Chapter 2 :The Girl Beneath the Spotlight

985 Words
The corridor erupted into chaos. Students rushed toward the faculty wing, their footsteps echoing across the polished floor. “What happened?” “Someone broke into Professor Hale’s office!” “I heard the alarm didn’t even go off!” Kai remained rooted outside the piano room. His eyes searched the empty space where the girl had been only seconds ago. Gone. As though she had never been there. “…Kai!” Noah grabbed his shoulder. “What are you doing? Come on!” Kai blinked and followed him into the crowd. The usually peaceful Melody Building had transformed into a whirlwind of whispers and confusion. Teachers hurried past with tense expressions. Security staff blocked off the end of the hallway with bright yellow tape. Professor Adrian Hale stood outside his office, speaking quietly with the headmaster. Despite his composed expression, something in his eyes suggested this wasn’t an ordinary break-in. Kai noticed one detail. The office door wasn’t damaged. There were no broken locks. No shattered windows. Whoever entered… …had been let inside. Or had a key. A strange feeling settled in his chest. This wasn’t random. Someone had come looking for something. “What was stolen?” A student asked. Professor Hale answered calmly. “Nothing… as far as I can tell.” The crowd exchanged puzzled glances. Nothing? Then why break in? Kai’s gaze drifted toward the open office. A shelf of old music scores. Framed photographs. Books stacked neatly. Everything looked untouched. Everything… Except for one empty hook on the wall. It was small. Almost unnoticeable. As if something had once hung there. Professor Hale quietly noticed Kai looking. For a brief second… Their eyes met. Then Hale looked away. Almost deliberately. “Everyone,” the headmaster announced, “return to your classrooms. Classes will continue as scheduled.” Reluctantly, the students dispersed. But the whispers didn’t stop. “They’re hiding something.” “I heard an old trophy disappeared.” “No… it was a manuscript.” “My cousin said someone broke in last year too.” Rumors spread faster than truth. — Class 3-A. The room buzzed with excitement. Kai chose the seat beside the window. Outside, autumn leaves drifted gently across the courtyard. Noah dropped into the chair beside him. “You picked the quietest seat in class.” “I like quiet.” “Well…” Noah grinned. “You joined the wrong school.” The classroom door slid open. Conversation stopped instantly. A young woman entered carrying a stack of folders. She couldn’t have been much older than twenty-eight. “I’m Ms. Emilia Brooks.” She smiled warmly. “Welcome to Class 3-A.” She began taking attendance. One by one, students answered. Then— “Aria Bennett.” “Present.” Kai looked up. His breath caught. The girl from the piano room stood near the back of the class. The afternoon sunlight spilling through the windows framed her like a painting. She offered the teacher a polite smile before sitting down. Noah leaned closer. “Told you.” Kai frowned. “Told me what?” “That’s Aria Bennett.” “The piano girl?” “The piano legend.” Kai looked back at her. She wasn’t surrounded by admirers. She wasn’t acting like a celebrity. Instead, she quietly helped another student pick up a notebook that had fallen to the floor. Simple. Kind. Ordinary. And somehow… That made her even more extraordinary. — After introductions, Ms. Brooks clapped her hands. “We have a tradition at St. Aurora.” Several students smiled knowingly. “Every new transfer introduces themselves… with music.” Kai’s stomach tightened. “No way,” Noah whispered. “I forgot today was introduction day.” Ms. Brooks looked directly at Kai. “Mr. Carter.” The room fell silent. “Would you like to perform first?” Every eye turned toward him. Kai slowly stood. His hands curled into fists. Images flashed through his mind. A hospital corridor. A broken guitar lying on wet pavement. A voice calling his name. Then… Silence. “I’m sorry.” His voice barely carried across the room. “I don’t play anymore.” The classroom became uncomfortably quiet. One student laughed softly. Another whispered, “Why come to a music academy if you don’t play?” Kai sat down without another word. Noah looked as though he wanted to defend him. But before he could speak— A chair scraped against the floor. Aria stood. “I’ll perform instead.” Ms. Brooks smiled. “As expected.” Aria walked to the classroom piano. She placed both hands above the keys. Closed her eyes. And began to play. Unlike the melody Kai had heard earlier… This one was bright. Hopeful. Filled with sunlight. The classroom seemed to breathe with every note. Students unconsciously smiled. Even those who had mocked Kai moments earlier fell silent. Kai watched her fingers dance across the keyboard. He couldn’t understand why. But every note seemed to reach a place inside him he thought had died two years ago. The final chord lingered in the air. Thunderous applause filled the room. Aria bowed shyly. As she returned to her seat… She stopped beside Kai. Without looking directly at him, she placed a folded sheet of paper on his desk. Then she walked away. Kai stared at it. “What is it?” Noah whispered. Slowly… Kai unfolded the paper. Only one sentence was written in elegant handwriting. “Music waits for everyone… no matter how long they take to come home.” Kai read the words twice. Then three times. For the first time in years… His heart wanted to believe them. But before he could fold the note away— His phone vibrated. An unknown number. One new message. Leave St. Aurora while you still can. Kai’s expression froze. He looked around the classroom. Someone… Was watching him.
