Chapter 12 - The Echo Beneath the Stars
The roar did not come again.
It lingered.
Low.
Ancient.
Powerful enough that every stone within the Heart of Astralis vibrated in response.
Dust drifted from the ceiling in slow spirals.
The silver blossoms lining the sanctuary closed their petals one by one, as though hiding from whatever had awakened beneath them.
Fin stared at the fractured Aether Heart.
The cracks were spreading.
Not quickly.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Each new fracture dimmed another constellation swirling inside the crystal.
The galaxies that had once danced within its core now flickered like candles fighting against the wind.
"...It's dying."
The words escaped her lips before she realized she had spoken them aloud.
Queen Elara's memory lowered her gaze.
"Not dying."
She corrected gently.
"...Calling."
Fin frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The Heart has always been more than a source of Aether."
Elara stepped closer to the floating crystal.
"It is a seal."
Silence settled over the sanctuary.
Priston broke it first.
"...I feel like everything important is secretly a seal."
Even in such a tense moment, Fin couldn't help letting out a quiet laugh.
"You noticed that too?"
"I'm serious."
He counted on his fingers.
"The academy was hiding a kingdom."
"The kingdom was hiding a vault."
"The vault was hiding Noctis."
"And now the Heart is secretly another seal."
He looked around dramatically.
"Can somebody tell me if the cafeteria is sealing an ancient dragon?"
Selene smiled despite herself.
"It wouldn't surprise me."
Orion rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"You joke..."
"But you aren't entirely wrong."
Priston immediately stopped smiling.
"...Wait."
"...You're kidding."
Orion remained silent.
Priston pointed accusingly.
"That silence worries me."
The sanctuary trembled once more.
This time...
The heartbeat beneath their feet became uneven.
Thump...
...
Thump.
...
THUMP.
The last pulse shook the entire chamber.
Tiny pieces of crystal rained from the ceiling.
The pools of silver light surrounding the sanctuary rippled violently.
Fin looked toward Elara.
"What happens if the Heart breaks?"
The Queen didn't answer.
She couldn't.
Instead...
Headmaster Caelum did.
His face had grown noticeably paler.
The golden spell that had saved them earlier still surrounded his body, but it flickered with each passing second.
"If the Heart shatters..."
He paused.
"...Aether disappears."
Nobody spoke.
Zanne frowned.
"...That's impossible."
"Abilities come from Aether."
"They do."
"So..."
Zanne slowly understood.
"If the Heart dies..."
"...every Ability Wielder loses their power."
"Eventually."
Caelum nodded.
"And not just this kingdom."
"The entire world."
The realization struck everyone differently.
Selene instinctively reached for her remaining dagger.
Its crimson enchantment flickered weakly.
Priston stared at his hands.
The hands he had trained for years.
The hands that had become his identity.
"...Everything?"
Orion answered quietly.
"Everything."
Fin looked down at the glowing Crownblade.
Even its silver light had begun to dim.
She had only just discovered who she truly was.
Now...
She might lose it all before she even understood it.
Noctis stepped toward the Heart.
His black robes drifted across the glowing floor without making a sound.
"You misunderstand."
His calm voice echoed through the sanctuary.
"The death of Aether isn't the end."
"It is freedom."
Priston scoffed.
"Freedom?"
The Hollow King looked at him.
"Power divides humanity."
"Kings."
"Empires."
"War."
"Greed."
"Take away abilities..."
He opened one hand.
"...and everyone becomes equal."
"No."
Fin answered immediately.
"They become defenseless."
"They become human."
"They already are."
Her voice became firmer.
"And humans don't stop fighting just because magic disappears."
She thought of the stories her adoptive father used to tell her.
Wars fought without abilities.
Families torn apart by ordinary hatred.
People had always found reasons to hurt each other.
Magic had never invented cruelty.
It had only amplified it.
Noctis studied her for a long moment.
"...You've inherited your mother's stubbornness."
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"You should."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"It was."
Before another word could be spoken...
A sharp gasp echoed through the chamber.
Selene dropped to one knee.
Her hand flew to her chest.
"Father..."
Orion staggered.
The black veins beneath his skin spread rapidly across his neck.
His spear slipped from his grasp, clattering against the crystal floor.
"Father!"
Selene rushed to his side.
Fin ran over as well.
Orion's breathing had become shallow.
Pain twisted across his face.
The corruption inside him was no longer sleeping.
It was fighting to escape.
Noctis watched in silence.
"It appears..."
He said softly.
"...our agreement is ending."
Fin looked sharply toward him.
"Agreement?"
Selene froze.
"You don't know?"
Fin's heart sank.
"What agreement?"
Orion slowly opened his eyes.
His silver gaze met hers.
"I promised him..."
He whispered.
"...a piece of my soul."
The sanctuary fell silent.
"I imprisoned part of the Void inside myself."
He continued with difficulty.
"In return..."
He coughed violently.
"...Noctis could not leave the Vault."
Priston's eyes widened.
"You chained yourself to him?"
"For twenty-one years."
Orion nodded weakly.
"I became both jailer..."
"...and prison."
Fin remembered the black veins.
The exhaustion.
The strange sadness in Orion's eyes.
It had never been illness.
It had been sacrifice.
"Why didn't anyone tell us?"
Selene answered.
"Because if the world learned the Shadow King carried the Void inside him..."
She smiled bitterly.
"...they would fear him even more."
"They already called him a monster."
"They never knew..."
Her voice cracked.
"...he became one to save them."
A quiet cough interrupted them.
Headmaster Caelum.
He leaned heavily upon his spear.
His face had grown even paler.
Golden light leaked from the wound where his left arm had once been.
Fin hurried toward him.
"Headmaster."
"I'm alright."
He smiled.
The lie was painfully obvious.
She frowned.
"You always say that."
"Old habits."
His smile softened.
"I'll have to break them."
The Crownblade suddenly pulsed.
A beam of silver light shot toward the Aether Heart.
Instead of striking it...
The light split into seven smaller streams.
Each stream pointed in a different direction around the sanctuary.
The beams stopped before seven enormous stone doors hidden within the circular walls.
Each door bore the crest of one of the Seven Queens.
Fire.
Water.
Earth.
Wind.
Lightning.
Ice.
Stars.
Zanne slowly stood.
"I don't remember seeing those before."
"You couldn't."
Elara answered.
"They reveal themselves only to the Starborn."
The Queen looked toward Fin.
"The Heart is calling its guardians."
Fin approached the nearest door.
The crest engraved upon it matched the symbol glowing faintly upon the Crownblade.
The Star Crest.
As her fingertips brushed the ancient stone...
The door hummed.
Not opening.
Waiting.
Waiting for something.
Or someone.
A whisper echoed through the sanctuary.
Not from Elara.
Not from Noctis.
From the door itself.
"The seven must become one."
The words lingered in the air.
Priston looked around.
"...Anybody else hear mysterious voices?"
"I did."
Fin answered.
"I really wish mysterious places would start explaining themselves."
Zanne stepped closer to the glowing beams.
His mind was already racing.
"The seven doors..."
"The Seven Queens."
"The Heart."
His eyes widened behind his cracked glasses.
"No..."
Fin turned toward him.
"What?"
"If every Queen left behind something..."
He looked toward the sealed doors.
"...then these aren't tombs."
"They're trials."
The sanctuary became still.
Elara smiled.
For the first time since appearing...
It was a smile filled with hope.
"You've always been observant, Zanne."
The young scholar blinked.
"You... know my name?"
"I know all of your names."
She looked at each of them.
"Because the Heart has been watching."
Her gaze rested on Fin.
"It chose companions."
Not soldiers.
Not servants.
Companions.
Fin looked around at the people standing beside her.
Priston, whose reckless courage had saved her more than once.
Zanne, whose quiet intelligence always found answers others overlooked.
Selene, carrying generations of guilt she never deserved.
Even Orion and Caelum, who had sacrificed everything for a future they might never see.
Maybe...
She realized...
She had never been chosen to save the world alone.
A faint smile touched her lips.
And somewhere in the shadows...
Noctis watched the group standing together.
For just a heartbeat...
The memory of a lonely boy accepting a flower flickered across his face.
Then it vanished.
His expression hardened once more.
Because deep beneath the sanctuary...
The ancient roar sounded again.
This time...
Much closer.
The stone beneath the Seven Doors cracked.
Something enormous struck the foundation from below.
Once.
Twice.
Then a massive claw—black as obsidian, larger than an entire carriage—burst through the floor between the doors, scattering crystal and stone in every direction.
The sanctuary shook violently.
A single eye slowly opened within the darkness.
It wasn't golden like Noctis's.
It burned crimson.
Filled with hunger.
Noctis's calm expression finally broke.
His voice, usually composed and unwavering, carried unmistakable alarm.
"...Impossible."
He took an involuntary step backward.
"It found the Heart."
And for the first time...
Even the Hollow King looked afraid
