“Okay—” She pulled the letter from beneath the table and slid it across to me. I didn’t look at how it was addressed or at the return address. I simply pulled it from the envelope. The letter was written on school notebook paper and two one-dollar bills were paper clipped to the letter. It was carefully written with pencil in the old-fashioned Palmer method. I set the dollars on the table and began to read.
