Chapter 14 - The Girl Between Two Names
Fin didn't answer immediately.
The corridor seemed to stretch infinitely in both directions, its walls woven from constellations that shifted with every heartbeat. Tiny lights drifted around her like fireflies, illuminating the silver path beneath her feet.
At the end of that path stood Lyra.
The First Starborn Queen.
The woman who had forged the Crownblade.
The woman who had just asked a question capable of changing everything.
"If I told you everything you believe about yourself is a lie..."
The words echoed through Fin's mind.
Would she still want to know?
She thought about the tiny cottage hidden at the edge of the forest.
The smell of fresh bread every morning.
Her adoptive father teaching her how to chop firewood because "every person should know how to survive without magic."
Her adoptive mother humming songs while tending the garden.
The nights spent lying beneath the stars, wondering who she truly was.
Then...
She thought about the academy.
About laughing with Mira over breakfast.
About late-night study sessions with Zanne that somehow always turned into arguments over books.
About Priston dragging her into trouble with that infuriating grin that somehow made saying no impossible.
About Headmaster Caelum smiling proudly whenever she improved.
Those memories...
They weren't lies.
No matter what truth waited ahead.
Fin lifted her chin.
"I want to know."
Lyra studied her for several long seconds.
Then she smiled.
"A good answer."
"It isn't the answer I expected."
Fin frowned.
"What did you expect?"
"That you'd ask whether the truth would hurt."
"...Will it?"
"Yes."
Lyra answered honestly.
"It always does."
The corridor slowly disappeared.
The stars surrounding them gathered into enormous circles overhead until they resembled galaxies spinning through endless darkness.
Fin found herself standing in an open field beneath a sky with no sun.
Only stars.
Millions upon millions of them.
There was no wind.
No sound.
Only the distant heartbeat of the Aether Heart echoing somewhere beyond reality.
"This..."
Fin whispered.
"...isn't inside the sanctuary anymore."
"No."
Lyra walked slowly across the field.
"We are inside your soul."
Fin blinked.
"...Excuse me?"
Lyra laughed softly.
"I suppose that sounds alarming."
"A little."
"The Trial of Stars isn't fought with swords."
"It's fought with truth."
As Lyra spoke, mirrors began rising from the ground.
Hundreds of them.
Each one different.
Some tall.
Some broken.
Some so polished they reflected the stars above.
Others blackened beyond recognition.
Fin turned in every direction.
Every mirror reflected...
A different version of herself.
A child.
An old woman.
A queen.
A frightened girl hiding beneath a table.
A warrior covered in blood.
A lonely student sitting by herself during lunch on her first day at Academia.
"...What is this?"
"Possibilities."
Lyra answered.
"Every choice."
"Every fear."
"Every future."
One mirror caught Fin's attention.
She slowly approached it.
Instead of showing her reflection...
It showed the tiny cottage.
Her adoptive parents were laughing while hanging clothes outside.
Her younger self chased butterflies through the yard.
The sight made her smile.
"I remember this day."
"It was the first time you called them..."
Lyra paused.
"...Mother."
"...Father."
Fin whispered.
She reached toward the mirror.
The image rippled.
Then shattered.
Fin stepped back in surprise.
"Why did it break?"
"Because..."
Lyra looked at her kindly.
"...that memory isn't the one holding you back."
Another mirror glowed.
This one showed a different scene.
Rain.
A dark forest.
A carriage burning in the distance.
A woman running while holding a baby wrapped in a silver blanket.
Queen Elara.
Her face was streaked with tears.
Behind her...
Shadowy figures pursued relentlessly.
Fin's heart began pounding.
"This is..."
"The night you disappeared."
Lyra answered.
"No."
Fin shook her head.
"I was told my parents died."
"They did."
Lyra corrected gently.
"But not immediately."
The memory continued.
Elara stumbled into a hidden cave deep within the forest.
Inside waited two ordinary people.
A young couple.
Fin's adoptive parents.
Her mother gasped.
"Your Majesty..."
Elara smiled weakly.
"No titles tonight."
She carefully placed the infant into the young woman's trembling arms.
"Protect her."
"We will."
"Love her."
"As our own."
Tears rolled down Elara's cheeks.
"I know you already do."
Fin watched silently.
She had never seen this memory before.
Never imagined it.
Her adoptive father looked terrified.
"They'll come after us."
"I know."
"They'll kill us."
"I know."
"Then why choose us?"
Elara stepped forward.
Because...
She gently touched the young woman's cheek.
"...you've never cared whether a child was born with power."
"You only cared whether she was loved."
The young couple began crying.
"So will you."
Elara whispered.
"But she'll never know the difference."
Fin couldn't breathe.
She watched her adoptive mother cradle the infant with trembling hands.
"I'll protect her."
She promised.
"Even if it costs everything."
Elara smiled.
"I know."
The Queen leaned down and kissed the baby's forehead.
"My little star."
Her voice trembled.
"When you grow up..."
"I hope you forget I was ever your mother."
Fin's eyes widened.
"What?"
The memory froze.
Lyra looked at her.
"She wanted you to live."
"Not as a queen."
"Not as a symbol."
"As a child."
Fin felt tears welling in her eyes.
"She wanted me to forget her?"
"No."
Lyra answered.
"She wanted you to have the chance to choose your own life."
"If you had remembered everything..."
She gestured toward the battlefield hidden within another mirror.
"...you would've spent your childhood preparing for war."
Instead...
"You climbed trees."
"You fell into rivers."
"You burned your first attempt at baking."
Fin sniffled.
"...Mom still teases me about that."
Lyra smiled.
"I know."
The mirrors trembled.
One by one...
They began disappearing.
Until only a single mirror remained.
Unlike the others...
It reflected nothing.
Only darkness.
Lyra's smile faded.
"The final truth."
Fin slowly approached.
The surface of the mirror rippled.
Then...
A name appeared.
Not Fin.
Not Ashford.
A different name.
One she had never seen before.
Seraphina Astraea.
She stared.
"...That's not my name."
"It was."
Lyra answered.
"Before the world forgot."
Fin shook her head.
"No."
"My name is Fin."
"Yes."
Lyra nodded.
"It is."
"But it wasn't always."
"I don't understand."
"You were born..."
Lyra's voice softened.
"...Princess Seraphina Astraea."
"Heir to Astralis."
"The last daughter of Queen Elara."
"The child prophecy named..."
"...The Seventh Star."
The mirror shimmered again.
Another image appeared.
A baby.
The same silver blanket.
Except this time...
The blanket bore the royal crest and the embroidered name:
Seraphina.
Fin stumbled backward.
"...No."
"My parents..."
"They named me Fin."
"They named you again."
Lyra corrected gently.
"Because the woman who raised you refused to call you by a name chosen by destiny."
The words struck harder than any sword.
"She said..."
Lyra smiled warmly.
"'Seraphina belongs to queens.'"
"'But this little girl...'"
"...'looks more like a Fin.'"
Fin laughed through her tears.
"...She actually said that?"
"She did."
"And your father agreed immediately."
"'Fin runs faster anyway.'"
Despite everything...
Fin couldn't stop smiling.
Her parents.
Her real parents.
Not because they shared her blood.
Because they had loved her enough to give her a second beginning.
She wiped her eyes.
"My name..."
She smiled softly.
"...is Fin."
Lyra nodded with quiet pride.
"Exactly."
"The Trial was never about discovering who you were."
"It was about deciding who you choose to be."
The stars overhead exploded into brilliant light.
The mirrors dissolved.
The field disappeared.
The Crownblade in Lyra's hands transformed into pure starlight before drifting toward Fin.
The moment she touched it—
A warm voice echoed from somewhere impossibly far away.
Not Lyra.
Not Elara.
Her adoptive mother.
"No matter what anyone calls you..."
"You'll always be my little Fin."
Tears streamed freely down her face.
She smiled through them.
"I know, Mom."
Then the stars around her ignited.
The First Trial...
Had accepted her.
