!"
Fin gasped.
Priston's expression changed instantly.
"...Your arm..."
Caelum looked down briefly.
"It seemed an acceptable price."
"For what?"
The old man smiled.
"Buying the students enough time to evacuate."
Silence.
Orion lowered his spear respectfully.
"...You survived."
"Barely."
"I was beginning to think age had finally caught you."
Caelum chuckled.
"Not today."
Noctis tilted his head.
"The old guardian."
"It has been centuries."
"It has."
Caelum answered.
"And somehow..."
He twirled his spear.
"...you've become even uglier."
Priston looked at Fin.
"...Did..."
"...Did the Headmaster just insult an ancient god?"
Fin nodded slowly.
"I think he did."
Old Rivals
Noctis actually laughed.
"You've always been amusing."
"And you've always talked too much."
Caelum replied.
The Headmaster stepped beside Orion.
The two men exchanged a single glance.
No words.
None were necessary.
They had fought together once before.
Long ago.
Orion noticed the missing arm.
"You should have retreated."
"So should you."
The old Headmaster answered.
"You look terrible."
"I've looked terrible for twenty years."
"Fair enough."
Despite the impossible circumstances...
Both men smiled.
The smile of warriors who had survived too many battles together.
A Lesson Never Forgotten
Caelum looked toward Fin.
"Miss Ashford."
She straightened instinctively.
"Sir."
"You've grown."
"I've also been nearly killed three times today."
"Four."
Orion corrected.
"You forgot the collapsing ceiling."
"...Right."
Caelum laughed quietly.
"I suppose you're becoming a true student."
Then his expression softened.
"Do you remember your first day?"
Fin nodded.
"You told us..."
She smiled faintly.
"...that abilities don't make heroes."
"What did?"
"The choices we make."
"Correct."
His gaze shifted toward the terrified faces of the younger students visible through the broken passage above.
"Never forget that."
The Truth Behind the Academy
Fin hesitated before asking,
"Headmaster..."
"...did you know who I was?"
Caelum didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he removed a small silver key hanging beneath his coat.
It was old.
Worn smooth with age.
"I knew."
He admitted.
"Since the day your parents left you at my gate."
"You... met them?"
"I promised them."
His voice grew quieter.
"I promised I would raise you not as a princess..."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"...but as a girl allowed to choose her own future."
Fin felt tears sting her eyes.
"So everything..."
"The academy."
"The entrance exam."
"The classes..."
"Were real."
"Every moment."
Caelum smiled warmly.
"You earned your place here."
"Not because of your blood."
"But because of your heart."
Noctis sighed dramatically.
"Touching."
His voice echoed through the chamber.
"Have you finished reminiscing?"
The darkness around him surged again.
"I grow impatient."
Caelum stepped forward.
His spear began glowing brighter than ever before.
Golden runes appeared beneath his feet.
Ancient symbols older than the academy itself.
Orion's expression changed instantly.
"...Caelum."
The Headmaster didn't look back.
"Take the children."
"What are you doing?"
"Buying time."
"You've already sacrificed enough."
"There is no such thing."
Caelum answered softly.
"...when it's for the next generation."
Fin's heart began pounding.
"No."
She shook her head.
"No, we're fighting together."
Caelum smiled over his shoulder.
The same gentle smile he had worn on orientation day.
"Miss Ashford..."
"I have one final lesson to teach."
The runes beneath him erupted with blinding golden light.
The entire chamber began shaking.
Noctis's smile slowly disappeared.
"You wouldn't..."
"Oh."
Caelum chuckled.
"I most certainly would."
A massive magic circle spread beneath the entire Star Vault.
Orion's eyes widened.
"Everyone!"
His voice thundered through the chamber.
"RUN!"
The light swallowed everything.
.
The Fallen Academy
Part IV — The Hero's Farewell
The world turned gold.
Not bright.
Not blinding.
Warm.
It felt like standing beneath the first sunrise after a lifetime of endless rain.
Fin couldn't hear the explosions anymore.
The screams.
The battle.
Everything disappeared beneath the overwhelming glow pouring from the ancient magic circle spreading beneath Headmaster Caelum's feet.
The old man stood at its center, his white hair drifting in a wind that didn't exist.
Golden symbols spiraled around him like countless stars orbiting a dying sun.
Every rune carried a memory.
Every light represented a promise.
Every pulse whispered the same message.
Protect them.
"No..."
Fin's voice cracked.
She took a step forward.
"No!"
The Crownblade trembled violently in her hand, almost as if it understood what was about to happen.
Headmaster Caelum looked over his shoulder.
For the first time...
He looked tired.
Not physically.
Spiritually.
Like a man who had carried the weight of an entire generation for far too long.
His gentle smile remained.
"I was hoping..."
He said quietly.
"...you wouldn't have to witness this."
Orion moved first.
He grabbed Fin's wrist before she could run toward the Headmaster.
"Let go!"
She struggled.
"We have to help him!"
"We can't."
"We can!"
"FIN!"
Orion's voice thundered through the chamber.
It startled everyone.
Even Selene had never heard her father shout.
The king's silver eyes were filled with something Fin hadn't seen before.
Grief.
"If you interrupt that spell..."
He swallowed.
"...his sacrifice will mean nothing."
"No!"
Fin pulled against his grip.
"There has to be another way!"
"There isn't."
"There always is!"
"Not this time."
His words landed like stones.
The truth hurt more than any lie ever could.
Priston looked between them.
His hands curled into fists.
"I'll drag him out."
He started running.
Zanne immediately grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
"I won't let him die!"
"You'll die with him."
"I don't care!"
"I do."
Priston froze.
Zanne's normally calm expression had finally broken.
His eyes glistened.
His voice shook.
"I've already lost enough people."
"...I'm not losing you too."
For a long moment...
Neither of them moved.
Priston slowly lowered his sword.
"...Damn it."
He hated it.
He hated standing still.
Hated feeling helpless.
Hated watching someone else carry the burden.
The golden light continued expanding.
Every Hollow Knight trapped within the circle stopped moving.
They turned toward Caelum simultaneously.
Noctis's smile disappeared.
"Interesting."
The Hollow King slowly stepped forward.
"So you've chosen extinction."
Caelum laughed softly.
"No."
"I've chosen..."
His spear burst into brilliant gold.
"...hope."
A Promise from Long Ago
Fin's vision blurred.
Not because of tears.
Because the magic surrounding Caelum was awakening memories that didn't belong to her.
She saw a younger Caelum.
Without wrinkles.
Without gray hair.
Standing beneath a crystal tree.
A little girl laughed as she chased glowing butterflies through the palace gardens.
Silver hair.
Blue eyes.
Five years old.
Fin.
She tripped over a tree root.
Before she hit the ground...
A young Headmaster caught her.
"You should watch where you're running."
The little girl puffed out her cheeks.
"I was chasing stars."
"You can't catch stars."
She frowned stubbornly.
"Then I'll become tall enough."
Caelum laughed.
"And how will you do that?"
She placed both hands on her hips.
"I'll eat lots of vegetables."
He chuckled so hard he nearly dropped the books he was carrying.
"What if that doesn't work?"
The little Fin thought for a very long time.
Then she smiled brightly.
"Then you'll carry me."
Caelum blinked.
"...Me?"
"Mhm."
"You're really tall."
"You can reach anything."
He smiled.
"I suppose I can."
"Promise?"
"...Promise."
The memory shattered.
Back in the present...
Tears rolled silently down Fin's cheeks.
"...You remembered."
Caelum looked at her with gentle surprise.
"So did you."
The Hero Nobody Sang About
The Headmaster slowly planted his spear into the ground.
The ancient weapon disappeared into the glowing circle.
The earth trembled.
Golden chains erupted from beneath the stone.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
They wrapped around every Hollow Knight.
They wrapped around the darkness itself.
Even Noctis paused.
"...The First Binding."
His expression finally changed.
Recognition.
"You preserved it."
"For moments like this."
Caelum answered.
Noctis sighed.
"You truly never learn."
He raised one hand.
Darkness surged outward.
It slammed against the golden chains.
The underground kingdom shook violently.
Stone ceilings collapsed.
Columns cracked.
The ancient palace buried beneath Academia was tearing itself apart.
Above ground...
Students looked toward the academy courtyard as a pillar of golden light erupted into the heavens.
It pierced the storm clouds.
Rain stopped falling.
Every battle froze.
Shadow Legion soldiers lowered their weapons.
Professors stopped fighting.
Even the wounded lifted their heads.
The entire world seemed to pause.
Professor Seraphine whispered,
"...Headmaster..."
Her sword slipped from her fingers.
She already knew.
Orion's Regret
Orion stared silently at the man standing inside the circle.
"...You're doing it again."
Caelum smiled.
"I suppose I am."
"Last time..."
Orion's voice became quieter.
"...I was the one who walked away."
"And this time..."
"I will."
Neither man spoke for several seconds.
Finally...
Caelum laughed.
"You still owe me a drink."
Orion smiled despite the tears gathering in his eyes.
"...You still drink terrible tea."
"It builds character."
"It tastes like grass."
"It is grass."
Priston blinked.
"...They're arguing about tea?"
Selene quietly wiped her eyes.
"They always did."
Fin Makes a Choice
Fin looked at the Crownblade.
Then at Caelum.
Then at the collapsing Star Vault.
She remembered his first lesson.
"Abilities don't make heroes."
"Choices do."
Her breathing steadied.
She wasn't a frightened girl anymore.
She wasn't the child hiding behind her parents.
She wasn't the confused first-year who barely understood abilities.
She was Fin.
A student of Academia.
And she refused to lose another family member without trying.
She took one determined step forward.
Orion reached for her.
She gently pulled away.
"I'm not stopping the spell."
She said quietly.
"But I'm not leaving him alone either."
Before anyone could stop her...
She sprinted toward the glowing circle.
"FIN!"
Priston shouted.
The moment her foot crossed the edge of the magic circle...
The Crownblade exploded with silver light.
The golden runes reacted instantly.
Instead of rejecting her...
They welcomed her.
Caelum looked genuinely surprised.
"...The Crownblade accepted the ritual."
Fin stood beside him.
Breathing hard.
"I made you a promise too."
She smiled through her tears.
"I'm your student."
"And students..."
She tightened her grip on the sword.
"...don't abandon their teachers."
For the first time in centuries...
Noctis frowned.
The Hollow King looked at the girl standing beside the old guardian.
Then at the Crownblade.
Then at the golden magic circle that had begun changing.
Something impossible was happening.
The ritual...
...was evolving.
Orion's eyes widened.
"No..."
He whispered.
"That's not the First Binding..."
The ancient runes shifted.
Silver intertwined with gold.
Symbols no living person had ever seen emerged across the chamber floor.
Caelum stared in disbelief.
"...This spell..."
"I've never learned this."
The Crownblade hummed.
A voice—old, calm, and unmistakably feminine—echoed throughout the chamber.
"Then remember."
The walls of the Star Vault cracked open further.
Not from darkness.
From light.
Deep beneath the ruined palace...
Something ancient...
Something beautiful...
Something alive...
Was beginning to awaken.
Noctis took his first step backward.
And for the very first time...
The immortal Hollow King looked afraid.
