On the way home from Arkansas, Alissa and I considered all the possible ways that we might go about confronting Mr. Clayburn and what possible consequences each approach might have.
Since Clayburn’s actions could be criminal, we decided that we would hire an attorney who might negotiate a settlement for us without having to make a public exposure or take matters to court. On a hot, muggy August day in 1963, I came home from the studio broadcast to find three women sitting with Alissa in our living room sipping sweet tea over ice.
When I initially came into the kitchen through the garage door, I heard Alissa call out, “Oh good, Ronnie, you’re home. We’re in the living room.”
