Chapter 9.1 - 9.2 - The King Without a Crown
Part I – A Villain's Truth
The words echoed through the underground chamber.
"...She stole you from me."
For several seconds, no one spoke.
The silver blossoms growing across the walls seemed to stop swaying.
Even the Crownblade in Fin's hand felt strangely still.
Her heart pounded against her ribs.
"What..."
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
"...did you just say?"
King Orion didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at her the way someone might look at an old photograph—filled with memories only they could understand.
There was no hatred in his eyes.
No madness.
Only an exhaustion so deep it made him seem older than the legends described.
"You heard me."
His voice was calm.
"Your mother took you away."
Fin shook her head.
"No."
"My mother protected me from you."
"So that's what they told you."
The faint smile on Orion's face disappeared.
"They always tell children the version that lets them sleep."
A King's Presence
Standing only a few yards away, Orion radiated a quiet authority unlike anyone Fin had ever met.
He wasn't loud.
He didn't need to be.
Every soldier she'd encountered shouted orders.
Every professor commanded attention.
Orion simply stood there...
...and the room obeyed.
His silver armor was scarred by countless battles.
His black cloak was torn at the edges.
A thin white scar ran across his jaw.
He looked less like a king sitting safely upon a throne...
...and more like a man who had personally fought every war history remembered.
Priston tightened his grip on his sword.
"I've heard enough."
He stepped forward.
"You don't get to rewrite history."
Orion's gaze finally shifted to him.
"The Fenrir bloodline."
Priston froze.
"You resemble your grandfather."
"You knew him?"
"I fought beside him."
Silence.
Priston frowned.
"...That's impossible."
"It was before he chose another side."
The Sword That Wouldn't Rise
Priston lunged.
His instincts screamed at him to protect Fin.
His blade cut through the air with practiced precision.
Fast.
Deadly.
A strike capable of splitting stone.
Orion didn't move.
Not even an inch.
Just before the blade reached him—
Clang.
Priston's sword stopped.
Not because Orion blocked it.
Because it refused to move any farther.
An invisible force held it in place.
Priston strained with all his strength.
Nothing.
"...What?"
Orion gently placed two fingers against the flat of the blade.
"You've become stronger."
With one effortless motion...
He pushed.
Priston was thrown backward across the corridor.
He slammed into a stone pillar with a sickening crash.
"Priston!"
Fin rushed toward him.
"I'm okay..."
He coughed, pushing himself upright.
"...I think."
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
For the first time since meeting him...
Fin saw genuine fear in his amber eyes.
The Difference Between Strength and Power
Orion sighed.
"I dislike fighting children."
Priston laughed bitterly.
"You have a funny way of showing it."
"I aimed for the wall."
"You could've killed me."
"If I intended to..."
Orion replied quietly.
"...you wouldn't be speaking."
No arrogance.
No pride.
Just a simple statement.
Somehow...
That frightened Fin more than if he had boasted.
Zanne Speaks
"Enough."
Zanne stepped in front of Fin.
His voice, usually gentle, carried an unfamiliar firmness.
"If you've truly come for her..."
His gray eyes met Orion's.
"...then you'll have to go through me."
Orion studied him for a long moment.
Then...
Something unexpected happened.
The king smiled.
"Ashford."
Not Zanne.
Ashford.
The surname.
"I wondered when we'd meet again."
Zanne's shoulders stiffened.
"You know him?" Fin asked.
Orion nodded.
"I attended his birth."
Fin blinked.
"...What?"
"He was born during the final year before the war."
"I held him in my arms while his mother laughed because he wouldn't stop crying."
A faint chuckle escaped the king.
"He bit my finger."
Priston looked between them.
"...You're telling me..."
"...you babysat him?"
Zanne buried his face in one hand.
"...Can we not call it that?"
Despite the impossible situation...
Fin almost laughed.
Almost.
The Weight of the Past
"I knew your parents."
Orion continued.
"They were honorable people."
"They died protecting mine."
Zanne answered coldly.
"They died protecting your sister."
For the first time...
Pain crossed Orion's face.
"My greatest regret."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
"Then why say it?"
"Because whether you believe me or not..."
He looked toward the silver murals.
"...it remains true."
Selene's Choice
Selene quietly stepped beside her father.
"You shouldn't be here."
"I know."
"The generals are waiting."
"They can wait."
Her crimson eyes searched his face.
"...You promised."
"I promised I would try."
"And if she refuses?"
Orion looked at Fin.
"Then she refuses."
Priston stared.
"...That's it?"
"You invade the academy..."
"Start a war..."
"And if she says no, you just leave?"
The king answered without hesitation.
"No."
His eyes hardened.
"Then the world ends."
Silence.
Every person in the corridor felt the weight of those words.
Fin swallowed.
"...Explain."
The Truth About the Heart
Orion slowly approached the silver vines.
They curled around his boots without attacking him.
"They remember me."
He whispered.
"I grew up here too."
Fin frowned.
"...What?"
"This academy..."
He rested his hand against the ancient stone.
"...was once my home."
"No."
"Before it became Academia..."
"It was the palace of Astralis."
Images from Fin's dreams flashed before her eyes.
Crystal gardens.
White towers.
Children running through endless halls.
She had been here before.
Centuries of renovations...
Hidden walls...
New buildings...
They had buried an entire kingdom beneath a school.
"The Star Vault doesn't contain a weapon."
Orion continued.
"It contains the Aether Heart."
"The source from which every Ability Wielder draws power."
Fin looked toward the sealed chamber.
"The Heart is alive?"
"In a way."
"It chooses."
"It judges."
"It remembers."
"And every thousand years..."
He looked directly at her.
"...it awakens."
Why the War Began
"My sister believed the Heart should remain asleep forever."
Orion said quietly.
"I believed it should awaken."
"Why?"
Fin asked.
"Because something else was waking."
He looked upward.
Far beyond the stone ceiling.
Toward the night sky.
"There is an enemy older than our family."
"Older than kingdoms."
"Older than abilities themselves."
Even Zanne looked surprised.
"I've never read about that."
"You weren't meant to."
Orion replied.
"The history books end with our war."
"They never mention what came before."
Fin frowned.
"...What are you talking about?"
The king's expression darkened.
"The Void."
The silver blossoms around the corridor wilted.
The Crownblade hummed.
Even the air seemed to grow colder.
"It does not conquer kingdoms."
"It consumes worlds."
"It cannot be reasoned with."
"It cannot be imprisoned forever."
"And the seal keeping it asleep..."
He looked toward the Star Vault.
"...is failing."
Before anyone could respond—
A scream echoed through the tunnels.
Not from the battlefield.
Not from outside.
From deep...
Deep beneath the Star Vault.
The ground shook violently.
The silver vines recoiled as if burned.
Cracks spread across the ancient doors.
One by one.
Then...
A long, black tendril emerged through the opening.
Unlike the silver vines, it carried no life.
Where it touched stone...
The stone crumbled into ash.
The temperature dropped instantly.
Every torch extinguished.
A whisper filled the darkness.
Not one voice.
Thousands.
Speaking at once.
"...We remember..."
Orion's face lost all color.
"No..."
He whispered.
"We're too late."
The black tendril slowly reached toward Fin.
Not attacking.
Searching.
Hungry.
The Crownblade erupted in brilliant silver light.
And somewhere above them...
Every bell in Academia rang wildly on its own.
.
The King Without a Crown
Part II – The Darkness That Remembers
The whisper crawled through the underground halls.
It wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
It slipped beneath skin, wrapped around thoughts, and settled inside the deepest corners of every heart.
"...We remember..."
The black tendril stretched farther from the cracked Star Vault, moving unnaturally slowly, as though savoring every inch of freedom it gained.
Where it touched the stone floor...
The marble aged centuries in seconds.
White stone became gray.
Gray became brittle.
Then...
It dissolved into black dust.
Fin instinctively stepped back.
"What... is that?"
Her voice trembled despite her efforts to steady it.
King Orion never took his eyes off the tendril.
"The Void."
"No..."
Zanne whispered.
"It can't already be breaking through."
"It shouldn't."
Orion nodded grimly.
"It wasn't supposed to."
A Presence Older Than History
The corridor darkened.
Not because the torches had gone out.
Because the darkness itself was growing.
It flowed from the crack in the Star Vault like ink spilled across paper.
The silver blossoms shriveled wherever the shadows reached.
Petals drifted silently to the floor.
Even the air became difficult to breathe.
Priston tightened his grip on his sword.
"...Why does it feel like..."
He struggled to find the words.
"...like something is looking at me?"
"It is."
Orion answered.
"The Void doesn't see with eyes."
"It searches hearts."
"It feeds on fear."
"It whispers to your regrets."
Fin frowned.
"How do you know all this?"
The king's expression hardened.
"Because..."
He spoke so quietly they almost didn't hear him.
"...I've fought it before."
The First Whisper
Without warning...
Fin heard her mother's voice.
"Fin..."
She spun around.
"...Mom?"
The corridor was empty.
Only her friends remained.
The whisper came again.
Closer.
"You couldn't save us."
Her breathing caught.
"No..."
Another voice joined it.
Her adoptive father.
"If you had been stronger..."
Then her adoptive mother.
"Everything is your fault."
Fin clutched her head.
"Stop..."
The voices grew louder.
More vicious.
"You're the reason they died."
"Everyone around you gets hurt."
"Run."
"Hide."
"You're not worthy of the Crownblade."
Her knees buckled.
The sword slipped slightly in her hand.
"Fin!"
Priston rushed toward her.
Before he could reach her—
Orion blocked his path.
"Don't."
Priston shoved him.
"What are you doing?"
"If you touch her..."
Orion's voice remained calm.
"...the whispers will spread to you."
Priston's Anger
"You expect me to stand here?"
Priston's amber eyes blazed.
"She's suffering!"
"I know."
"You know?!"
His voice echoed through the corridor.
"Then help her!"
"I can't."
Priston stared at him.
For the first time...
The king looked helpless.
"I wish I could."
Zanne's Decision
Zanne slowly approached Fin.
Ignoring Orion's warning.
Priston grabbed his shoulder.
"What are you doing?"
"I've spent sixteen years keeping my distance."
His gray eyes never left Fin.
"I'm done."
Before anyone could stop him...
He knelt beside her.
"Fin."
She didn't respond.
Her eyes remained fixed on something only she could see.
He gently removed his glasses.
Something he almost never did.
His tired gray eyes softened.
"Listen to me."
Nothing.
The whispers continued.
"You once asked me..."
He smiled sadly.
"...why I always carried so many books."
Still nothing.
"I told you..."
"'Because knowledge is power.'"
A faint twitch crossed Fin's face.
"It wasn't true."
He chuckled quietly.
"The truth is..."
He looked down.
"...I was afraid."
"Books never left."
"Books never lied."
"But people..."
His voice cracked.
"...people always did."
A tear rolled down Fin's cheek.
The whispers faltered.
"You weren't alone."
He continued.
"You never were."
His hand hesitated.
Then he gently held hers.
"I should've told you everything."
"I'm sorry."
"I was trying so hard to protect you..."
"...that I forgot you deserved the truth."
The darkness around Fin flickered.
A Promise
Inside her mind...
Fin stood alone in endless darkness.
The whispers circled her like wolves.
Accusing.
Blaming.
Mocking.
Then...
A warm hand reached toward her.
Not her mother's.
Not Lyra's.
Zanne's.
His voice echoed through the void.
"You're allowed to be afraid."
"Just don't stay there alone."
The darkness cracked.
A thin beam of silver light pierced the endless night.
The Crownblade Awakens
Outside...
The Crownblade suddenly burst into brilliant silver flames.
Not fire.
Pure starlight.
The light forced the darkness away from Fin.
The whispers screamed.
Thousands of voices cried out together.
"THE HEIR REMEMBERS!"
The corridor shook violently.
Silver runes raced across the floor.
Every blossom bloomed again.
Fin slowly opened her eyes.
They were no longer their usual deep blue.
They shimmered like an endless night sky.
Tiny stars sparkled within them.
Everyone stared.
Even Orion.
"So..."
He whispered.
"It has begun."
The First Stage
Fin stood slowly.
The Crownblade felt lighter than air.
Power flowed through her—not painfully, but naturally, as if a missing part of herself had finally returned.
She looked at her hands.
Silver light danced across her fingertips before fading.
"What..."
She whispered.
"...did I just do?"
Orion answered with unmistakable pride in his voice.
"You awakened."
"The first stage of the Starborn bloodline."
He looked toward the glowing blade.
"Starlight Manifestation."
The Void Strikes
The black tendril suddenly lashed forward.
Fast.
Far faster than anyone expected.
It shot directly toward Fin's chest.
"Look out!"
Priston shoved her aside.
The tendril struck his shoulder instead.
A scream tore from his throat.
Black veins spread instantly beneath his skin.
He collapsed.
"Priston!"
Fin dropped to her knees beside him.
His breathing became ragged.
His normally warm amber eyes clouded with darkness.
"It..."
He gasped.
"...it's cold..."
The black veins continued climbing toward his neck.
Zanne looked horrified.
"It's corrupting him."
"How do we stop it?"
No one answered.
Even Orion looked uncertain.
A King's Gamble
The king slowly removed one leather glove.
Across the back of his hand...
A black mark twisted like living smoke.
It looked almost identical to the corruption spreading across Priston's arm.
Fin stared.
"You..."
Orion nodded.
"I've carried the Void's corruption for twenty years."
Silence.
"What?"
Selene's face drained of color.
"...Father..."
"You never told me."
"There wasn't time."
He knelt beside Priston.
"If we don't remove it now..."
He looked at Fin.
"...he'll become one of them."
"One of who?"
Orion's expression darkened.
"The Hollow."
The word alone chilled the air.
"They aren't dead."
"They aren't alive."
"They're simply..."
"...empty."
Trust
Orion extended his hand toward Priston.
Fin immediately stepped between them, raising the Crownblade.
"You expect me to trust you?"
"No."
He answered honestly.
"I expect you to choose."
"If you stop me..."
"He dies."
"If you let me help..."
"You'll owe me nothing."
For a long moment...
Neither moved.
Fin looked down at Priston.
His breathing was growing weaker.
His fingers trembled violently.
"...Fin..."
He forced out.
"...Don't..."
His voice faded.
She closed her eyes.
Every instinct screamed not to trust Orion.
But another voice echoed within her.
Her mother's.
"Judge people by the choices they make... not the stories you've heard."
Slowly...
Very slowly...
Fin lowered the Crownblade.
"You have one chance."
Orion gave a single nod.
"I won't waste it."
He placed his corrupted hand over Priston's wound.
The two black marks reacted instantly.
Darkness surged between them.
The corridor erupted in black and silver light.
Priston screamed.
Orion gritted his teeth, his composure finally cracking.
The corruption began to leave Priston...
...and flow into the king instead.
The veins on Orion's arm spread farther, climbing toward his neck.
Sweat beaded across his forehead.
His breathing grew heavy.
Selene took a frightened step forward.
"Father, stop!"
"If you absorb any more—"
"I know."
He interrupted.
"But the boy..."
His jaw tightened.
"...still has a life to live."
Moments later...
The black corruption vanished completely from Priston's body.
He collapsed unconscious.
Orion staggered backward, catching himself against the wall.
For the first time...
The king coughed up blood.
A single drop landed on the white petals of a silver blossom.
The flower instantly turned black.
Fin stared at him.
Confused.
Terrified.
Nothing about this man matched the monster she had imagined.
And somehow...
That frightened her even more.
Just then, a thunderous roar echoed from deep within the Star Vault.
The cracked doors bulged outward.
Something enormous struck them from the inside.
Once.
Twice.
A third impact sent ancient dust cascading from the ceiling.
Orion looked toward the vault.
His expression became one of absolute dread.
"...It's awake."
